A large crowd gathered in Missouri Southern State University’s Corley Auditorium on Monday afternoon to pay tribute to Derek Moore, the MSSU assistant football coach whose life was cut short in a shooting incident outside a Joplin movie theater late last week.
Following an introduction by Missouri Southern Athletic Director Jared Bruggeman, MSSU head football coach Daryl Daye recalled Coach Moore as “a fun guy -- always smiling, always full of life.”
“He was a solid person,” Daye said. “He loved Missouri Southern. “If he were here today, he would want me to say never take life for granted. Use your opportunities to get better, to be better, to live better. He would want me to tell you to take tragedy and turn it into victory.” Coach Daye recalled the love that Moore showed to his young son, Elijah.

MSSU Interim President Alan Marble said Coach Moore was attracted to the spirit and character of Missouri Southern.
“He felt the joy of being a part of something bigger than any one individual,” Dr. Marble said. “Now, we have to be ‘MOSO strong’ for each other, as we honor Derek.”
University officials said a College Fund for Elijah Moore will kick off at the home football game with Lindenwood-Belleville on Saturday, Nov. 9.
