The Board of Governors of Missouri Southern State University today approved a recommendation from the Budget Audit committee to proceed with plans for construction of a new residence hall complex.
To be located north of Newman Road and east of International Boulevard, the three-story complex will feature 51 student apartments throughout six buildings, the vast majority of which will be four bedrooms. Each bedroom will have its own bathroom, and students will share a common living area and full kitchen. Each apartment will also have its own washer and dryer.
The exterior of the complex will include an open courtyard and common areas, a pedestrian-friendly design and parking on the back side.
The estimated cost for the project is $14 million.
“We want to be able to open the residence halls for students for the fall semester of 2015,” said Robert Harrington, director of Missouri Southern’s physical plant. “In order to do that, we’re looking to put this out to bid in January or February and start construction right away.”
In addition, plans call for construction of a 12,720-square-foot FEMA shelter next to the residence halls. The shelter, which will hold 2,000 people in the event of a storm, has an estimated cost of $2,064,416. FEMA will cover 75 percent of the eligible costs, said Harrington.

The architect for the project is Bates & Associates from Springfield, with Joplin’s R.E. Smith Construction serving as construction manager and contractor.
