Parents as Teachers to offer free developmental screenings

(From Joplin Schools)

Beginning Nov. 6, Parents As Teachers will offer free developmental screenings for children age three months to kindergarten every Wednesday at Pediatric Associates of Southwest Missouri. Parents can call417-625-5365 to schedule an appointment.

A developmental screening by a trained professional helps to determine if your child's development is on track. It provides a snapshot of the strengths and weaknesses of each child and aids in early detection of problems. Most often the results will show that your child is doing well. If there is a problem, specialized attention or intervention at an early age increases the likelihood that these skills and behaviors will improve.

The American Academy of Pediatrics supports early detection of problems in all areas of health and development and recommends that all infants and young children be screened for developmental delays. This can be a team effort among parents, schools, and physicians.
