Dedication ceremony set for Corley Dental Hygiene Clinic at MSSU

(From Southern News Service)

A dedication ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, for the W. Robert Corley Dental Hygiene Clinic at Missouri Southern State University.

The dedication honors a significant gift from Corley to the university’s capital improvement fund.

“There is a constant need to improve facilities on campus in order to provide the best possible environment for our students,” said JoAnn Graffam, executive director of the Missouri Southern Foundation. “Mr. Corley’s gift will help us meet these needs and we’re very grateful to him.”

Corley, who grew up in Columbus, Kan., graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in business administration. He moved to Joplin and in 1951 opened the Duds Shop and later the Attic and Accents on South Main Street.

He is a patron of the arts and has given to many charities over the years. He later became involved with the International Piano Competition on campus.

Corley has donated to KXMS, Missouri Southern’s radio station, and the International Mission endowment. In 2008, he pledged a significant planned gift that will fund scholarships at the university in perpetuity.

“I didn’t graduate from Missouri Southern, but I’ve become so involved with the university that sometimes I feel like I did,” said Corley. “Education is important and Missouri Southern is important to the region, so I want to do my part to support it.”

The Dental Hygiene Clinic is located in the Health Sciences Building. The clinic not only provides the initial learning environment for dental hygiene care, but real-world experiences by providing preventative oral health care services to patients. Students are supervised by dental hygiene and dental faculty at all times. The clinic offers cleanings, X-rays and other preventative services.

The dedication ceremony will include a welcome from Graffam and remarks by Dr. Alan Marble, Missouri Southern’s interim president, and Dr. Tia Strait, dean of the School of Health Sciences.
