This year the City of Joplin will begin the Residential Leaf Pick Up Program two weeks earlier, in hopes of beating the colder, wet weather that Mother Nature and Old Man Winter bring us in December. The program will begin on Monday, November 17, weather permitting, instead of the traditional first Monday after Thanksgiving.

For residents that wish to dispose of leaves now, bring them to the Joplin Compost Facility next to the Turkey Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant at 6457 Eddy Lane, which is west of the intersection of Eddy and North Peace Church Avenue. No brush, tree limbs, bags, or trash, please.

MSSU Board of Governors updated on proposed sexual assault legislation

(From Southern News Service)

During a meeting held Friday, Oct. 17, the Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors heard updates on proposed legislation dealing with sexual assault on college and university campuses as well as a student-supported effort to create a smoke-free campus.

Darren Fullerton, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management, updated the board on proposed legislation aimed at combating sexual violence.

On Oct. 8, Missouri Southern was one of nearly 50 colleges and universities that sent representatives to visit with U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill during her statewide tour. Attending the meeting were Dr. Alan Marble, president; Darren Fullerton; Dr. Ron Mitchell, dean of students; Debbie Dutch Kelley, director of human resources; Faustina Abrahams, clinical counselor; Rachel Burleson, assistant director of athletics/compliance officer; and Ken Kennedy, chief of the University Police Department.

MSSU drumline to perform at World Series Tuesday, Wednesday

(From Southern News Service)

From a performance on the national stage during next week’s World Series to an upcoming halftime show featuring Dontae Winslow – a trumpet player in Justin Timberlake’s band – music students at Missouri Southern are hitting a high note.

The drumline at Missouri Southern will perform during the first two nights of the World Series, as the Kansas City Royals take on the San Francisco Giants.

The 17 members of the Royal Thunder – which includes current students and alumni – will entertain audiences during tailgate and pre-game activities, as well as during the game itself.

During the Royals’ 2011 season, the group served as the team’s official drumline throughout the regular season and during the All-Star Game. Last month, they were invited to perform at Kauffman Stadium for the playoff game versus the Oakland A’s – the team’s first postseason game in nearly 30 years.

“Playing at the Wild Card game was an incredible experience,” said Brian Fronzaglia, interim head of the Music Department and director of athletic bands. “We were asked to play during the American League Championship Series, but that didn’t pan out because of fall break.

“The cool thing about this is we were the premiere drumline for the team in 2011, we were the first drumline to play at an All-Star Game and we’ll be the first to play at the World Series. Our students have an opportunity that no other university or program in the world can claim.”

While the drumline will perform during the first two games, Fronzaglia said they have been put on retainer for the entire seven-game series.

Trumpet player Dontae Winslow – who is currently touring with Justin Timberlake’s band for the “20/20 Experience World Tour” – will come to Missouri Southern for a music clinic and to perform with the marching band during the football game versus Pittsburg State University on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The band will perform a medley of Timberlake’s hits, including “Suit & Tie,” “Let the Groove Get In” and “TKO.”

Winslow will offer a clinic for Missouri Southern and area high-school musicians on Friday, Oct. 31, and will rehearse with the marching band.

The Miners Bowl game versus PSU will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

“He’s a very accomplished jazz musician and a phenomenal trumpet player,” said Fronzaglia. “He’s about as well rounded as you can get as a performer. During the clinic, he’ll talk about what it’s like to maintain an active performance schedule while touring with a major artist, how as a musician he’s able to maintain his personal level of performance and how that relates to students as they make the journey into their own professional careers.”

Joplin Police to hold crime free business seminar

(From the Joplin Police Department)
The Joplin Police Department will hold a Crime Free Business seminar on Tuesday, November 11th, 2014 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

The seminar will be held in the 5th floorconference room of Joplin City Hall at 602 S. Main St, Joplin, MO. Topics discussed during the seminar are what to do in the event of a robbery, hostile customer, or shoplifter.

During the seminar officers will also speak about Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, a crime prevention strategy that utilizes the environment in and around a business to make it more attractive for customers and less of a target for potential criminals.

The Crime Free Business program is a state-of-the-art crime prevention program designed to reduce crime and the threat of crime in and around businesses. The Crime Free program was successfully developed at the Mesa Arizona Police Department in 1992.

The program consists of two phases that must be completed under the supervision of the Joplin Police Department’s Crime Free Business Officers. The overall goals of the program are to:

-Establish better communication with business owners and managers.
- Establish a cohesive working relationship with businesses.
- Instruct and assist management with training of employees on topics like
robbery prevention, anger de-escalation, and observation.
- Identify aspects of a business of which a criminal could take advantage.
- Aid management in identifying and documenting problems.
- Stress the importance of good security and crime prevention measures.
-Reduce calls for service for the police department.
-Improve the layout and functions of the business to improve overall quality of life for both employees and customers.

Clean air meeting scheduled at Missouri Southern

(From the Sierra Club)
On Tuesday, residents from southwestern Missouri will speak out at a meeting of the Missouri Comprehensive State Energy Plan steering committee at Missouri Southern State University’s Billingsly Student Center in Joplin. The meeting begins at 1pm.  Earlier this month, Governor Nixon started convening forums and taking comments on the state’s first comprehensive energy planning process in decades.
Missouri is heavily dependent on coal-fired power plants, which are the largest polluters in the state. Missouri also currently lags behind neighboring states like Illinois, Iowa and Kansas when it comes to clean energy investment, shutting the door on job creation in the state.
Residents of southwestern Missouri have been impacted for decades by Missouri’s dependence on coal. In Springfield, City Utilities has raised rates in the past year to prop up outdated coal-fired power plants and to build a risky landfill for its coal ash waste that puts drinking water at risk.
Doctors, residents, clean energy business leaders and water experts will call on Governor Nixon to ensure he uses the state energy planning process to address the state’s costly pollution from coal plants and the threat of climate change by building a clean energy economy.
