The body found in a car in the parking lot at a Wendy's in Nixa has been identified as Greg Connelly, 34, Joplin.
The body was identified from dental records, according to the Nixa Police.
From KSPR's report:
Nixa Police detectives do not suspect foul play. Connelly's cause of death is unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
The decomposed body was in a car in the parking lot of a Wendy's restaurant. An employee found it early in the morning. Police think the car had been there for a few days.

Sewer work to cause closures at 20th and Connecticut

From Tuesday, July 5 through Sunday, July 10 there will be significant closures at the intersection of 20th Street and Connecticut Avenue. Connecticut Avenue north of 20th Street will be completely closed for much of this time. 20th Street will be reduced to one or two lanes with the possibility of flaggers to direct traffic when necessary. Detours will be available, but motorists are encouraged to use extreme caution and to avoid the intersection when possible.
The work adjusts sewer manholes out of the high traffic areas of this intersection and constructs a new sanitary sewer lines in the area.

MSSU student attending Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program
“I have no other view than to promote the public good, and am unambitious of honors not founded in the approbation of my country.” – George Washington
This ideal shared by the first President of the United States is at the heart of the Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows – a five-and-a-half-week program for juniors that focuses on academic and leadership development.
Ashley Burns, a biology major at Missouri Southern, is one of 16 college students from around the country selected to participate this year. Two-hundred applications were received and 35 students were interviewed before the final selections were made.
“I visited Mount Vernon (George Washington’s estate) a few years ago with my family,” said Burns. “I found out about the Leadership Fellows program on Instagram and knew I had to apply.”
Participants stayed for a week in quarters at Mount Vernon and are now staying in Alexandria, Va., just a short distance away from the nation’s capital. So far, the students have visited the White House and Supreme Court, and visited with figures such as Curt Viebranz, president and CEO of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and Lieutenant General Vincent R. Stewart, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
They are also attending regular leadership development sessions as well as working on individual capstone projects.
“We’re going through a leadership curriculum that develops our individual leadership skills through learning about the life of George Washington,” Burns said. ““We’re learning about his leadership traits and what made him unique,” she said. “He was humble and surrounded himself with people of higher education. We’re also learning a lot about the presidential precedents that he set. In class, we do activities that hone in on our own skills and strengths.
“The other component is that each of us has brought a different idea or project to develop and bring back to our own communities. I brought the idea to find ways to further engage youth and diversity into the National Parks Service.”
The passion the Granby resident brings to the parks service is one that she has had since becoming a volunteer at the George Washington Carver National Monument at the age of 9. In 2014, she received the Hartzog Outstanding Individual Youth Volunteer award, which was presented by the national director of the parks service in Washington, D.C.
Today, she is employed as a park guide and youth ambassador at the Carver monument near Diamond. At Southern, she serves as a Lion Ambassador and is a member of the Honors Program.
“We’re very proud of Ashley and all that she has accomplished,” said Dr. Brad Hodson, Missouri Southern’s executive vice president. “Her acceptance into the prestigious Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program speaks to her character, her desire to make a difference in her community and her commitment to public service.”

National Night Out set for August 2 in Cunningham Park

On Tuesday, August 2, neighborhoods throughout Joplin are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 33rd Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime prevention event.
On Tuesday, August 2, neighborhoods throughout Joplin are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 33rd Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime prevention event.
National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Joplin Police Department, and will involve over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.
In all, over 37.8 million people are expected to participate in America’s Night Out Against Crime.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) strengthen community spirit and policecommunity partnerships. More details can be found at www.natw.org.
Joplin’s National Night Out 2016 event will be held at Cunningham Park starting at 5:30 pm. Free food and drinks will be served during the event. This will be a fun-filled family friendly night with several events for children of all ages. One of the main attractions will be a free swim at the Cunningham Aquatic Center starting at 6:45 pm. Last year more than 800 Joplin area residents came out and enjoyed the National Night Out and another large turnout is expected this year.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Dodge 3500 driven by Raliegh D. Ritter, 37, Seneca, pulled into the path of a 2013 Honda Accord driven by Janice K. Garcia, 58, Joplin.
Garcia and a passenger, Arnello M. Garcia, 67, Joplin, were treated at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, for moderate and minor injuries, respectively.

Ribbon cutting ceremony set to recognize start of curbside recycling in Joplin

The City of Joplin invites all residents to join in a Ribbon Cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6 to recognize the start of residential curbside recycling in Joplin. The event will be held at the home of Christina Williams and Samuel Wimsett, 2602 South Kingsdale Avenue.
The family currently recycles and take their items to the Joplin Recycling Center on a regular basis. They were one of the first households to sign up for curbside recycling. Williams also serves on the Solid Waste Advisory Commission.
City officials will join the Williams family, along with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and representatives from Republic Services, Inc., the contractor providing this service.
“We are thrilled to have this service coming to Joplin,” said Christina Williams. “We know of so many other cities offering this convenience to their residents and are pleased that Joplin has joined this group.”
“Big Al”, the mascot for Joplin Recycling Center will also be attending this event, and refreshments will be available.
Curbside recycling will begin on June 1 for all residents who have signed up for this service. It is available to all Joplin residents living in single-family or duplex homes at a fee of $4.75 per month in addition to the regular trash rate of $11.73, for a total of $16.48.
Each resident who chooses to participate will receive a 96-gallon container with a light blue lid for their recyclables. Containers will be picked up one time per week on your regular trash day. Please remember that even though services are on the same day, a different truck at a different time will pick up recyclables.

Wentworth woman injured after slamming into fence
A Wentworth woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 7:55 a.m. today on Cherry Road, three miles east of Wentworth.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1988 Chevrolet pickup driven by Abigail B. Sundin, 20, Wentworth, drove off the left edge of the roadway, struck a fence and overturned.
Sundin was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Lamar man injured in accident near Carl Junction
A Lamar man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 8:20 a.m. today on Route 2, one mile west of Carl Junction.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Sterling L9500 concrete mixer truck driven by Daniel L. Riley 39, Lamar, partially ran off the roadway, overcorrected and overturned on the roadway, striking a mailbox.
Riley was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Woman, one-year-old injured in accident near Neosho
Two people were injured in a one-vehicle accident 11:55 a.m. today on Kodiak Road, one mile south of Neosho.
According to the Highway Patrol report, Kellie Winchester, 32, Neosho, driving a 1999 Chrysler 300, lost control of the vehicle and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel off the main portion of the roadway and overturn. Winchester was ejected.
Winchester was treated for moderate injuries, and a passenger, Breanna N. Garrison, 1, for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Two men were injured in a two-vehicle crash 12 noon today on Highway 160, one mile east of Golden City.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Orville D. Alberty, 75, Jasper, failed to yield and while attempting to make a left turn into a private driveway struck a 1995 GEO metro driven by Lawrence P. Collins, 65, Golden City.
Alberty was treated for serious injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, while Collins was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities. Between 2012 and 2014, 668 people were killed and 2,448 were seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver in Missouri.
That’s why Joplin Police Department, along with the Southwest Missouri DWI Task Force, will conduct extra enforcement this upcoming weekend.
Consequences of impaired driving include jail time, loss of driver licenses, and being required to have an ignition interlock installed. Insurance rates go up. Other financial hits include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job or job prospects. When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators can also face tremendous personal embarrassment and humiliation.
The Joplin Police Department wants all drivers to realize that driving impaired is simply not worth all the consequences.

Arkansas police arrest Joplin woman for kidnapping
From the Democrat and Gazette:
Paul Ray Halligan told police he was kidnapped and beaten earlier this month in Bentonville, according to police records. He said Hull picked him up in Coffeyville, Kan. They drove to the Value Place Inn in Bentonville and picked up Tracy Ova, and the trio drove to a Confederate Regulators event in Manchester, Ky.
When they returned June 5 to the motel in Bentonville, Halligan told police the women left him in the room with Rick Shetters, Eric Edinger and Chris Castleman, according to the affidavit.
The men accused Halligan of stealing money and drugs from someone in Kentucky, and Castleman head-butted and choked him, according to the affidavit.

Hull is free on $15,000 bond.

A Noel woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on Route DD, four miles north of Noel.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Buick Enclave driven by Perla K. Arteaga, 41, Noel, was stopped for traffic ahead and was struck in the rear by a 2000 Dodge Dakota driven by James A. Powers, 28, Noel.
Arteaga was treated for minor injuries at Integris Grove Hospital, Grove, Oklahoma.

MSSU Board of Governors extends Alan Marble's contract
During a job-performance review held in closed session earlier this month, the Board of Governors at Missouri Southern State University voted to extend the contract for MSSU President Dr. Alan Marble through June 2019.
“We are very pleased to have Alan as the president of Missouri Southern,” said Glenn M. McCumber, who was recently named as chair of the Board of Governors. “He, along with the faculty and staff, have done a tremendous job in leading the university. There are a lot of opportunities ahead of us, and he is definitely the man for the job.”
Marble was named Missouri Southern’s fifth president in June 2013, after having served for nearly a year as the university’s interim president. Among the advancements made during his tenure are the $14 million residence hall complex, the North End Zone Facility, a new baseball stadium and the current Reynolds Hall renovation project.
The university has also created an exclusive partnership with Kansas City University to guarantee up to 25 students admission to KCU’s new Joplin medical school at the same time as their acceptance to Missouri Southern. Plans are also underway to bring a dental school to campus.
“I’m grateful for the confidence on the part of the Board of Governors to receive an extended contract as president of this university,” said Marble. “It is my honor to continue to serve our outstanding students, faculty and staff and to be part of advancing the role that Missouri Southern plays in the region.”
Carthage police looking for stolen gun
On 05/23/2016 a Ruger LCP .380 semi-auto handgun with a black holster was stolen in Carthage.
The color of the gun is Sage Ceracote on the slide and FDE (Field Dark Earth) on the frame. The pictures are example pictures of what the items will look like.

Joplin police seeking information on burglary suspect
The Joplin Police Department is needing your help in identifying a burglary suspect.
On 06/27/2016 the Joplin Police Department received a report of a burglary at a residence on the east side of Joplin.
The suspect and his vehicle were captured on surveillance video during the commission of the crime.

Neosho man injured in two-vehicle accident
A Neosho man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 1:43 a.m. today on southbound I-49, three miles south of Joplin.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2004 Dodge Neon, driven by Allenson Damian, 49, Joplin, at a slow rate of speed in the passing lane, swerved into the path of a 2012 Freightliner driven by Rocky L. Rife, 42, Wheatland.
A passenger in the Damian vehicle, Peter Samuel, 40, Neosho, was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

We offer several of our core programs — the workshops and classes that have become trademarks of Thomas Jefferson's summer program — as well as many exploratory courses. Included are our Lower School Performing Arts Academy, sports academies, robotics academy, our PSAT/SAT/ACT preparation courses, foreign language camps, and a Middle School study skills course. Nancy Hughes devotion: Secret sin
“You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.” Psalm 90:8 (NIV)
Devotion:
As I listened to a dear friend confess something from her past during Bible study, I quietly kept my eyes focused on my feet but my heart was pounding. I tried and failed to ignore the truth: I knew how she felt. I had something hidden, too.
We were challenged by our Bible study leader the week before to ask the Lord to show us hidden sin in our lives that we needed to offer up to Him for forgiveness.
Sandy shared that while she was at work, she had accidentally bumped into a box on the floor and heard glass breaking. She peeked inside and saw an expensive chandelier with one of its globes in pieces. She was devastated because she knew how expensive it must have been and she did not have the money to replace it.
In a moment of panic, she walked away without saying a word. It had been almost two months and she had tried to forget the incident. She had failed.
“I want you all to pray for me,” she told us. “I have to make this right. I really feel the Lord telling me that, no matter the outcome, I have sinned by not confessing to Him and to my boss what had happened.”
Sandy had no idea that I, too, had accepted our study leader’s challenge and now wrestled with a secret sin that had happened – not months ago – but years ago.
I was a high school freshman and in a speech class. A really good friend of mine was debating a topic with one of the boys in the class. I honestly do not remember the topic but I do remember that more than anything I wanted her to win.
They each gave excellent arguments and after they finished, the class voted on the winner. Our teacher asked me to count the votes.
I began to count and I could see that it was going to be close. As I opened the last 4 ballets, I realized that my friend had lost. And that’s what I should have told the teacher when she asked me who won. But I didn’t.
In a split second I made the decision to lie. “Megan won” I told her. She looked straight into my eyes and asked “Are you sure?” and I repeated the lie. “Yes, I’m sure” I told her as I gathered up the ballots and threw them in the trash.
And I hid that lie – I thought – from everyone. I even rationalized my decision. Megan had worked a lot harder on her speech than he had. She was better prepared. Even if she didn’t actually win, she should have.
For years I thought I had kept that lie hidden. That is, until the Lord gently but firmly reminded me through Sandy and her transparent heart.
Today’s Key Scripture in Psalm 90:8 addresses what Moses referred to as “secret sins.” We try to hide them away as if we can keep God from finding out. Wrong.
There are no secret sins with God. He knows and sees everything. Scripture says that while we may think our secret sins are “hidden” in darkness, the light of God’s presence shows them crystal clear.
How about you? Do you have a secret sin stored away, hoping that no one will ever find out?
Please please know that no matter what it is, there is healing and peace when you take it before the Lord. His extreme love for you and His mercy, grace and forgiveness cover ALL sin. Did you get that? All. There’s nothing that you have done that He cannot or will not forgive.
Two weeks after Sandy’s confession in our group, she shared that she had gone to her boss, told her what had happened and offered to pay for the broken globe. Sandy also asked for forgiveness. The relief that she felt was indescribable, she said, as her boss thanked her for telling the truth and forgave her.
Her testimony gave me courage to confess my secret sin and ask for forgiveness, too. It was embarrassing and humiliating but I was met with love and forgiveness.
And the Lord? His forgiveness was instant and His grace unbelievable. I made a decision, too: no more secret sin for me.
My Prayer for Today:
Father, as much as it may hurt, please show me my secret sins so I can be cleansed and receive mercy and forgiveness from you. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Reflection:
Can you think of a situation when you sinned but tried to keep it secret so no one would know? Did you consider that God knew what you did?
Application:
Meditate on today’s Key Scripture and ask the Lord to show you any sin that you have hidden in your heart.
Journal what He has shown you in His Word. Spend time in prayer and then make every effort to confess to the person involved, ask for forgiveness, and lay it all down at the feet of Jesus.

Captain Juan Villanueva, commanding officer of Troop D, announces the results of a DWI sobriety checkpoint conducted in Newton County on June 24, 2016. The enforcement location was selected based on the high number of drinking and impairment-related crashes, in addition to other traffic violations that contribute to unsafe driving behavior.
The DWI checkpoint was conducted at the intersection of Missouri Highway 43 and Dutch Elm Road. During the operation, officers stopped 1003 vehicles. The following is a list of enforcement contacts made during the operation:

Springfield teen drowns in North River
A Springfield teen drowned 5:38 p.m. Saturday in the North River while attempting to help another swimmer.
According to the Highway Patrol report, Chloe E. Butcher, 13, Springfield, became lodged underneath the water and never resurfaced. Trooper J. R. Roberts and Ozark County first responders removed her from the water and she was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m. by Dr. Henegar.

Neosho woman injured in one-vehicle accident
A Neosho woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 8:45 a.m. Sunday on Gateway Drive, six miles north of Neosho.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Honda Civic driven by Amanda M. Yunek, 24, Neosho, traveled off the right side of the road, overcorrected and overturned.
Yunek was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Driver arrested for DWI, airlifted to Freeman following scooter accident
A Goodman man was charged with driving while intoxicated following a one-vehicle accident 7:01 p.m. Saturday on East Garner Street in Goodman.
According to the Highway Patrol report, Dallas A. Gillett, 48, Goodman, driving a 2003 Qinqui scooter, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck an embankment.
Gillett was airlifted to Freeman Mercy Hospital, Joplin, to be treated for moderate injuries.
He was also cited for driving while revoked and careless and imprudent driving.

Joplin woman killed; motorcyclist cited for DWI, manslaughter
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2012 Harley Davidson driven by Bryan W. McCutcheon, 45, Joplin, ran off the roadway and overturned, ejecting McCutcheon and his passenger, Chelsey R. McCutcheon, 32, Joplin.
Chelsey McCutcheon was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:49 a.m. by Newton County Coroner Brian Artherton.
Bryan McCutcheon was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
In addition to DWI and manslaughter, McCutcheon was cited for careless and imprudent driving.
The fatality was the 55th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Three motorcyclists injured in four-vehicle crash near Carthage
Three motorcyclists were injured in a four-vehicle accident 3 p.m. today on Highway 96, six miles east of Carthage.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2004 Toyota Tacoma driven by Andrew C. Yoder, 16, LaRussell, failed to stop for a stopped vehicle, then crossed the center line in front of three motorcyclists coming from the opposite direction, striking a 2001 Harley Davidson driven by Richard L. Wehr, 51, Nixa.
A 1998 Harley Davidson driven by Billy C. Riley, 29, Vinita, Oklahoma, was avoiding the two vehicles and overturned. A 2009 Harley Davidson driven by John B. Hicks, 46, Carterville, struck the Riley motorcycle and overturned.
Wehr, Riley, and Hicks were taken to Mercy Hospital, Joplin, where they were treated for serious, minor, and moderate injuries, respectively.

-Felony possession of a controlled substance (four counts)
-Felony drug paraphernalia
-Possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana
-Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia
-No seat belt
Tramell was also cited for driving while suspended and for not having any insurance.

Closure is due to sewer construction.
Detour routes will be in place. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in these areas and are urged to utilize alternate routes during this period.

Neosho woman injured in accident near Spring City
A Neosho woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 8:08 p.m. Thursday on Highway 86, one mile south of Spring City.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Toyota Tundra driven by Desirae M. Griffith, 20, Neosho, ran off the roadway and overturned.
Griffith was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Carthage teen, 5-year-old injured after tire blowout
Two Carthage residents were injured in a one-vehicle accident 1:40 p.m. today on I-49, one mile east of Anderson.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Sadie J. Smith, 19, Carthage, had a tire blow out, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a guard rail, returned to the roadway and overturned.
Smith, who suffered moderate injuries, and a passenger, Mack J. Smith, 5, who suffered minor injuries, were treated at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Crowder, Missouri State sign educational partnership
Crowder College and Missouri State University are working together as educational partners to provide opportunities for students to pursue bachelor degrees while remaining on a Crowder campus.
Crowder students may pursue their bachelor degrees as follows:
· B.S. in General Business (online)
· B.S. in Nursing (online with a special program for qualified students called “Crowder BSN Scholars”)
· B.S. in Elementary Education with Middle School or Early Childhood endorsements
o Available at Neosho, Cassville & Nevada
· B.A.S. in General Agriculture (Neosho)
The “Crowder BSN Scholars Program” provides Crowder students who qualify to take up to five upper-division MSU classes before they graduate with their Associate of Nursing from Crowder. This opportunity helps the student to complete their degree more quickly.
Crowder College and Missouri State first offered the opportunity for students to pursue their bachelors degrees and remain on the Neosho campus in 2007 with General Agriculture, Business and Elementary Education. Upon the success of these programs Nursing was added as an online option in 2013.
“Partnerships between two schools should have one goal in mind: “what is best for students.” The agreements we signed today met that goal. We want to give our students as many high quality options after graduation as possible. When a student graduates from Crowder College with an Associate Degree, he or she needs to have a variety of options on moving right in to a Bachelor Degree programs. MSU fills that need without causing life changes for students,” state Glenn Coltharp, Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Missouri State has Outreach Coordinator, Larry Nichols, located on the Crowder Neosho campus. He is available to work with students transferring to the university. He may be reached at 417.455.5757.

On Friday, June 24, representatives from Arvest Bank will present a check for $5000 to Joplin Schools to help support the Snackpack program. The presentation will take place at 2 p.m. at Arvest Bank, 3201 McClelland Blvd. The funds were raised during Arvest Bank's recent Million Meals initiative. This initiative works to feed neighbors in need and to raise awareness about food insecurity.
The Snackpack program, started by Joplin Schools Foundation and funded and managed in part by Bright Futures Joplin, serves approximately 350 Joplin Schools' elementary students who are experiencing food insecurity. Every week during the school year, volunteers pack bags with food for students to take home over the weekend, helping to ensure that students come to school on Monday fed and ready to learn.

The City of Joplin offices will be closed on Monday, July 4, for Independence Day. This closing includes the MAPS and the Sunshine Lamp Trolley services. All City services will resume their regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, July 5.
Public Safety services will continue to operate throughout the Independence Day holiday weekend, as these departments run 24/7 throughout the year.
The Council meeting normally scheduled for the first Monday of the month will be held on Tuesday, July 5 due to the Independence Day holiday.
In addition, residential trash service will not be picked up on Independence Day, Monday, July 4. Customers who usually have trash picked up on Mondays will have their trash picked up on Tuesday, July 5. For the remainder of the week, the residential trash collection will move forward one day with Friday’s customers having a Saturday pick-up.
