City of Joplin contacting property owners about duplication of debris cleanup benefits

(From City of Joplin)

The City will soon send letters to all property owners who signed a right-of-entry (ROE) form with the City of Joplin that allowed FEMA’s (Federal Emergency Management Agency) government-funded contractor, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, to clean the loose tornado debris from their property following the May 2011 tornado.

The letters pertain to the duplication of benefits that may or may not have occurred with each individual property owner. Over the last several years for those properties cleaned by the government-funded contractors, the City has been reviewing insurance policies and working with each of the insurance companies (when authorized by the property owner) to determine if a duplication of benefit had occurred.

Joplin trash service moved back one day due to weather

(From the City of Joplin)

Republic Services, the Joplin residential trash provider, was not able to pick up the trash on Monday, February 16th, therefore they will be running a day behind this week. Normally, when one day is missed, Saturday is used to complete the routes, but if two days are missed, Republic Services resumes their regular schedule. The City of Joplin reminds customers that all trash will be picked up, even if it does not fit in the polycart.

City officials stated that safety is a major concern and ask that residents be patient during these challenging weather conditions.

Mary Anne Phillips, Joplin Recycling Coordinator stated, “Pedestrians and motorists are reminded that it is difficult for heavy trash trucks to stop on icy and snow covered roads and alleys. Furthermore, City and State road crews do not plow residential streets or alleys because the snow banks would block cross streets, driveways and parked vehicles.”

The City does apply salt and sand to residential streets after the main roads are cleared. Typically this is enough treatment to start the melting process and with passing traffic, the snow clears itself in time. Cold temperatures can delay this process.

Call the Recycling Coordinator at (417) 624-0820 Ext. 501 when there is a question as to whether trash service will be delayed, or for any recycling, household hazardous waste and trash disposal issues.

Weather spotter class scheduled for February 26

(From the City of Joplin)

The Joplin / Jasper County Office of Emergency Management, along with the National Weather Service, will host a weather spotter class at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 26 at Missouri Southern State University. The class will be held in the Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall on MSSU campus, located at 3950 East Newman Road, Joplin.

The class normally runs about 2 hours and is open to the public, no reservations are required. It will be taught by a NWS Meteorologist from the Springfield NWS office.

To see the complete list of area classes, click on the link at the end of this article.

As the storm season approaches, residents are encouraged to plan ahead for where to seek shelter if a tornado strikes. They should also have an emergency supplies kit packed with bottled water, non-perishable foods, necessary medications, a flashlight, batteries and a first aid kit.

“Another tool that will help community members be prepared for emergencies is an all-hazards NOAA weather alert radio,” adds Stammer. “These programmable radios operate on electricity with battery-backup. They can be programmed to receive information for only the counties and topics of interest to the user. They carry alerts and information on severe weather, missing children, public health emergencies, civil emergencies and more.”

The radios can be purchased at local retailers. For more information on preparing for emergencies, contact the Joplin-Jasper County Office of Emergency Management at 417-624-0820, ext. 1261.

(From City of Joplin)

An historical celebration will be held on February 19, 2015 at the Gryphon Building to commemorate the 100 Year Anniversary of one of Joplin’s finest buildings. One hundred years ago on February 19, 1915 over 5,000 local citizens attended the grand opening ceremony of the Interstate Grocery Store warehouse. The $225,000, multi-story commercial building was proudly on display for the local community to enjoy just as it is today.

This beautifully restored structure remains a model for historic preservation. The commemorative event will begin at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 19 at the Gryphon, 1027 Main Street. Brad Belk, Executive Director of the Joplin Museum Complex and Allen Shirley, Board Member of the Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation will make brief statements.

The public as well as the media are welcome and encouraged to attend as well as tour the building. Please join us in recognizing the rich history of this building, repurposed as a vibrant and thriving commercial center.

For further information, please contact Brad Belk at 417-623-1180.

City of Joplin, CVB to unveil Wayfarer signs

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin and the Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau will host a media event to unveil the City’s new Wayfinder signage system. Officials with the CVB and the City will join representatives of the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, at 423 Range Line Road, near the front of Books-A-Million to uncover the new look for these directional signs.
A Wayfinder system provides directional signage for motorists to locate a specific district within a community. While in a designated district, some Wayfinder information may be more specific to a destination.

The original efforts for Joplin to have a Wayfinding system dates back to 2007 with input from a tourism-related citizen’s committee. With an initial task to identify specific districts the signs could direct motorists to visit, the group named four distinct districts. These include: Downtown Historic; Hotel; Range Line Retail; and Sports. Installation of the current signage was completed in 2009, with the existing signs being manufactured by the City of Joplin.

Due the changes in the Federal Highway Standards, specifically related to new safety features and their reflective appearance, this system is non-compliant. The cost in replacing 37 signs in the Wayfinder system is $53,000.

In addition, a smaller version of the design is being installed to direct motorists along Joplin’s portion of the original Route 66. The tradition blue Historic By-Way signs will be placed in a bracket system similar to the style used in the primary Wayfinder signs. Not only will this enhance the image of Route 66 within the Joplin city limits, it will also provide continuity with the large system. The cost for this portion of the project is $30,000.

Funding for this project is provided through Joplin’s 4% lodging tax. The upgrade brings Joplin’s Wayfinder System into compliance with Federal and MoDOT Highway Standards.
