(From Southern News Service)
The annual World Music & Cuisine Festival will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom at Missouri Southern State University.
International students, faculty and staff will prepare their native dishes, while a variety of musical groups perform. Food portions will be sold for $1 each.
“The World Music & Cuisine Festival has quickly become one of the signature events at Missouri Southern,” said Dr. Chad Stebbins, director of the Institute of International Studies. “Most people like to sample exciting, new foods and hear music that they may be unaccustomed to. It’s a great combination of satisfying your palate and expanding your musical repertoire at the same time.”
The entertainment will be provided by Kufara, an African marimba band, at 5 p.m.; Mariachi Amistad, a Mexican mariachi band, at 5:45 p.m.; Saudi Ardah, a dance by students from Saudi Arabia, at 6:45 p.m.; and the German polka band Mach Schnell Blaskapelle at 7 p.m.
Food selections will include offerings from Festival Mexican Restaurant and Roswitha’s Schnitzelbank, as well as dishes prepared by more than two dozen students and faculty members.
“Our international students and faculty like to bring exposure to their cultures, and one way they can do this is by showcasing some of the wonderful food from their countries,” said Stebbins. “For example, one of our students from South Korea is going to prepare the delicious Bulgogi barbecue, and our contingent from the British Virgin Islands will fix their national dish — fungi and fish.”
Presented by The Joplin Globe and the MSSU International Club, the World Music & Cuisine Festival is a fundraiser for the university’s international students. Emcees will be Volodymyr Dukov, a student from Ukraine, and Inge Logtenberg, from the Netherlands.
Inside Joplin features news and commentary about Joplin, Missouri, and the surrounding area, including Webb City, Carl Junction, Carthage, Sarcoxie, Neosho, Granby, Seneca, Diamond, Lamar, Golden City, Liberal, Anderson, and Pineville, with information about Jasper, Newton, Barton, and McDonald counties.

Regional Media Hall of Fame Awards Dinner planned
(From Southern News Service)
The Regional Media Hall of Fame Awards Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom at Missouri Southern State University.
Presented by the Department of Communication, the Hall of Fame Awards honor media professionals who have made a regional impact throughout their careers. The 2016 recipients are Jim Hamilton and Dave Koester, with the Legacy Award going to the late Larry Young.
Jim Hamilton
Jim Hamilton has been an editorial icon in Buffalo for nearly four decades.
His initiation as a journalist was in 1964 as the Fair Grove FFA reporter, sending handwritten articles to the Springfield newspaper. He enrolled at Missouri State University after high school, and was named editor of the SMS Standard. In 1971, he was married, started U.S. Air Force basic training and also served as editor of the base newspaper.
He began working as a news editor at the Bolivar Herald-Free Press in January 1976.
He later began working for the Buffalo Reflex/Dallas County Republican. He managed the Buffalo Reflex for 20 years and continued as editor/publisher for Community Publishers Inc. in 1999.
In January 2004, he was back where he had started at the Bolivar Herald-Free Press. For the next decade, he served as a regional writer for CPI’s Southwest Missouri newspapers.
He has served as president of the Ozark Press Association, the Ozark Writers League and the Writers Hall of Fame. A collection of columns was published in 1994.
Hamilton retired in May 2015, though he continues to write columns and features as a freelancer.
Dave Koester
David Koester has a prestigious 38-year career in the television broadcasting industry. It began while attending Missouri Southern State College (now MSSU), where he earned his bachelor of arts in English. His first news reporting experience was a staff writer and sports editor for The Chart.
During his junior year, Koester started working on weekends at KODE-TV in Joplin. From 1977-80, he worked as a reporter and weekend anchor, and hosted a program on topical issues.
Koester served as the station’s news director from 1980-82. He then joined KOTV in Tulsa as its chief assignment manager. From 1982-87, he supervised news crews, reporters and photojournalists, and covered breaking news stories.
For the next 28 years, he was the assignment manager for KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City.
Koester is a recipient of an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Heartland Region, for his live news coverage, “McVeigh Moved.” His news team received the prestigious Peabody Award in 1995 for coverage of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
He recently retired and plans to continue his volunteer work and spend more time with family.
Larry Young
Larry Young had a career spanning more than 40 years in broadcasting, starting in radio and ending in television.
He was born in St. Louis and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he majored in radio/television news and graduated in 1967.
While stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Ill., he worked part-time for WDWS AM/FM radio as a weekend staff member. He also served at DaNang Airfield in Vietnam and Bolling Air Force Base in Washington.
His career in television news began at WBOC-TV in Salisbury, Md., where he worked as general assignment reporter, weekend anchor, staff announcer and program director.
In 1984, Young moved to KOAM-TV in Pittsburg, Kan., where he served as news and program director. He was later hired as news director of KODE-TV in Joplin. He left briefly in 1999, then returned to be news director at KSN-TV. He assumed the role of news director of both stations when they were purchased by Nexstar Broadcasting.
He worked until his health prevented him from being there full time, and died in 2008.
The Regional Media Hall of Fame was created in 2006. Honorees receive a crystal trophy and are featured in a display located in the lobby of the broadcast facilities at Missouri Southern.

Webb City teen seeks return of cherished item
(From Shelby Warner, Webb City)
MISSING! IF FOUND PLEASE RETURN.
MISSING! IF FOUND PLEASE RETURN.
A couple weeks ago my car was stolen, it has since then been recoverd BUT there was a small glass wizard glued to my dash that was taken.
This wizard meant the world to me just because it was the only present my mother ever gave to my dad in the whole umpteen years they spent together. It was the only sign of love I ever knew her to show him. My dad had this wizard glued to the dash of his truck until they parted ways for the last time over ten years ago. I kept it as a little reminder of the love my parents once shared years back and glued it to my dash.
This little figurine means everything to me, it makes me want to cry when I think about losing it forever. If anyone has seen a little wizard holding a staff in a blue robe waring a witchy hat on a second hand shelf or put out for a yard sale somewhere, please send me a description or if possible a picture.
I know it's a long shot but it just might give back a stolen piece of my childhood. I'll reward anyone who can help me find my little blue wizard. I know it's crazy but please keep look out. Please help me guys!!
I live in Webb City I'm 17 and I'll do anything to get the word out about this. It might not be a headline in New York Times, but it means everything to me to find what was stolen from my heart. I have posted this on every Joplin give and take group in desperate hope someone will see it and return this piece of my childhood please help me.

Joplin Fire Department recognizes crews for excellent work
(From the Joplin Fire Department)
The Joplin Fire Department would like to recognize two of our crews on their work this past week.
Truck 5B (Captain Jeremy Humphrey, Driver/Engineer Adam Stewart, and Firefighter Zach Foltz responded to a medical emergency with a patient not conscious and not breathing. Upon arrival, our crew initiated CPR and other life saving techniques then assisted the METS ambulance crew with continuing care and treatment. The patient responded to the treatment and the patient had regained a pulse and respirations on arrival at the hospital.
Engine 3A (Captain Trae Goetz, Driver/Engineer Kolby Tucker, Firefighter Scott Redshaw, and Firefighter Amanda Davis) responded to a medical emergency with a patient not conscious and not breathing. Upon arrival, our crew initiated CPR and other life saving techniques, then assisted the METS ambulance crew with continuing care and treatment. The patient responded to the treatment and had regained a pulse and respirations on arrival at the hospital.
In both situations the team response of pre-arrival care from our dispatchers, first response from our crews initiating care, and advanced life saving techniques provided by METS ambulance led to a positive outcome. Thank you for your work to those that were involved.

Changes made to traffic signals on Route 60 in Monett
(From MODOT)
Drivers along U.S. Route 60 in Monett will see changes to the way signals operate in an effort to improve traffic flow through town beginning Monday, March 28, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
Beginning with the traffic signals on Route 60 between Kyler Street and Lowes Lane, MoDOT will re-synchronize signals to keep traffic moving with minimal delays. The re-synchronization will mean the signals will turn green in advance of traffic, allowing drivers to make it all the way through the corridor with minimal or no stopping. Traffic approaching from a side street may experience wait times of up to one minute before getting a green light.
Previously, the signals were operating in “free operation” mode, meaning side street traffic would be detected as soon as it approached the stop bar. If no traffic was detected on Route 60, the side street light would turn green. The new signal coordination will allow for less stop-and-go for drivers traveling on Route 60.
MoDOT traffic engineers will continue to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments to the signal timing as needed.

JPD names Rusty Comer officer of the month
(From the Joplin Police Department)
We would like to recognize our February 2016 Officer of the Month, Officer Rusty Comer.
On February 28, 2016 around 0800 hours, Officer Rusty Comer was on regular patrol in an area around 1800 W. 7th Street, Guitars parking lot. When he arrived he noticed at least ten vehicles that had been broken into overnight. Officer Comer began the investigation by processing the vehicles. He was able to locate two vehicles that had blood on the inside and outside of the vehicle. Officer Comer believed the blood came from the suspects. Officer Comer was able to locate a blood trail from one of the vehicles and followed it. While walking the trail Officer Comer located stolen property from the vehicles and continued to follow the blood. The trail led to the neighboring motel, The Budget Inn, room 110. Officers made contact with the tenant of room 110, and identified her. Officers searched the female’s room on consent and discovered stolen property from the thefts from vehicles at Guitars and other theft from vehicle incidents.
At the end of the shift Officer Rusty Comer had contacted numerous victims of the thefts and property damage at Guitars. He was able to return many stolen items back to their owners. One of the largest impacts of the investigation was the fact that he was able to locate a bottle of stolen medication from one of the victims. The victim stated the medication was for her heart and if it had not been located she was going to go the emergency department. The female was arrested for felony receiving stolen property.
This incident was started by Officer Comer providing extra patrols during his shift. When he recognized that several crimes had occurred he took the time to investigate the situation. Because of Officer Comer’s actions and relentless follow-up, he was able to make contact with a potential suspect and recover stolen property.
Thank you Officer Rusty Comer for your professionalism, willingness to go above and beyond in investigating crimes, and your ongoing commitment to the City of Joplin.

MSSU activities for the week of March 28-April 3
(From Southern News Service)
Two workshops designed to enhance the Writing in the Discipline program will be offered at Missouri Southern State University.
The first workshop, “Tools of the Trade: Grading Student Writing,” will be presented by Kathy Gray from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, in Room 147 of the Mills Anderson Justice Center. The second program, “Improving Student Writing,” presented by Don Judd is set for Wednesday, April 20.
The faculty sessions are offered by the Writing Program and the Teaching and Learning committees.
"For years now, employers have lamented the proficiency level of new college graduates in written communication. Much of this concern has resulted not from the lack of ability to pen a typical ‘term’ paper, but instead from lack of insight into how to communicate in terms, structures and media commonly associated with the career field – be it business or biology, math or medicine,” said Dr. Paula Carson, provost/vice president for academic affairs.
“Our emphasis on Writing in the Discipline mitigates this concern and enables our students to be more career-ready. That is because our students do not only learn to write, but write to learn – all in the context of their specific professions."
Activities slated for next week on campus include film screenings, business-development programs and a performance by the Southern Percussion Ensemble.

Nancy Hughes devotion: Don't tell me what to do
Key Scripture:
“He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.” Proverbs 19:16 (NIV)
Devotion:
Flying through the air on amusement park rides has been one of my favorite things to do for as long as I can remember. There is a healthy fear mixed with excitement as you experience the feeling in the pit of your stomach of being suddenly twisted or turned straight up in the air and just as suddenly shot downward.
Each ride is a bit different but one rule applies to all of them: pay attention to the instructions so you will not get hurt.
Last weekend my family and I were at a large amusement park and decided to ride a huge ship that swung forward and then backward between two giant metal beams. As it picked up speed, the ship got higher and higher in the air while swinging back and forth. Heavy bars held us in place in our seats but the instructions were very clear: do not stand up under any circumstances. Stay seated at all times. This was important because, even though we were “pushed” into our seats as we swung upward, the same was not true as we came downward. Standing up could have thrown us over the bar across our laps and caused major injury or even death.
Everyone was excited to ride and obeyed the rules – except one girl. She repeatedly stood up as the ride came down.
The man operating the ride could not have been clearer with his instructions. He repeated them as we stood in line, when we were getting on the ride, as we were seated and during the entire ride. He used a microphone to make sure that everyone heard him. His message was simple and consistent: “Do not stand up under any circumstances. Stay seated.”
But the young lady refused to listen or obey. She looked at him as he repeated his message but still chose to stand up with each swing.
Finally, after repeated warnings, the frustrated operator shrugged his shoulders as if to say “I’ve told her and told her. I have no other recourse than to stop the ride early” and that is exactly what he did.
Today’s Scripture could have been written with this young lady in mind. But the truth is, at one time or another we all fit into that “You can’t tell me what to do” category don’t we. We are warned by the Spirit when gossip creeps into our conversation or when we think one tiny lie isn’t a big deal. We can feel Him nudging us to speak to someone who is hurting or to send a note to encourage. It’s our choice whether or not to listen and obey. It’s not that we don’t recognize His voice; it’s simply a matter of choosing to obey or disobey His instructions.
The ride operator gave us instructions that were designed for a reason: to keep us physically safe. The same is true for the Spirit placed in each of us. His instructions, if we follow them, will help us to grow in our walk with the Lord and keep us spiritually safe.
My Prayer for Today:
Father, I choose today to follow Your instructions in my life. Please help me to listen as You speak to my heart and to obey. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Reflection:
Have you ever been given specific instructions but chose not to obey them?
Was the outcome positive or negative?
Application:
Journal a list of 10 specific instructions found in Scripture that pertain to you spiritually.
Beside each one, write down why God is specific in what He says and list ways you can obey His instructions.
Power Verses:
Proverbs 19:16 (NIV) “He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.”
John 10:4 (NIV) “When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”
Proverbs 19:27 (NIV) “Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.”

East Newton superintendent: No tax increase means just that
(From East Newton Superintendent Todd McCrackin)
Patrons of the East Newton School District,
There is a rule about bond issues that has been around for a long time. The 25-50-25 rule. Twenty-five (25) percent of the patrons will vote in favor of an issue without knowing what the issue is about. Fifty (50) percent of the patrons need more information to make up their minds on how to vote. Finally, there are twenty-five (25) percent of the patrons that would not vote to approve anything, no matter what the issue was about. Supporters have to then try to educate the fifty percent that need more information.
So, this letter is definitely not intended for the twenty-five percent that are “no voters”, even if the issue would not raise taxes. These folks just do not want to help any school, student, or staff. “No voters” come up with any excuse possible to say no. They even make up or twist facts about schools to try and prove points for voting no on an issue. What are their excuses? The school district wastes money, the school district spends too much on athletics; the performance of our district is poor, students are not graduating as smart as they once did. The list could go on forever. All of these excuses are validated for the “no voters” by perceived perceptions they have experienced with no research or statistical facts. Become educated so you can make an educated decision. Again, supporters will not change the “no voter’s” mind, but at least supporters can try to inform the fifty percent who need more information.
Now for the fifty percent that need more information. First, No Tax Increase means just that – the district tax levy will remain the same. Patrons have had the same levy amount for the past two years. If your assessed valuation increased then your taxes did increase – the school has nothing to do with that. The district has had a debt service levy since 1993.
Second, the Board has used the debt service fund wisely over the years. The district prepaid (extra payment) on the 2001 bond in 2013 and this March; saving tax payers almost $100,000 in interest. Third, each summer the district uses funds to make repairs, renovations, and upgrades to all three campuses if funds are available. Because our district receives most of its funding from the state, those funds have to be distributed to other areas – mainly salaries and operations. This leaves little funding for summer projects.
As a result, repairs, renovation, and improvements are being done on a very small scale. When some major catastrophe happens; projects have to be delayed until funding is available. This is what the district has been facing, an increasing gap in the ability to make repairs, renovations, and upgrades. Passing this bond issue would allow the district to gain ground on some overdue projects, not costing tax payers any additional money. The district cannot sit back and do NOTHING. Years of limited increases or even cuts to the state budget have affected all schools – mostly schools that primarily rely on state funding.
Remember, all Missouri school students depend on each of us to whom their future is entrusted. The students of today will take our places shortly; our hope is we served them well.
