Schifferdecker main pool to open for Labor Day weekend

Due to staffing shortages, Schifferdecker Aquatic Center will not offer the lazy river and slide portion of the center this holiday weekend, Joplin Parks and Recreation staff announced Wednesday. The main pool area will be open to the public, with the park offering reduced admission fees Saturday, September 3 through Monday, September 5. The reduction in personnel causes the whole facility to be inadequately staffed to properly and safely operate for the public.

The City announced a few weeks ago its staggered pool season closing dates to accommodate staff shortages. Officials say the scenario isn't that uncommon but it doesn't usually have this much of an impact.

“Our lifeguards are college and high school students. Starting in August we lose a majority of our lifeguards to school and/or sports,” said Jessica Johnson, Recreation Coordinator. We hired 87 lifeguards this season and only 10% of them can work, which isn’t enough to safely operate the entire Schifferdecker Aquatic Center facility. We have enough lifeguards scheduled to safely operate the main pool area while keeping our patrons safe.”

Due to the partial opening, admission fees will be half off. Adults will be $2.50 and children (15 & under) will be $2.00.

“Overall, we’ve had a great season. Attendance has been great and we have had a busy summer. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.” said Johnson.

The 2017 aquatic season will kick off Memorial Day weekend (May 27, 2017).

Portion of 7th Street in Webb City closed from today until Friday afternoon

7th Street will be closed beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, August 31st, at 7:00 am and continuing through Friday, September 2nd, till the afternoon. (Weather permitting)

Golden City man injured in collision with tractor-trailer on I-49 near Jasper

A Golden City man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 3:47 p.m. Tuesday on I-49, two miles south of Jasper.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2014 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Steven P. Fields, 51, Mosinee, Wisconsin, pulled from the shoulder into the path of a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Jerod M. Morey, 34, Golden City. The Morey vehicle struck the rear of the tractor-trailer.

Morey was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Lane closure on portion of 20th Street to continue until next Tuesday

There will be a lane closure on 20th Street between Maiden Lane and Annie Baxter in the southernmost eastbound lane starting Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at 6:30 a.m. and will continue until Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 6 p.m.

Also, as a result of the work zone, Porter Avenue will be closed at 20th St.

Closure is due to installation of a new sanitary sewer line.

Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in these areas and are urged to utilize alternate routes during this period.

The City appreciates your patience during the construction.

Joplin, Carthage men arrested for 7th and Moffet armed robbery

(UPDATE: Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney Dean Dankelson dropped two earlier armed robbery charges against Ace Mohr, one of the two men charged with today's armed robbery. Mohr is also awaiting trial on seven felony counts of drug possession and trafficking, including heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. The complete investigative report can be found at this link.)

 The investigation determined that the victim, Samuel J. Pasley, 34, Fairland, Oklahoma met the two suspects at Indigo Sky Casino and returned to Joplin with them.

Steven G. Prall, 25, Joplin, has been arrested for: Robbery 1st Degree, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, and Possession of Controlled Substance.

Ace N. Mohr, 23, Carthage, has been arrested for: Robbery 1st Degree, Possession of Controlled Substance and Armed Criminal Action

August 30, 2016 at 7:14 AM, Joplin Police responded to a report of an armed robbery in the area of 7th and Moffet Ave.

At this time, it appears that the victim was in a vehicle, accompanied by two newly met acquaintances.

One of the subjects displayed a firearm and robbed the victim of $500.00 cash. The victim was released unharmed from the vehicle in the area of 7th St. and Moffet Ave.

Officers located the two suspect a few blocks away. Both suspects have been detained.

Officers located methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana in the suspect’s vehicle. No firearm was recovered at this time. The investigation continues.

Department of Conservation schedules tree walks in Joplin, Monett

This time of year is a great time to get out, take a walk and enjoy nature. These walks can be through a neighborhood, park, or rural area. In addition to providing opportunities to get exercise, these walks provide great opportunities to learn about trees.

In September, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will hold tree identification walks in Joplin and Monett.

The Joplin walk will start at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 at Leonard Park, located in the 500 block of Turk Avenue in Joplin. The walk will begin near the park’s shelter.

The Monett walk will start at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 at South Park, located at the intersection of Missouri 37 and U.S. 60.

MDC Community Forester Jon Skinner will lead each walk. He will highlight identification details and benefits of species seen on the walk.

Five arrested on felony warrants, one DWI arrest during Fountain Road checkpoint

Captain Juan Villanueva, commanding officer of Troop D, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Jasper County on August 26, 2016. The location of the checkpoint was on Missouri Highway 43 at Fountain Road. A total of 839 vehicles were stopped, and the following is a list of enforcement contacts made during the operation.

Nancy Hughes devotion: Why Ya Gotta Be So Mean?

Key Scripture:

“A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself.” Proverbs 11:17 (NIV)


Devotion:

Some people are just plain mean. Not by accident, or a malfunctioning gene, or because it happens to be a bad day. They simply make the choice to be a combination of Cruella De Vil, Attila the Hun, and Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend – every day of their lives.

Now, as an admitted lifelong member of the glass-always-half-full, tomorrow-will-be-better, Duck Dynasty “happy, happy, happy” club, I have trouble figuring out why anyone would want to waste a perfectly good day by growling, snarling and snapping. Perhaps if you were a toilet paper recycler, you would have every right to be unpleasant and unkind and have a stinky attitude.

The majority of us are simply trying to use whatever talents the Lord has blessed us with while being nice…and cordial…and pleasant…But not mean people. Their talents always seem to be infected with a bad case of the nasty.

When kids at school were mean to me, my grandma would always say “Sweetie, what goes around comes around. Be patient. Meanness will be rewarded in the same way it was given.” Well, I saw it “come around.”

Let me explain. One of the requirements of my nursing school training was to volunteer in a nursing home. I found out immediately that I loved it. Oh, the wonderful childhood stories that the residents told as I was making a bed or helping with a bath. They would smile as they described homes with no electricity or running water and sewing patches on jeans that were already inches too short as they proudly made it through the “tough times.”

The staff working there were loving and kind, as if taking care of their own mother and father…all except one woman: Martha Jean. Behind her back, the residents called her Big Mean Martha Jean. After one hour at the nursing home, I understood why.

“Treat these old people like babies, ‘cause they ARE!” was her only advice to me as my mentor. That comment began an extremely stressful two weeks of training as I watched Big Mean Martha Jean intimidate and bully the residents.

I fell in love with one petite 92 year old lady named Nettie. She told me she had lived there for more years than she could count and the only time she didn’t love it was when Big Mean Martha Jean was working her shift.

Early one morning I went into Nettie’s room to help her because she had not been feeling well. I knelt beside the bed and asked “How are you today, Nettie?” but before she could answer, I heard Mean Norma Jean. “Get out of bed NOW!” she demanded. “You think you should get special treatment ‘cause you don’t feel good? Not on my shift!” She jerked the covers off both the bed and Nettie and stomped out.

I hugged Nettie. “Are you okay?” “Yes, yes, I’m fine. God is good. It’s going to be okay.” “Are you sure?” She nodded and smiled. “What goes around comes around. That’s what I always told my kids when they were little.”

A week later I was walking with Martha Jean when Nettie called from her room. “Miss Martha, could you come in here please?” she asked in her quiet, frail voice. “I need to talk to you, just for a second.” Big Mean Martha Jean rolled her eyes at me and sighed. “What does SHE want now? Come on.” as we turned back to go in the room.

Nettie had the covers of her bed pulled up under her chin with one tiny little hand grasping the silky edge. “Just come here for a minute, that’s all,” she encouraged.

As Martha Jean leaned over Nettie and snarled “WHAT? WHAT do you want?” Nettie’s left hand jerked down the covers and her right hand swung a pink furry house shoe with 100% accuracy, smacking Big Mean Martha Jean across the face. “Take that, you old heifer!” Mercy!

Nettie passed away about a year later and I have no doubt that God met her at the pearly gates and told her that her pink furry house shoes would not be needed since there is a “no heifers allowed” policy in heaven.

I’m told that Big Mean Martha Jean changed after that encounter with Nettie. From that moment on she stood at the door when elderly residents needed to talk to her for “just a second.” Everything else stayed the same…because, no matter what, some people are just plain mean.

Today’s Key Scripture in Proverbs 11:17 could clearly have been written for Big Mean Martha Jean. She certainly brought trouble on herself by how she treated other people. But I have to look inward, too. How many times have I been unkind and abrupt with someone when I could have just as easily treated them as I would have wanted to be treated? (Luke 6:31) How about you?

My prayer is that we will always remember Nettie and Big Mean Martha Jean and that no one will ever look at us and think “why ya gotta be so mean?”

Father, help me to always be an example of you to everyone. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Joplin police officer injured by escaping motorcyclist

On Saturday, 08-27-2016 at approximately 1:00 AM, Sgt. Rusty Rives observed two motorcycles eastbound on 32nd St. from Wisconsin Avenue.

The motorcycles were going one-hundred and twenty-four miles per hour. (124 mph.) The two motorcyclists were recognized as subjects that officers had multiple interactions with, wherein they taunt the police in order to attempt to prompt a pursuit.

Later into the shift, Sgt. Rives again observed the motorcycles traveling north on Main St. from 32nd St. when Paul G. Haney drove into oncoming traffic at a southbound police unit.

Sgt. Rives waited on foot at 15th and Main St. Upon their return they were stopped at the light and Sgt. Rives, on foot, approached Haney.

Sgt. Rives attempted to take Haney into custody. Once Rives grabbed Haney’s hoody. He became entangled in it as Haney took off at a high rate of speed. Haney dragged Sgt. Rives several feet. As a result, Sgt. Rives’ shoulder was dislocated.

Sgt. Rives transported himself to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Multiple agencies, including Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Newton Country Sheriff’s Office assisted in locating Haney.

The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against Haney for Felony Assault on Law Enforcement and a warrant was issued with a $5,000 bond.

On Sunday, August 28, 2016, Haney was arrested by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

(Jasper County Circuit Court records indicate that when the incident occurred Haney was free while awaiting trial on a felony drug charge.)

One arrested for DWI during Joplin Police weekend checkpoint

On Saturday August 27th, 2016 the Joplin Police Department along with members of the Southwest Missouri DWI Taskforce and the support of MADD hosted a DWI checkpoint at 34th and Main.

The goals of the checkpoint were to:

1. Detect and apprehend impaired drivers

2. Raise Awareness to the dangers of driving while intoxicated or impaired.

3. Encourage people to plan events and alternate transportation accordingly. The checkpoint was in service from 9:20 pm Saturday night until 2:00 am Sunday morning.

Seven hundred fifty-four drivers were contacted

-Eight field sobriety tests were conducted on subjects

-One DWI Arrest

-Four total tickets

-One total arrest

This checkpoint was funded through a grant provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division.

Joplin, Carthage men plead not guilty to Carthage armed robbery

The three men charged with first degree robbery and armed criminal action in connection with an August 22 armed robbery at a Carthage residence were arraigned and entered not guilty pleas Friday in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Carthage Police and Jasper County officers arrested Karon Lewis, 18, Carthage, James Johnson, 28, Joplin, and Everitt Britt, 28, Joplin, after a three-hour standoff at a home the three allegedly went to following the robbery, which occurred in a different part of the city.

At the residence, Carthage officers recovered items that were taken in the armed robbery, a Mossberg 500 shotgun with ammunition, a stolen Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun with ammunition, and a small amount of drugs and paraphernalia.

The next hearings for the three men are scheduled for September 14.

Jasper woman, Sheldon man injured in motorcycle accident

Two people were injured in a motorcycle accident 2:15 p.m. Sunday on Nutmeg Road, two miles west of Neck City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Gerald L. Watts, 39, Sheldon, traveled off the roadway and overturned, ejecting Watts and a passenger, Tammy L. Swan, 40, Jasper.

Swan was treated for serious injuries and Watts for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Neosho woman cited for felony drug charge, DWI, child endangerment

The Highway Patrol arrested a Neosho woman 8:06 p.m. Sunday in Newton County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated (drugs), and a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

The report indicates Hannah D. Irvin, 20, was also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and failure to display plates on a motor vehicle.

Oklahoma fugitive suspected in hammer attack arrested in Joplin

A fugitive suspected of involvement in a hammer attack, which left two people injured, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was arrested at a Joplin bus station Friday, according to KJRH in Tulsa.

Jose Diaz, 30, is charged with two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon. From the KJRH report:

Diaz is believed to be the last person seen running from the residence where two people were found with severe head wounds.

The attack, which left the victims in critical condition, occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. Thursday, August 18, in the 3500 block of W. 41st Street.

Diaz was taken into custody by the Southwest Fugitive Apprehension Marshal Task Force.

Joplin man injured in accident near Stark City

A Joplin man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 1:55 p.m. today on MO 86, one mile east of Stark City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Dodge Nitro driven by Joseph E. May, 49, Joplin, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a culvert.

May was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Joplin city offices to close Labor Day, changes for council meeting, trash routes

In recognition of the Labor Day holiday, the City of Joplin offices will be closed on Monday, September 5. This closing includes the Joplin Recycling Center, MAPS and the Sunshine Lamp Trolley services. The City of Joplin Recycling Center will also close for Saturday, September 3 of the Labor Day weekend. All City services will resume their regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, September 6.

Public Safety services and Airport operations will continue to operate throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend, as these departments run 24/7 throughout the year.

The Joplin City Council meeting, regularly scheduled on the first Monday, will shift to Tuesday, September 6. It will be held at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 602 South Main St.

Due to the holiday, residential trash and curbside recycling services will not be picked up on Labor Day, Monday, September 5. Customers who usually have trash and recycling picked up on Mondays will have their trash and recycling picked up on Tuesday, September 6. For the remainder of the week, the residential trash and curbside recycling collection will move forward one day with Friday’s customers having a Saturday pick-up.

The Republic Services Transfer Station in Galena, Kansas will also be closed September 3 through September 5. This “long” weekend is due to Kansas and Missouri solid waste, landfill, and transfer station regulations.

Joplin's Mercy Park to open Saturday

Don’t forget: Tomorrow the City is celebrating the opening of Mercy Park. Scheduled for 10 a.m. at the main pavilion near the pond, Joplin City officials will join Mercy Joplin representatives, and others who have been a part of the development of Joplin’s newest park.

City officials are excited to bring the public into this unique park, although they caution that recent rainfalls have disturbed some areas recently planted.

“Some remaining park landscaping continues, however some of the plant material recently installed had not been established long enough to withstand the heavy downpour we received Thursday night. Some replanting of materials will take place,” said Tony Robyn, project manager of Mercy Park. “This park will be a great addition to the park system and will offer many beautiful natural settings unique to our neighborhood parks.”

Located on the southeast corner of 26th and Maiden Lane, this 18-acre park includes trails, benches, picnic shelters, a pond, trees, native landscaping, and restrooms. This newest addition to Joplin’s park system was made possible through a land donation from Mercy Hospital, and funding through the City’s Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery program administered by HUD.

Guests attending the opening should park in the lot, just east of the park, accessible off of south St. John’s Boulevard.

 The Campus Activities Board will present indie-pop band My Body Sings Electric at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, in Taylor Performing Arts Center.

The Denver, Colo, band released their self-produced debut EP, “They Don’t Want Music,” in 2008. The next summer found them featured on the Warped Tour. Their 2011 album “Changing Color” made CMJ’s Top 200 chart and garnered them an appearance at Austin’s SXSW festival the following year.

With their introspective lyrics, danceable rhythms, intricate instrumental work and dynamic live shows, they've crafted a fresh, energetic take on indie, pop and alternative rock.

The concert is free and open to the campus community.

Dr. Marble to appear on ‘Newsmakers’

Dr. Alan Marble discusses the start of the new academic year in the latest edition of “Newsmakers” on KGCS-TV.

Rhode Island south of 20th Street to be closed next week

A Road Closure on Rhode Island south of 20th Street will occur on Monday, August 29th and will be closed until Thursday, September 1st.

Street closure is due to road work being done in the area.

A temporary road will act as a detour and will be available for local traffic to access the nearby residential area.

Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in these areas and will need to utilize alternate routes during this period.

Construction on 43/160 roundabout near Seneca to begin Sept. 6

Work to construct a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of U.S. Route 60 and Missouri Route 43 near Seneca is scheduled to begin the week of September 6, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Contractor crews will construct the new single-lane roundabout to replace the current four-way stop configuration with its stop signs and flashing red signals at the intersection. The project also includes installation of street lighting.

The intersection will remain open to traffic during construction. However, drivers can expect traffic delays due to narrowed lanes at times and occasional lane closures. During times of one-lane traffic, flaggers will guide drivers through the work zone.

Contractor crews will work primarily during daytime hours, with some nighttime work for paving.

Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone.

Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.

Joplin Police conducting DWI checkpoint this weekend

Joplin Police Department Cracking Down on Impaired Drivers August 26th through August 28th, 2016..

The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities.

Between 2012 and 2014, 668 people were killed and 2,448 were seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver in Missouri.

That’s why Joplin Police Department, along with the Southwest Missouri DWI taskforce, will conduct extra enforcement this upcoming weekend.

Consequences of impaired driving include jail time, loss of driver licenses, and being required to have an ignition interlock installed. Insurance rates go up.

Other financial hits include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job or job prospects. When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators can also face tremendous personal embarrassment and humiliation.

The Joplin Police Department wants all drivers to realize that driving impaired is simply not worth all the consequences.

Seneca woman injured in rollover accident

A Seneca woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 3:10 p.m. Thursday on Old 60 Drive, three miles west of Seneca.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2002 Cadi Deville driven by Kimberly M. Dunn ran off the roadway and overturned.

Dunn was treated for minor injuries at Freeman Neosho.

Road closure on East Plaza Drive to continue through Monday

A Road Closure on East Plaza Drive between Brownell Avenue .and Garrison Street will begin today, Thursday, August 25th at 5:00 p.m. and will be closed until Monday, August 29, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.

Street closure is due to road work being done in the area.

The road will be completely closed.

Detour routes will be in place. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in these areas and will need to utilize alternate routes during this period

Joplin, Duenweg units respond to structure fire at 3110 E. 10th

The Joplin Fire Department responded on 25 August 25, 2016 to a structure fire at 3110 E 10th. 

The initial call came in at 3:37 AM and the first fire crews arrived on scene at 3:44 AM, and found a single story residential structure with smoke coming from the eaves and attic area. 

Crews entered the structure and they were able to quickly extinguish the fire and confine it to the attic area. There were two occupants in the building and both were able to evacuate safely. The fire was brought under control at 4:15.

There were no injuries to firefighting crews or civilians.

The fire department responded with 6 apparatus and 17 personnel. Duenweg Fire Department responded as automatic aid with 1 apparatus and 2 additional personnel and METS responded with an ambulance.

After an investigation by Joplin Fire Department personnel the cause was determined to be electrical and caused approximately $15,000 to the residence.

Southwest City man cited for DWI after accident near Noel

A Southwest City man was charged with driving while intoxicated following a one-vehicle accident 5:45 p.m. Tuesday on Reagan Hollow Road, one mile east of Noel.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1993 GMC pickup driven by Jerred W. Robertson, 27, Southwest City, ran off the roadway and struck a fence.

Robertson suffered minor injuries.

MSSU Board receives Great Game of Education update

Creating a culture of financial transparency and employee involvement is at the center of the Great Game of Education, the Board of Governors learned during a presentation on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Missouri Southern State University

The rollout for the program was launched during the recent faculty/staff welcome meeting, with employees learning how to begin the introductory training module.

The university is working with the Great Game of Business division of SRC Holdings Corporation in Springfield, Mo., to develop the open-book management initiatives for a higher-education setting. Jack Stack, the founder, president and CEO of SRC Holdings, is a pioneer in successfully executing the business model.

“These are exciting times at Missouri Southern,” said Scott Cragin, a coordinator for the program. “We are the first institution of higher learning to implement the open-book management practices of The Great Game of Business.

“The system teaches all employees about the university’s finances and empowers them to change what they are doing in order to make the institution the best that it can be. Rewards are given for such improvements so every employee has a stake in the outcome. The transparency that comes with the Great Game of Education will do much to ensure that MSSU is on a sustainable financial path.”

In other business, the board approved a recommendation from the university’s Budget Audit Committee to move from fully funded insurance with Aetna to a partially self-insured group plan with Cigna effective Jan. 1, 2017.

Under the plan, which was also approved by Missouri Southern’s insurance committee, the university will carry a separate insurance policy that will trigger when employee claims reach a specified threshold amount. The university will then pay for each out-of-pocket claim as they are incurred, rather than paying a fixed premium to the insurance carrier.

In a report from Rob Yust, vice president of business affairs, the board learned that creation of a walking trail between Missouri Southern and Northpark Mall can move forward after issues with a flood plain have been resolved between the property owners involved.

The proposal calls for a 10-foot-wide asphalt trail that would be open to foot and bicycle traffic. The city of Joplin will oversee the trail’s construction, while the university will install lighting for the 2,000-foot-long trail.

Tuesday’s meeting marked the first for Glenn M. McCumber as board chair.

Meeting scheduled to discuss widening of East Zora

Widening Zora Avenue from Range Line Road to I-49 is one of the Capital Improvements projects passed by Joplin voters in 2014, and City officials are seeking input on the design of this project.

An Open House Public Meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30 in Room K120 of College Heights Christian Church located at 4311 Newman Road. Those attending should enter from the west side of the building coming from Lot F and entering Door #14. Residents are encouraged to attend this meeting and take the opportunity to discuss project details with the designers who will be finishing the plans.

At this phase of the project, City staff would like hear from the public during this opportunity to view the plans that have been developed by Bartlett and West, Inc., the city’s engineering/design consultant. Initial meetings to introduce the project to property owners along Zora Avenue were held last spring. City officials discussed the project and collected input into the design from those owners along this corridor.
