Public invited to informational meeting at Prairie State Park

Prairie State Park invites the public to an informational meeting at noon April 7. The meeting will be held in the park’s visitor center after the Bison Hike. The public is invited to share comments about the park and its operations. Park staff will be available to provide information about the park and answer questions.
Input from the public is important to Missouri State Parks. These informational meetings, which are being held in all state parks and historic sites, help create two-way communication with the public. The meetings give park staff the opportunity to let people know the current status and future plans for the park, and they offer visitors the opportunity to comment on the facilities.

Cherokee County Sheriff searching for Miami man wanted for felony aggravated assault

Suspect is wanted on Felony Aggravated Assault charges. Forbis is described as 5’10, 211 pounds, brown hair, blue eyes.

Joplin Police Department observing Child Abuse Awareness Month
This morning, members of our detective division, patrol division and command staff along with their families and kids, placed 229 blue pinwheels in the grass in front of the police department.
With April being Child Abuse Awareness Month, each pinwheel represents one of the 229 child abuse calls we responded to in 2017 that rose to the level of requiring an investigator to respond.
The garden will remain in place for the rest of the month, along with a second garden at the South Station.

Fairview woman, Purdy residents injured in two vehicle crash on 37
Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident 6:35 a.m. today on MO 37 at Purdy.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1999 Honda Accord driven by Aracely Nunez, 20, Fairview, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a 1992 Honda Civic driven by Miguel Paxtor, 35, Purdy, in the side.
Paxtor and a passenger in his car, Wilder Juarez, Purdy, were treated for serious injuries at Cox South Hospital, Springfield.
Nunez was treated for minor injuries at Cox Hospital, Monett.

A Neosho toddler was injured a car backed over him 2:05 p.m. today on a private driveway on Kodiak Road, two miles south of Neosho.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2012 Ford Escape driven by Jason L. McBryde, 30, Neosho was backing when he ran over Remington S. McBryde, 1, Neosho.
The child was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

This morning at 0125 a.m. we got a call about a truck that drove over the metal poles that mark parking spots in the middle of the parking lot in the 500 block of south Joplin.

This morning at 0125 a.m. we got a call about a truck that drove over the metal poles that mark parking spots in the middle of the parking lot in the 500 block of south Joplin.
The vehicle damaged the poles and left the scene.
An officer found the vehicle at 8th and Main and stopped it for the violations. The driver was very intoxicated and arrested for DWI with a BAC of three times the legal limit.

Wednesday at 3:44 p.m. officers responded to West 7th Street Wal-Mart for a fraud in progress.

Wednesday at 3:44 p.m. officers responded to West 7th Street Wal-Mart for a fraud in progress.
An officer stopped the suspects leaving at 4th and Schifferdecker while another officer went to the store to gather information. A male had contacted employees and identified himself as being from Wal-Mart Headquarters and attempted a fraudulent transaction to steal money from the store.
The store refused to comply with the false request and called police. It was learned the male had done the same things at other stores across Missouri. The male was arrested on charges from the same acts at a Mount Vernon store, after our officers contacted Mount Vernon Police Department. A female passenger was also arrested for a Felony Parole Violation Warrant out of Tarrant County, Texas. Cash and cards used in the fraudulent activities were located and seized.

Calf auction brings $15,000+ for Crowder Agriculture Division
Neosho, MO – As the gavel dropped, the Fifth Annual Calf Auction Fundraiser came to a close at Joplin Regional Stockyards on Wednesday, March 28th. The grand total for the campaign topped $15,000 which included the sale of the heifer, donation bids made at the auction, pre-sale donations and sponsorships from the surrounding community.
“It is unbelievably humbling to see the community of businesses, farms and families pull together to make this event so successful. Crowder Agriculture is honored to be a part of such a generous group of people who believe in our mission as we educate future agriculturalists. True servant leadership was exhibited today by our supporters. We can’t thank them enough”, said Jorge Zapata, Agriculture Division Chair
The Red Angus heifer was donated by Kunkel Farms, Dr. Dale Kunkel, owner. Proceeds are used to help support agriculture students as they travel to activities and competitions across the state and country.
New Mac Electric donated a grill that was also auctioned to add to the fundraising. Other sponsors include: Newton/McDonald County Cattleman’s Association, Animal Clinic of Diamond, Missouri Cattleman’s Association, B & M Tire, FarmTalk, The Cornerstone Bank, Tatum Motor Company Mahindra Tractors, Haggard Excavating, Hunke Spray Service, Fred Harris State Farm Insurance, Purina, Opal Foods, and Liberty Utilities Empire District.
Crowder agriculture students compete in professional and leadership development contests, along with experiential travel to a variety of agriculture industry operations. Internships and jobs have been gained from such travel.
Crowder’s Agriculture Division offers a variety of degrees that allow a student to pursue a career or transfer to a 4-year university. Degrees available include: Associate of Arts in Agriculture: Business, Education, Agronomy, Animal Science, Poultry Science and Pre-Veterinary Medicine; Associate of Applied Science in Agri-Business Technology: Agronomy, Horticulture, Livestock Production, Marketing & Management and Veterinary Technology.

Crowder College business contest results announced

The Crowder College Business Division held a successful high school business contest with over 500 students from 25 area high schools participating.
“Hosting our Annual Business Contest gives high school students an opportunity to experience the Crowder College campus and expose them to the business division and the various business courses that we offer. Additionally, it gives students an opportunity to assess what they have learned in their high school business courses. This year’s business contest was our best yet and we look forward to next year!” expressed Dr. Kali Bard, Business Division Chair.
Schools are divided into four divisions by size and then ranked based on points in each contest to earn sweepstakes awards. The following are the sweepstakes results:
Division I – Niangua High School
Division II – Liberal High School
Division III – Clever High School
Division IV – Neosho High School
All students and teachers participating in the event were provided a Crowder College Business Contest t-shirt sponsored by Wood, Cooper, and Peterson, LLC.

Springfield man injured in collision on 171
A Springfield man was injured in a two-vehicle collision 10:35 a.m. today on MO 171, one mile south of Carl Junction.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2017 Kenworth driven by Christopher A. Sorenson, 34, Springfield, was attempting to cross 171 and pulled into the path of a 2011 Ford F150 driven by Bradley G. Brinegar, 50, Pittsburg, Kansas, causing the Brinegar to vehicle to skid off the roadway and strike a utility pole.
Sorenson was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

During the operation troopers stopped 17 commercial vehicles and one passenger vehicle. Additionally, troopers conducted 16 commercial vehicle inspections which resulted in one driver being placed out-of-service.
Troopers issued 31 warnings for hazardous moving and other various offenses.

Sophomore Day at Missouri Southern to give high school students taste of college life

Nearly 1,200 high-school sophomores from around the area will gather for the fourth annual Sophomore Day event on Tuesday, April 3, at Missouri Southern State University.
This year’s event will include students from Webb City, Neosho, Monett, Aurora, Clever and Galena, Kan.
More than two dozen stations will be offered across campus for students to learn more about the wide variety of degree programs and opportunities available at the university. Faculty and staff members will be available at each of the stops to offer brief presentations.
“This event gives students a unique opportunity to explore what college life is all about,” said Cassie Mathes, director of University Relations & Marketing. “Sophomore Day gives our faculty a chance to showcase their academic areas and lets students know what we can offer them at MSSU.”
Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center, after which students will split into groups to begin tours. Closing ceremonies will start at 1:45 p.m.

More than two dozen stations will be offered across campus for students to learn more about the wide variety of degree programs and opportunities available at the university. Faculty and staff members will be available at each of the stops to offer brief presentations.
“This event gives students a unique opportunity to explore what college life is all about,” said Cassie Mathes, director of University Relations & Marketing. “Sophomore Day gives our faculty a chance to showcase their academic areas and lets students know what we can offer them at MSSU.”
Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center, after which students will split into groups to begin tours. Closing ceremonies will start at 1:45 p.m.

Yesterday evening our department responded to a local convenience store in reference to a “skimmer device” found on a gas pump.

Skimmer devices have turned up in our city on gas pumps, ATM’s and other debit/credit card devices for the last couple of years.
A simple google search of “skimmer device” and you see news stories from across the country of these being discovered, along with pictures of what they sometimes look like. Skimmer devices steal your credit card/debit card info and PIN when you use them where a skimmer device is installed. We wanted to offer the below tips to help the community avoid becoming a victim.
-Always check gas pumps and ATM’s for unusual devices stuck to them
-Watch for anyone lingering in the area for no apparent reason
-Always check for security tape on access points on the pump
-When possible, do not use the debit option as this allows an opportunity to record your PIN number.

World Music and Cuisine Festival to be held April 7 at MSSU

The fifth annual World Music & Cuisine Festival will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.
International students and community members will prepare their native dishes, while a variety of musical groups perform. Food samples will be sold for $1 each; for $8 to $10, a person can enjoy a complete meal complete with drink and dessert.
Presented by the MSSU Institute of International Studies and the MSSU International Club, the World Music & Cuisine Festival is a fundraiser for the university’s international students.

Entertainment will be provided by the MSSU Caribbean Steel Drums and Taiko Drumming at 5:15 p.m.; Kolograd, an Eastern European folk music band, at 6 p.m.; Saudi Ardah, a dance by students from Saudi Arabia, at 7 p.m.; and British Virgin Island students performing the official territorial song, “Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands,” at 7:15 p.m.
“We’re especially pleased to have Kolograd from Kansas City join us this year,” Stebbins said. “I heard them perform at Little Balkans Days in Pittsburg in September, and they were quite engaging, with a lot of people dancing to their music.”

Joplin trash rates to increase two percent

Weekly Trash Service - The City of Joplin has a franchised contract with Republic Services for residential trash and curbside recycling services for all single-family houses and duplexes. The contract allows for a 2% price increase on April 1, 2018.
Effective April 1, 2018, the rate will increase 22 cents, moving it to $11.40 (the City’s administration fee will remain at 55 cents), therefore the new monthly price for trash service will be $11.95 for residents living in a single-family dwelling or duplex. Currently the residential trash service monthly rate is $11.18 plus the 55 cents administration fee.
Curbside Recycling Service - Residents can also opt for having their recycling items picked up at curbside for an additional $4.75 per month. To encourage curbside recycling subscriptions and as a thank you to current recyclers, Republic Services has chosen to forego the contracted price increase for curbside recycling. Participating residents receive a 96-gallon polycart with a light blue lid labeled “Recyclables” for disposing all acceptable items (see list below.) Recycling is serviced the same day as trash, but by a different truck at a different time. Residents must enroll in this program to participate, and can do so by calling 1-800-431-1507 or online at www.republicservices.com/Joplin.
The following items will be accepted in the curbside recycling program and placed co-mingled (mixed all together) in the light blue lid cart: Aluminum Cans, Trays & Foils; Steel, Tin, and empty Aerosols cans; Plastic #1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 bottles and buckets; Paper and Newspapers; Cardboard and Chipboard. All items need to be clean, empty and dry, plus cardboard boxes need to be flattened.
Glass bottles, jars, or jugs are not be accepted as part of the curbside program, however, container glass will still be accepted at the Joplin Recycling Center located at 1310 W. A Street. The Recycling Center is open 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. For more information about the Joplin Recycling Center visit www.joplinmo.org/recycling.
Residents may still put out bulky items and properly prepared tree limbs next to their blue polycarts. It is not necessary to call Republic Services to schedule the bulky item pickup, but residents may contact Republic with questions regarding their items.
Transfer Station - The City of Joplin also has a contract enabling Joplin residential trash customers to drop off their bulky items at the Republic Services Transfer Station at 1715 East Front Street (Old Route 66) in Galena, Kansas. The contract allows for a 1% price increase on April 1, 2018. With this contractual increase, the new pricing, based on the length of trailers, ranges from $10.10 to $13.13 per load or $17.17 to $24.24 for loads that also include tree limbs and brush. Tires cost $4.54 each with a limit of five tires per trip. Any load over 2,000 pounds is not part of the subsidized program. Joplin residential trash customers must bring their residential City of Joplin utility bill for sewer and trash plus matching identification with them to the transfer station in order to receive the subsidized price.
Program hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12 noon to 2:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 8 a.m. to Noon.
Items that are not accepted include liquids, chemicals, hazardous materials, appliances, commercial waste, lead acid batteries, regular weekly trash, leaves and grass clippings. For information on how to dispose of these items, contact the City of Joplin at 417-624-0820 ext. 501.

The 29th annual Missouri Southern Regional Science Fair was held Tuesday, March 27, at Missouri Southern State University.

The competition for high-school and middle-school students is affiliated with the Society for Science and the Public. Individual or team (middle-school only) projects were accepted from: Vernon, Barton, Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Barry, Lawrence, Cedar and Dade counties in Missouri, and Neosho, Crawford, Montgomery, Labette, Bourbon and Cherokee counties in Kansas.
This year’s fair included entries from 72 students in the junior category (grades 5-8) and 23 in the senior category (grades 9-12) from Carthage, College Heights, Galena, Joplin South, Hume R-8, Seneca Intermediate, Sheldon R-8, and St. Peter’s Middle Schools, and Joplin, Lamar, Monett and Seneca High Schools.
First-place winners will receive a scholarship to Missouri Southern (graduating high-school seniors in the senior division), or a cash prize (for the junior division and all others in the senior division). Grand prize winners (two senior division and two junior) will also receive cash prizes. The senior grand prize winner will also receive an all-expense paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, to be held May 14-18 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Jasper traffic stop leads to execution of search warrant on area residence, arrest of two men on felony charges

On Tuesday, March 27th, 2018 at 1305 hours. Jasper Police Department made contact with subjects in an SUV parked on Pete’s Convenience Store parking lot. Contact was made in reference to suspicious activity.
Contact was made with a female in the driver’s seat and a male in the passenger seat. The female appeared to be heavily under the influence of methamphetamine. She was arrested for an active felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance and possession of meth-related drug paraphernalia.
This arrest subsequently led to Jasper County Sheriff’s Office conducting an investigation at a residence near south of Jasper at County Rd. 160 and Madre Lane.

After a search warrant was obtained, deputies searched the residence and seized a suspected methamphetamine lab and guns. Evan Masters was arrested on felony warrants and for creation of a controlled substance. Another person involved, Casey Gouge, could be facing drug and gun charges as well. Both Gouge and Masters are believed to be convicted felons. Masters is currently on parole in reference to felony evading and resisting arrest.
We got to work alongside members of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. They put some work in on this case and did an outstanding job.

On Wednesday, March 28th, 2018 at 1:09 pm, a Jasper PD officer stopped a black 2001 Ford truck with no license plates visible, near the intersection of Mercer and 6th St., Jasper, Missouri.
Contact was made with the driver, Kelsey Williams of Galena, Mo, and the front passenger, Brittany Kearney, also of Galena, Mo. Williams and Kearney both appeared overly nervous for a traffic stop.
Williams admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted. Marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia and a glass methamphetamine pipe was found.
Williams was charged with poss. of marijuana and possession of meth related drug paraphernalia. She also received several traffic citations.
Kearney was charged with possession of meth related drug paraphernalia.
Note: Kearney and Williams are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Statement from Missouri Southern State University regarding today’s state funding decision:
Recently, the Council on Public Higher Education (COPHE) unanimously voted to support a proposal by House Budget Committee Chair Scott Fitzpatrick to limit tuition increases in exchange for the restoration of $68 million in lost funding, which had previously been withheld by Gov. Eric Greitens. As part of this agreement, the universities will cap tuition increases at no more than 1% this fall.
Due to its status as having the lowest total funding per full-time student in the state, however, Missouri Southern State University was exempted from the agreement. This will allow the institution to increase tuition more than 1% this fall. The Board of Governors will set tuition rates for the Fall 2018 semester at their meeting in April.
“We're funded at extraordinarily lower levels than other Missouri universities, and have been for some time,” said President Alan Marble. “While we stand united with COPHE in supporting this measure to restore funding to higher education, we are evaluating our financial options and needs as we prepare to make tuition recommendations to our board. Affordable and accessible education is part of our mission, but we must keep Missouri Southern positioned to meet the needs of our students and surrounding workforce.”

Arrest made after gunshots in area of 4th and Patterson

At 4:51 p.m. today we received numerous 911 calls about gunshots in the area of 4th and Patterson.

At 4:51 p.m. today we received numerous 911 calls about gunshots in the area of 4th and Patterson.
Officers determined they came from the yard of 330 South Patterson. After some brief road closures, one adult male suspect from that address was taken into custody without incident. There are no injuries reported, and no further danger to the public.
The male arrested is the one who is alleged to have fired shots.
Detectives were on scene investigating the circumstances and no further information will be released until tomorrow.

Highway Patrol Troop D announces promotion of Carthage High School/MSSU graduate

Captain Juan Villanueva, commanding officer of Troop D, Springfield, announces the following promotions effective April 1, 2018.
Trooper Timothy A. Barrett is being promoted to the rank of corporal and will remain in his present assignment in the criminal interdiction/canine unit at Troop D. Barrett was appointed to the Missouri State Highway Patrol in January 2007, and after graduating from the Patrol Academy, he was assigned to Troop D, Zone 14, which serves the citizens of Barry County.

He graduated in 2002 from Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, with an associate’s degree in law enforcement.
Prior to his appointment with the Patrol in 2006, he was employed as a police officer with the Carthage Police Department. Trooper Barrett is married to Jessica (Ross) of Carthage, and they have two children, Jonah, 9, and Jenaveve, 4.
Trooper Eric L. Mueller is being promoted to corporal and designated the assistant zone supervisor of Zone 10, Webster County. Mueller was appointed to the Missouri State Water Patrol on January 4, 2004, and after graduation from the Water Patrol Academy, was assigned to Lake of the Ozarks. Mueller joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol on January 1, 2011, upon the merger of the two agencies, and was assigned to Troop D as a marine operations trooper at Table Rock Lake. On October 1, 2012, Mueller transferred to Zone 12, Christian County, where he has served as a road officer. Mueller was born in Branson, Missouri, and graduated from Branson High School in 1999. He later attended Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. Saturday morning at 6:37 a.m. a police officer went to an address in the 300 block of North Joplin to look for a wanted suspect.

A detective had developed probable cause to arrest a male for a stolen car case he was working. The officer located the male at the residence and arrested him without incident. The male was also found to be in possession of a bag of meth in his pocket, and the additional felony charges were added.
Crowder to hold high school business competition

The Crowder College Business Division will host its annual business competition Wednesday, March 28. This event will host approximately 550 high school students from 25 schools.
High School students will be competing in written tests including: Accounting, Business Communications, Business Math, General Business, Computer Applications, Marketing, Office Procedures, and Personal Finance. There are also performance events which include: Impromptu Speaking and Management Decision Making.
The competition will start at 9 a.m. with an award ceremony in the Bob Sneller Gymnasium at 1:15 p.m.

Guest cellist to join Southern Symphony Orchestra for concert
The Southern Symphony Orchestra will be joined by guest cellist Dr. Hyerim Jeon Mapp for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the concert hall at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School.
Mapp will perform Sir Edward Elgar’s much admired “Cello Concerto in E minor.”
She holds a doctorate of musical arts in cello performance from the University of Kansas. She is a lecturer of music at New Mexico State University and serves as cellist for the Las Cruces Symphony, El Paso Symphony, Roswell Symphony and the Camerata Del Sol Chamber Orchestras.
The concert at Missouri Southern – which is free and open to the public – will also feature the premiere performance of “Burlesca,” a piece written for the Southern Symphony Orchestra by conductor Dr. Jeffrey Macomber. The orchestra will also perform “Two Pieces” from the film score to “Henry the V,” with music by Sir William Walton; and “Polovetsian Dances” from the opera “Prince Igor” by Alexander Borodin.
Master Class
Mapp will present a special cello master class at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in Room 208 of the Fine Arts Building (Music Department) at MSSU.
High school and middle school-age students are invited to attend, play and receive comments.

Granby man injured in ATV-cow collision
A Granby man was injured in an cow-ATV collision 10:15 a.m. today on Shetland Road, two miles east of Granby on private property.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2016 Honda Rancher ATV driven by Chad A. Oxford, 22, Granby, struck a cow.
Oxford was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.
