Lion Co-op to help MSSU students with food insecurity

(From Southern News Service)

The Lion Co-Op has been founded at Missouri Southern State University to help students who are dealing with food insecurity. It will be located inside the FEMA shelter next to the residence halls.

MSSU faculty and students recognized this need last spring and sprang into action. Students researched those currently enrolled and realized that students were making hard choices about how to spend their limited resources.

“Food insecurity affects our ability to learn and work,” says Dr. Andrea Cullers, associate professor in the Kinesiology Department and registered dietician. “We want to provide the Lion community with resources that enhance their experience in the classroom and across campus. The Lion Co-Op will provide food assistance and personal hygiene items to all members of the Lion family.”

Spring 2018 Social Work students developed a Social Justice Project on nutritional resources for MSSU students and found the following:

* 257 students remained on campus during winter break.

* During semester breaks, only limited meals are served in Mayes Dining Hall.

* Limited transportation and money to access food was noted.

Spring 2018 Department of Kinesiology also asked Lifetime Wellness students to complete a food security survey. Some of the results were as follows:

* 25% reported that in the past 12 months they worried whether their food would run out before they got money to buy more.

* 21.6% reported that the food they purchased didn’t last and they didn’t have money to get more.

* 30.6% reported that they couldn’t afford to eat balanced meals.

The Lion Co-Op will provide food and personal items to MSSU students who need them in a discreet, safe environment. Monetary donations can be made to assist in the purchase of these items. A Crowdfunding account has been established - http://lionspaw.mssu.edu/goto/lionco-opfund.

All donations in support of the Lion Co-Op are considered gifts to the Missouri Southern Foundation.

Jasper County Sheriff: Adults try to lure children at rural Joplin home into car, same car may have been at local day care

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Office)

On 9/26/2018, shortly after noon, a vehicle occupied by possibly three individuals entered a mobile home park east of Joplin and approached the front yard of a residence where two small children were playing.

The vehicle stopped in front of the home while an adult who was at the residence momentarily went into the house. When the adult at the residence went back outside and noticed the car parked in front of the residence with the rear driver side door open and an occupant calling for the children; one walking toward the car.

The adult confronted the occupants of the vehicle. The driver drove away and was not located by law enforcement dispatched to the scene.

The vehicle is described as a dark grey in color, four door compact sedan, possibly a Dodge Neon or similar make and model.

The car had a rear spoiler on the trunk lid and a missing driver side rear hubcap or small “donut” spare tire. Video surveillance footage of the suspect vehicle was captured at the mobile home park.

During investigation into this incident a vehicle matching this description was seen on 09-26-18 and today, 09-27-18, at a daycare facility east of Joplin in the early morning hours during child drop off time.

The vehicle was occupied by a male driver and female passenger wearing hats and sunglasses. Any information regarding this vehicle or the occupants can be directed to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Detective Michael Hollier at 417-358-8177 ext. 1260.

Joplin Recycling Center to hold free document shredding event

(From the City of Joplin)

Many people may have personal papers that are no longer needed and are cluttering their house, but fear of identity theft prevents some people from trashing or recycling these sensitive documents.

The Joplin Recycling Center, 1310 West A Street, can help. On Saturday, November 17, in celebration of America Recycles Day, the Center will host a shredding event, in which large amounts of paper can be shredded quickly at no cost to area residents. this opportunity is only available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the document shredding company, CRC Shredding, will have their mobile shred truck at the Center. This event is free and open to all residents.

The event is sponsored by the Joplin Recycling Department, the Joplin Police Department, Region M Solid Waste Management District, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Captain Trevor Duncan reminds residents, “Identity thieves can turn your trash into cash, regardless if it is printed or electronic.”

Identity theft resulting from items stolen from the trash or curbside recycling bins is the easiest type of crime to prevent. By completely shredding documents, receipts, address labels, or pieces of paper with identifying information like account numbers, you can stop identity theft. But simply ripping an item a few times by hand is not sufficient! Identity thieves will spend hours putting ripped documents back together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Types of items identity thieves seek include:
Expired credit and debit cards
Credit and debit card receipts
Unused credit card checks
Credit card statements
Canceled checks
Investment account statements
Pension account statements
Paycheck stubs
Wage and earnings statements
Phone and utility bills
Retail invoices and statements
Tax returns and statements
Medical bills
Insurance claim information
Checking and savings account statements
Pre-approved credit card offers and applications
Insurance policy information (auto, health, life)
Expired identification documents (driver’s licenses and passports)

Even return addresses on envelopes indicate where you bank; who your doctor is; where your investments are held; who your mortgage is maintained by and provide other similar information that provides a blueprint of your life.

If residents fear they have been a victim of identity theft, they should contact their local law enforcement agency.

Mary Anne Phillips, Recycling Coordinator said, “We are happy to bring this event to the Joplin community in celebration of America Recycles Day, but for those who cannot attend, the Recycling Center has a paper document destruction service all year.”

The Center utilizes three locked 96-gallon containers that are switched out with empty containers on a weekly basis by CRC Shredding. The process is self-serve---patrons can drop approximately 200 pages at a time through the restricted opening on the container. This service is no cost to patrons. All paper is shredded, mixed with other non-sensitive shredded paper, pulped, and then used in the manufacture of products such as egg cartons.

The Center is open Tuesday and Thursday from Noon to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For more information, contact:

Mary Anne Phillips, Recycling Coordinator 417-624-0820 extension 501;

Captain Trevor Duncan, 417-623-3131 extension 600;

Jennifer Shotwell, Region M, 417-649-6400 extension 302

Sensory room added at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

Everything about the contents and ambiance of a new sensory room on the campus of Missouri Southern screams “relax,” which is the entire point.

Located in the Student Success Center in Hearnes Hall, the room provides a therapeutic way for visitors to de-stress and enjoy activities that stimulate all of the senses.

“I belong to a national organization called the Association on High Education and Disability, and every year I go to the national conference,” says Lori Musser, coordinator of Student Disability Services. “This year they had set up a sensory room and I went to look at it.”

“We see a lot of students who have been diagnosed with anxiety or ADHD and need those senses stimulated.”

An empty office was available in the Student Success Center, and it was soon stocked with items that make the sensory room so engaging. There’s a space to enjoy coloring, music, a weighted blanket, music, a sand tray, and a “plant” made of fiber optic strands to run your hands through.

The room was completed about two weeks ago. Signage was put up in Hearnes Hall and students have already started taking advantage of the room.

“We’ve had students who pass the signs come in to check it out,” says Musser. “It’s a place where they can come in and relax if they’re feeling stressed out.”

But the sensory room isn’t just for students. If faculty or staff members are in need to a place to de-stress, the sensory room is open to all.

“We all need it. We all get stressed out,” says Musser. “You’re more productive if you’re relaxed.”

Southern Theatre to present Ibsen's "Ghosts" October 3-6

(From Southern News Service)

Southern Theatre will present “Ghosts” by Henrik Ibsen at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, through Saturday, Oct. 6, in the Bud Walton Theatre at Missouri Southern State University.

Directed by Dr. Jim Lile, Ibsen’s masterful work is about the corrosive effects that the past can have on the present. Upon its premiere in England in 1891, “Ghosts” was angrily dismissed as “an open drain” and “literary carrion.” The play remains, however, as a powerful example of realistic play writing, with a spellbinding plot and complex characters that continue to attract the world’s finest actors.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students, and can be purchased at the door. The box office will open at 6:30 p.m. for each performance.
