Main Street parking, trolley routes to shift for next week's Joplin Christmas Parade
(From the City of Joplin)
The City of Joplin reminds citizens that the annual Christmas Parade is set for Tuesday, December 4. Freeman Health System is the host for this year’s parade, which has the theme “Santa’s Workshop”.
The parade begins at 6 p.m., starting from 15th and Main Street and traveling north to 3rd and Main Street, with the parade judges stationed at 8th and Main Street. Volunteers helping with the parade can be found throughout the route and will be designated by the safety vests they will be wearing.

Toby Teeter named new Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce president
The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce (JACC) announced Thursday that the Chamber Board Directors has appointed Tobias (Toby) Teeter as the new President.
Teeter is native to the greater Joplin area and brings strong entrepreneur experience to the organization. A graduate from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in finance and insurance, he later attended the University of Missouri, graduating from the School of Law in 1999. Following school, Toby went to work for Hendren and Andrae, LLC in Jefferson City, MO as an associate attorney and registered lobbyist.
After his time at the Missouri State Capitol, he ventured out to begin his first of many companies, Litmus Media, Inc., based in Kansas City, MO. He later sold the company and relocated back to the Joplin area.
While back in Joplin, Toby kept his entrepreneurial spirit alive, investing in several tech start-ups. During this time he was involved with redeveloping the Gryphon Building located at 10th & Main Street.
In 2014 Toby founded two new companies, LocalRaces.com LLC and Mr. Bigg Deals, both of which reside in the Chamber’s Joseph Newman Innovation Center.
“Toby has a strong background in starting and running small firms. He brings a heart for entrepreneurship and small business which will enhance the Chamber’s efforts to grow business,” shared Rob O’Brian, former Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce President.
Throughout Teeter’s career as an entrepreneur, he has taken time to give back to the local Joplin and Carl Junction communities. He has served on boards for the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts and Downtown Joplin Alliance, where he was the driving force behind Joplin Third Thursdays.
In addition he served on the Carl Junction Educational Foundation Board of Trustees and in 2012 was honored by the City of Carl Junction with the Citizen of the Year Award.
Brandon Davis, Chairman of the JACC Board said, “After interviewing candidates from many backgrounds, the Search Committee, Chamber Board and stakeholders were impressed by Toby’s knowledge of chamber work, his ideas for leading our Chamber, and his passion for our community and desire to see it grow and thrive. The Board looks forward to working with him to make Joplin a great place to live and work.”
The selection comes after a five month process following a nationwide search conducted by Waverly Partners, LLC, which was selected by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
The JACC President’s seat was left vacant with the departure of Rob O’Brian after a 23-year tenure. After a thorough selection process, the search committee made up of Chamber members and community stakeholders conducted an extensive series of interviews.
Teeter’s first day with the Chamber will be December 10, 2018. As President, he will help set the future direction of the Joplin area business community through economic development, public policy, and investor relations.
The Chamber has a rich history of providing strong support to the community and local businesses; staff is excited to begin the new chapter under the direction of Mr. Teeter.
Joplin doctor using new technology for shoulder replacement surgery
(From Freeman Health System)
Orthopaedic surgeon Todd Twiss, MD is now using a new technology for total shoulder replacements in the Four States area. ExactechGPS® Guided Personalized Surgery is the latest advancement in technology that provides surgeons with real-time visual guidance and alignment data in shoulder replacement surgery. Freeman Hospital is the first facility in the state to utilize ExactechGPS.
Similar to a navigation device in your car, this advanced platform provides a visual map of the patient’s joint on a screen, allowing surgeons to combine preoperative planning with intraoperative computer-assisted technology, to perform implant alignment relative to the patient’s needs.
“This innovative technology allows me to plan the operation before entering the operating room,” said Dr. Twiss. “Using ExactechGPS, I now have the confidence to precisely execute my surgical plan, with a goal of improving implant longevity and, ultimately, patient outcomes.”
The technology’s preoperative planning tool allows surgeons to plan their cases in advance of the surgery through a virtual simulation. Surgeons can then execute their plan in real time during the surgery based on a 3-D anatomical model of the patient’s shoulder, making adjustments as needed.
With the help of ExactechGPS, a surgeon can see important parts of the shoulder anatomy that are normally difficult to view during surgery. With this comprehensive visual, the surgeon can verify precisely where to remove damaged bone and place the implant.
“Freeman is proud to invest in this exciting technology, furthering our commitment to providing the latest in technology with a goal of advancing patient care,” said Paula F. Baker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Freeman Health System.
Combined with the Equinoxe® Shoulder System which has demonstrated excellent biomechanics and outcomes in its more than 10 years of use1, surgeons are able to have the best of both worlds – a proven implant foundation1 with today’s most modern surgical technologies.
For more information about ExactechGPS or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Twiss, call his office at 417.347.5400 or visit freemanhealth.com/ortho.
Additional information about the technology can be found at ExactechGPS.com.
Todd Twiss, MD – Orthopaedic Surgeon
Todd Twiss, MD is board certified in orthopaedic surgery. He provides expert care to patients needing hip and knee replacement, as well as corrective surgery on shoulders, elbows, ankles and feet.
Dr. Twiss earned his medical degree and received residency training in orthopaedic surgery at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He completed a shoulder and elbow fellowship at St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute in Columbus, Georgia; focusing on the treatment of shoulder, elbow and sports-related injuries. During his medical training, he presented research to fellow physicians at numerous medical conferences.
While earning a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry at the University of Georgia, Dr. Twiss received special acknowledgement for his contribution to nationally-published biochemistry research. Prior to earning his undergraduate degree, he studied chemistry and competed on the varsity swimming team at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Recipients of Humphreys Excellence Awards to be honored Thursday at MSSU
(From Southern News Service)
More than 30 recipients of the Debra and David Humphreys Excellence Award at Missouri Southern State University will be recognized during a special reception set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, on the fourth floor of the TAMKO Executive Center, 211 Main St.
Established by the Humphreys in 2017 with a $1 million gift, the scholarship will be awarded annually over a 10-year period. The recipients – known as Humphreys Scholars – are graduates of high schools within 50 miles of Missouri Southern and majoring in one of the following areas: Biological and physical sciences, mathematics, education, accounting, finance, engineering technology or computer science.
To be eligible, students must meet one of the following criteria:
· At least a 3.7 high school or collegiate GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
· A 28 or above composite ACT score or a combined critical reading and mathematics score of 1300
· Graduate in the top 10 percent of their high-school class
The annual scholarship is renewable for up to eight semesters, so long as the recipient maintains a 3.5 GPA. The current average collegiate GPA for the 2018 recipients is 3.84.
The Humphreys are known for their support for education in the region. David Humphreys has served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Joplin-based TAMKO Building Products since 1994, a company which his grandfather started in 1944. He and his wife, Debra, played an integral role in the 1993 establishment of Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, an independent, private school established in Joplin. Debra serves as the chair of the school’s Board of Trustees.
Debra Humphreys said the award was established as way to make the dream of a college degree more affordable for students in the community.
“Our family has been a longtime supporter of public and private schools in the area because we believe education is the key to a strong and vibrant community – our community,” she said. “We view this gift as an investment in the future of the Joplin community that our family has called home for 75 years, and with more local students able to obtain degrees from a local university, our hope is that some of those Humphreys Scholars will then share their expertise and gifts within our community.”
Dr. Alan Marble, president of the university, said the Humphreys’ reputation for generosity and thoughtfulness has been well-earned.
“David and Debra’s faithful support of Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, the restoration of some of Joplin’s most cherished and historic homes, and their very generous scholarship program at Missouri Southern serve as examples of their benevolence,” said Marble. “On behalf of MSSU and each Humphreys Scholar, allow me to express our deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to this wonderful couple.”

The Pittsburg Police Department is currently accepting applications for our 12th Annual Citizens’ Academy.
The academy is designed to help citizens understand the inner workings of their local police department. The classes offered through this academy focus on police training, police procedures, legal issues, and basic philosophies of the department. Our goal for the academy is to provide “understanding through education” and to give the public an open and honest view of the agency entrusted to serve and protect them.
We are striving to improve the relationship between the community and police officers, while enhancing mutual respect and trust for one another. Working together we can create a better tomorrow.
This is a 10-week academy starting on January 31, 2019 and commencing with our graduation ceremony on April 11, 2019.
Some of the topics covered during this academy session will include; patrol procedures, use of force, search and seizure, homicide investigations, and narcotics investigations. Class participants will also be involved in several hands on courses to include mock crime scene, emergency vehicle operations, and firearms.
Sessions will be every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and will include two Saturday sessions. Class is not scheduled during the week of Spring Break.
All applicants must be 18 years of age and must reside, work, own a business, or attend college within Crawford County. Three arrested for drug trafficking near Baxter Springs school, cocaine, marijuana confiscated
(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)
A search warrant was executed Tuesday evening as part of a month-long investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office into suspected drug activity near a Baxter Springs school.
Just before 7:00 p.m., Sheriff’s Investigators and the Baxter Springs Police Department served the warrant at 1331 Lincoln Avenue.
“During the course of the investigation, and subsequent search of the home, suspected cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and evidence of drug distribution was seized,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.
Three suspects were taken into custody Tuesday night and transported to the Cherokee County Jail.
Arrested at the scene were:
Jacob Eiland, 18, (center photo) and 20-year-old Hannah Spradlin, both of the home. They each face allegations of Possessing Marijuana with Intent to Distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Marijuana, Felony and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. They are each being held on $33,000 bond.
Also arrested was Jordan Lee, 18, of Baxter Springs. Lee posted $3,000.00 bond on allegations of Possessing Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia.
“Drug distribution, regardless of the drug, is an inherently dangerous crime and this case is especially concerning due to the close proximity to one of our elementary schools, the presence of cocaine and the young ages of the suspects involved.”
“Because of their ages, this case can serve as a good reminder for parents to be engaged with their kids and have open honest conversations about the dangers of drug use and associating with those who chose that type of criminal activity,” concluded Sheriff Groves.

(From the Joplin Public Library)
Joplin Public Library (JPL) will host a special celebration from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11. Beginning at 4:00 pm, the therapy dogs from the Dog Day Afternoon program at JPL will be at the library dressed for the holidays and ready for photo opportunities!
Not interested in pictures? Then join us for a reading activity. All children ages fifth grade and under will be welcomed to pet the dogs, practice informally telling them stories or reading, or just making some new, furry friends. Throughout the program children will have the opportunity to help decorate the Children’s Department Christmas tree with homemade crafts and ornaments.
