Lamar man injured in one-vehicle crash on 160

A Lamar man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 5:35 p.m. today on U. S. 160, one mile west of Lamar.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2004 Hyunadi Sonata driven by Scott N. Gardner, 57, Lamar, traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned.

Gardner was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Joplin Fire Department reminds residents to turn back clocks, check smoke detectors this weekend

(From the Joplin Fire Department)

As citizens “fall back” and move their clocks back one hour this weekend as daylight savings time comes to an end the Joplin Fire Department urges families to take steps to make their homes safer by changing the batteries in their smoke alarms.

According to a 2019 report by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half.

In addition, NFPA noted:

In 2012-2016, smoke alarms, including those in fires too small to activate them, operating smoke alarms, and those that failed to operate, were present in almost three-quarters (74%) of reported home fires and sounded in more than half (53%) of the home fires reported to U.S. fire departments.

Almost three out of five (40%) home fire deaths resulted from fires in which no smoke alarms were present at all.

The death rate per 1000 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke detectors (12.3 per 1000 fires) vs. homes with working smoke detectors at (5.7 per 1000 fires).

Dead batteries caused 25% of smoke alarm failures.

One percent of the deaths resulted from fires that were too small to activate the smoke alarm.

Of the main reasons why smoke alarms failed to operate is due to missing batteries or dead/discharged batteries. The NFPA report is full of statistical data. The bottom line is working smoke alarms provide early warning saving lives, preventing injury and reducing property damage.

Smoke alarm batteries should be changed bi-annually, and detectors replaced every 10 years. Smoke alarms are available with non- replaceable batteries and are designed with a 10-year life span. However, whether replaceable battery or long-life battery they should be checked monthly.

“We just want to encourage all residents to be aware of the safety precautions they can take to protect their families and pets,” said Fire Chief Jim Furgerson. “Installing a new battery is a simple measure that could prove to be life-saving.”

For more information about fire protection and safety, visit the Association’s site at http://www.nfpa.org.

Other safety tips homeowners can take as cooler weather approaches:

1. Have your furnace checked.

2. Have your chimneys and vents checked.

3. Test smoke alarms.

4. Cover the fireplace with a screen.

5. Beware of lit candles.

6. Beware of space heaters.

7. Know how to put out kitchen fires quickly.

8. Practice an escape route.

9. Fire extinguishers can be life-savers.

10. All household members should know 911.

MODOT schedules public meeting in Carl Junction for project relocating 171-96 intersection

(From MODOT)

A project to relocate the intersection at Missouri Route 171/Route 96 and Jasper County Route YY to improve safety is the focus of a public meeting on Thursday, November 7, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The plans call for relocating the intersection to the east and to convert the intersection to a multi-lane roundabout. In addition, an approximately 14-mile stretch of Route 171 between the Missouri/Kansas state line and Fir Road will be resurfaced.

The come-and-go style meeting will be held 4:30-6 p.m., Thursday, November 7, at Carl Junction High School in the Commons Area, 206 South Roney Street, Carl Junction. NO FORMAL PRESENTATION IS PLANNED. Those who attend may come at any time between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to learn about the project and ask questions.

For those unable to attend the in-person meeting, an online public meeting will be available and will go “live” on Thursday afternoon. The same displays for the project used during the in-person meeting will be posted to the online meeting at www.modot.org/southwest.

The existing intersection is located immediately adjacent to the Kansas City Southern (KCS) railroad tracks which parallel Missouri Route 171. Vehicles, especially large semis and farm equipment, approaching from the west on Jasper County Route YY often must sit across the railroad tracks while waiting for a gap in traffic on Route 171, causing a significant safety concern for both the traveling public and KCS trains. The project will increase the space between the railroad tracks and Route 171, improving safety.

For much of the construction of the new intersection and roundabout, drivers will be able to travel along the existing roads. However, at times it will be necessary to close the roads. At those times, drivers will be directed to use signed detours along Missouri Route 43 and Jasper County Routes KK, YY and Z.

Construction on the project is expected to begin in 2021
