Washington Avenue between North College and Broadway in Neosho to be closed

The City of Neosho Public Works Department has announced that Washington Avenue, between North College and Broadway will be closed to through traffic beginning Wednesday, March 4 at 7:00 AM through Thursday, March 5th, 2020.

Work is being done to repair and adjust the approaches to the bridge located on Washington Avenue.

Seneca Police recover Jeep stolen from Carthage owner

On 2-27-20 Officer Thiel attempted to conduct a stop on a Jeep Cherokee for possible DWI. The vehicle failed to stop for Officer Thiel and continued east on K High.

The Jeep turned south on Maple and traveled approximately one mile to the intersection of Maple and Condor where it ran off the road. 

The driver exited the vehicle and ran into the woods. 

The passenger was detained by Officer Thiel. It was determined the Jeep was stolen out of Carthage. 

We will release the name when formal charges are filed. Good Job Officer Thiel.

On 2/23/20, Officer Zimmerman made a traffic stop at Cherokee/Delaware for an equipment violation.

The driver, Stephen Allen May II was arrested on a Joplin Warrant for: DWS/DWR and No Insurance. May was transported to Newton County Jail.

City of Joplin to participate in Statewide Tornado Drill Tuesday

Severe Weather Awareness Week will be recognized from March 2 to 6 to help Missourians learn more about potential severe weather and how to prepare for possible weather conditions in upcoming comings.

The National Weather Service (NWS), State Emergency Management Agency and Keith Stammer, Joplin and Jasper County’s Emergency Manager, urge Joplin citizens and all Missourians to use this week’s resources to learn about severe weather and how to protect themselves in various scenarios.

The highlight of the week is the statewide tornado drill which will be initiated by the NWS at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3. Should hazardous weather be a threat, the drill will be postponed until 10 a.m. on March 5.

This tornado drill will be observed by the City of Joplin by sounding the warning sirens for a full three minutes, the same amount that would occur in an actual warning. In addition to the City’s procedures during the drill, the National Weather Service and the State Emergency Management Agency will be conducting their tests using various news mediums and alert systems. This test will cause NOAA Weather Radios to activate.

During the annual Statewide Tornado Drill, citizens are reminded to practice taking shelter. If a tornado shelter is not available, the safest shelter location is a windowless basement or an interior room in the lowest level of a building. Put as many walls between you and the tornado. Other safe locations for businesses and schools include interior stairways and tornado safe rooms.

As this drill kicks off the 2020 Severe Weather Awareness Week, observed from March 2 - 6, Keith Stammer, Emergency Management Director, encourages everyone to be proactive and prepare for weather safety. Preparing today may make the difference in surviving the storms to come this spring. He also encourages people to seek appropriate notification system and reminds the public about the warning sirens’ purpose.

“The sirens provide a warning for anyone who is out of doors to go indoors, if possible, and take shelter,” he said. “People indoors cannot always expect to hear the outdoor warning sirens.”

Stammer encourages residents to utilize a NOAA Weather Radio that provides a warning signal when the area is under a watch or a warning. “The advantage of having a weather radio is that you hear the alerts directly from the National Weather Service, and are kept current of the warning status.” Weather radios are available at local retailers.

Lion Cub Academy to celebrate Read Across America

The Lion Cub Academy at Missouri Southern State University will celebrate Read Across America with a week devoted to the writings of Dr. Seuss.

Beginning Monday, March 2, and continuing through Friday, March 6, volunteers from around campus will visit the LCA to read books aloud to children. Read Across America is observed annually on the school day closest to March 2, which is also the birthday of Dr. Seuss – writer Theodor Geisel.

“I want kids to see that reading is important to everybody,” says Nikki Tappana, director of the Lion Cub Academy. She says she hopes to have 100 volunteers from around campus to read to the 115 children, ages 1 to 5, served by the center.

“No matter what anyone’s job is on campus, I think it’s important for them to read to the children and show them how important reading is,” she says. “I want the kids to have a love for reading and to know that it can be fun.”

The Lion Cub Academy offers a hands-on learning environment for early childhood and teacher education students. It provides care for the children of students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community.

The Read Across America activities will conclude at 3 p.m. Friday, March 6, with a visit by one of Dr. Seuss’ best known characters, the Cat in the Hat.

Neosho woman injured in collision with deer on I-49

A Neosho woman was injured in a one-vehicle, one-deer collision 6:50 a.m today on I-49, a half mile south of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Toyota Corolla driven by Huldi L. Cifuentesreyes, 27, Neosho, struck a deer in the roadway.

Cifuentesreyes was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Carthage teen who caused head-on collision seriously injuring two, cited on DWI, assault, drug charges

The Carthage teen who caused a head-on collision injuring a Carl Junction woman and a Webb City teen, was charged with driving while intoxicated on drugs, according to the Highway Patrol report.

The crash occurred 3:47 p.m. Thursday on Fir Road at County Road 303, three miles west of Joplin. Anthony Dobias-Castillo, 17, driving a 2009 Nissan Maxima, crossed the center line and struck a 2018 Subaru driven by Jillean K. Murphy, 38, Carl Junction, head on.








Murphy and a passenger in Dobias-Castillo's vehicle, Joshua E. Boles, 18, Webb City, were taken to Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, with serious injuries.

The Highway Patrol accident does not indicate any injuries for Dobias-Castillo.

In addition to driving while intoxicated (drugs), and two counts of assault, Dobias-Castillo was also charged with marijuana possession, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, no insurance, violating a driver's license restriction and for not wearing a seat belt.

Lamar man injured in accident on 43

A Lamar man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 11:15 a.m. today on MO 43, eight miles south of Liberal.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Kia Optima driven by Cody A. Stewart, 26, Lamar, struck a large amount of gravel on the roadway, left the road and struck an embankment.

Stewart was treated for minor injuries at Cox Barton County Hospital, Lamar.

Carl Junction woman, Webb City teen seriously injured in head-on collision on Fir Road

Two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision 3:47 p.m. today on Fir Road at County Road 303, three miles west of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2009 Nissan Maxima driven by Anthony L. Dobia-Castillo, 17, Carthage, was westbound on Fir Road and crossed the center line as a 2018 Subaru Outback driven by Jillean K. Murphy, 38, Carl Junction, was traveling south on County Road 303 and entered the curve as the roads intersected with no traffic control.

Enrollment open for Jasper County Extension Master Gardener program

There is still time to enroll in the Jasper County University of Missouri Extension Missouri Master Gardener training program. Classes will meet Tuesday and Thursdays from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. beginning March 5, and winding up April 9. Each session is designed to train volunteers in various aspects of horticulture. The Master Gardeners participate in a wide variety of community service projects and assist University of Missouri Extension in providing unbiased, educational information to the public. There is a $200 training fee for the course.

The Extension Master Gardener Certification Training Course prepares volunteers to fulfill the mission of “Helping others learn to grow.” Subject matter includes technical horticultural information as well as public speaking, educational techniques, information sourcing, volunteer management, and project leadership.

Technical horticultural information includes topics such as home fruit production; woody ornamentals – establishment and care; home lawn and turf; soils and plant nutrition; plant diseases; insects, plant propagation; pest management; vegetables; pruning; and herbaceous perennial flowers.

To complete certification requirements, volunteers must contribute 30 hours of their time in MU Extension approved garden-related projects.

After completing the classroom training, the new Master Gardener Trainees use their skills learned in class to provide at least 30 hours of volunteer service to University of Missouri Extension conducting horticulture education programs. Examples of programs conducted by Master Gardeners are answering garden questions from the public at extension events, working with community gardening projects, conducting demonstration gardens, working with youth gardening programs, conducting plant clinics, speaking to civic groups, and gardening programs for seniors. Once these 30 hours are registered, Master Gardener Trainees become Certified Master Gardeners.

Barton County Sheriff to Liberal area residents: Your electricity is not getting turned off

The Barton County Sheriff's Office have been told about scam calls going on around the Liberal Missouri area. 

An alleged company called Sun Solar LLC have been calling citizens in the Liberal area saying that the electricity is being turned off due to non-payment. We have been told these scam calls have occurred in areas around us. 

Do not provide any information to these scammers. Your electricity is not getting turned off.

Area schools to compete at History Day March 6

The Social Sciences Department at Missouri Southern State University will host the annual Region 6 History Day on Friday, March 6.

The theme for the 2020 event is “Breaking Barriers in History.”

The opening ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m., and will conclude with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m. Both events will take place in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

The public is invited to view exhibits at 9 a.m. in Connor Ballroom on the third floor of Billingsly Student Center. Other events will be offered throughout the day on the second floor of Webster Hall.

More than 267 entries from 376 students have been received for this year’s event from students in area high schools, junior highs and middle schools. Students are entered as individuals or groups to present their research. Those entries include papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries. Students in grades six through eight will compete in the Junior Division; grades nine through 12 will be in the Senior Division.

Participating schools include Carthage High School, Carthage Junior High School, College Heights Christian Schools, East Middle School, Joplin High School, McAuley High School, North Middle School, Neosho High School, Neosho Christian Schools, Neosho Junior High School, Neosho Middle School, Nevada Middle School, South Middle School, Seneca High School, Seneca Junior High School, Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, Webb City High School, Webb City Junior High School, Wheaton High School, White Rock Elementary School, and area home schools.

Winners from the contest will have the opportunity to compete in the National History Day competition on April 25 at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Route 215 north of Dadeville to close for pipe replacement work

What: Missouri Route 215 CLOSED between Missouri Route 245 and Dade County Route Y north of Dadeville

When: 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday, March 5-6, and Monday-Tuesday, March 9-10. Road open at night and over weekend.

Details: MoDOT crews replacing deteriorating drain pipes underneath the road

Traffic Impacts:

-Route 215 CLOSED only where crews are set up working

-Drivers will be able to get to driveways and entrances on either side of the work zones, but will not be able to travel through the work zones

-Drivers urged to find alternate routes. No signed detours are planned.

-Electronic message boards located near the planned road work will alert drivers to any changes in the work schedule

Anderson man injured in crash on 76

An Anderson man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 6:30 a.m. Wednesday on MO 76, just west of Anderson.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1986 Ford F-150 driven by Timothy L. Coble, 28, Anderson, left the road, struck a fence and a tree.

Coble was treated for minor injuries at Freeman Neosho.

An Anderson man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 7:15 a.m. today on I-49, 50 feet west of Neosho.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Ford Ranger driven by Daniel E. Carver, 56, Anderson, lost control on an icy bridge, traveled off the roadway and overturned down a steep embankment.

Carver was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Missouri Southern Jazz Collective concert to feature special guests

The Missouri Southern State University Jazz Collective is set to perform an evening of jazz standards at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

The concert will feature vocalist Emma Miller on songs such as “Georgia,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Here’s That Rainy Day,” “Dream a Little Dream” and others. The featured guest soloist is MSSU alum Robert Terry.

Terry – who will join the Jazz Collective and perform solo works – is an accomplished guitarist who currently teaches guitar at Evangel University in Springfield and performs at the “Shoji Tabuchi Show” in Branson. He’s performed with artists such as Jimmy Osmond, David Osmond and the Lennon Sisters, as well as The Voices of Glory and Janice Martin from “America’s Got Talent.”

The concert will also feature the debut performance of the Southern JazzBones. The trombone quartet performs jazz and popular tunes.

Both groups are under the direction of Dr. Phillip Wise. Admission is free and open to the public.

McDonald County Sheriff searching for violent suspect in connection with camper trailer theft

McDonald County Sheriff's Office is asking for public's assistance in locating person of interest in theft of camper trailer.

Tuesday, February 25th 2020, McDonald County Sheriff's Office recovered a camper trailer that was stolen from the Grove Oklahoma area.

Person of interest is going to be Eric Don Foster. Mr. Foster was last seen in the area of Bachman Road and Bunch Road intersection, where the stolen camper was located and recovered.

Foster is known to be violent. If located, do not approach or attempt to detain.

Anyone with information on Mr. Foster's whereabouts is asked to please contact the McDonald County Sheriff's Office dispatch at 417-223-4318, or your local law enforcement agency.
