Crowder College, Southwest Baptist sign agreement for transfer opportunities

(From Crowder College)

Crowder College and Southwest Baptist University finalized an articulation agreement on Thursday, May 28, which will allow students to seamlessly transfer from Crowder into SBU’s bachelor degree programs.

“Crowder College strives to expand partnerships and opportunities for all of our students to continue their academic journey beyond graduation,” said Keith Zoromski, associate vice president of academic affairs at Crowder College.

“This articulation agreement serves as evidence that Crowder College values coordinating with each of its university partners to mutually support its students.”

The partnership also allows SBU the opportunity to engage students currently enrolled at the Neosho, Mo.-based community college, who are wanting to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a liberal arts Christian university.

“We are excited to partner with Crowder College in providing an avenue for students to earn their bachelor’s degree at SBU,” said Dr. Lee Skinkle, provost of SBU. “This agreement helps make that transition for students an easy one as they join the Bearcat family.”

This agreement will impact students pursuing an Associate of Arts degree at Crowder. The A.A. often is referred to as a “transfer degree” because it is designed for students who plan to continue their education beyond the associate degree level.

MSSU schedules virtual celebration for graduates

(From Southern News Service)

Virtual celebrations honoring the Spring and Summer 2020 graduating class of Missouri Southern State University will be presented on the video board at Fred G. Hughes Stadium on Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30.

Four videos – each representing the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education and College of Health Sciences – will contain submitted images of graduates and run on a loop from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The video board can be viewed from a number of vantage points in the stadium parking lots.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional in-person ceremonies were postponed. Commencement ceremonies honoring all 2020 graduates are planned for December.

“It was a collaboration between several departments that wanted to be sure we continue to celebrate our students for reaching this important milestone,” said Heather Lesmeister, director of University Relations & Marketing at Missouri Southern. “We hope to have as many as possible return in December to walk across the stage and share the special moment with friends and family.”

The videos and more commencement information can be found at https://www.mssu.edu/student-affairs/registrar/commencement-ceremony.php.

Stormwater construction to cause closure of portion of Florida Avenue

(From the City of Joplin)

Stormwater construction just north of the intersection of Florida Avenue and Newman Road will cause a closure on Florida Avenue between Manitou Street and Newman Road.

Work begins on Monday, June 8 and is expected to continue for approximately two weeks. Traffic will be detoured during this time.

The project will improve the movement of stormwater moving through the area and reduce flooding possibilities of roadways and properties after rain events.

Work includes installation of concrete inlets for efficient water flow under and near Florida Avenue. Drivers may want to choose alternative routes due to possible delays.

B3 Contractors LLC is completing this stormwater improvement project. It is funded through the Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax, which voters renewed in 2011.

For questions, please contact Public Works at 417-624-0820, ext. 530.
