Joplin Police missing person investigation leads to discovery of body

On March 30th, 2022, the Joplin Police Department received a report of a missing person and initiated an investigation. 

On the afternoon of March 31st, 2022 the missing person was located deceased at a residence at 2201 S. Jackson Avenue in Joplin. 

Detectives with the Joplin Police Department are actively conducting a death investigation. 

At this time, no information regarding the identity of the victim is being release until next of kin notifications are made. Detectives are actively looking to speak with a person of interest in the matter. No information on that person is being released at this time. No comment is being made on the cause of the death. 

The Joplin Police Department asks if anyone has any information regarding this incident to please contact the Joplin Police Department at 417-623-3131. Further details will be released as the investigation progresses and information develops.

Neosho City-Wide Garage Sale scheduled for this weekend

This Friday and Saturday, April 1/2, our community will be transformed into a treasure haven. For those who love garage sales, the Annual Neosho City-Wide Garage Sale, which is coined as Missouri’s Largest Garage Sale is the best event of the year. 

It’s the granddaddy of all citywide garage sales. It has earned the title of Missouri’s Largest because thousands of people flock to Neosho each year in search of hidden treasures. So many people, in fact, that the size of our town is nearly doubled. 

 According to the Chamber, only about 20% of the crowd is local. That means that around 80% are tourists who spend money locally on food, gas, and many times, lodging. This week the Chamber has already seen guests coming in looking for maps from as far away as Texas and Kentucky. The business community is impacted again when residents spend the money they make locally.

Around 350-400 garage sales are expected to be held. This two-day event starts bright and early at 7:00 a.m. each day and will be held rain or shine. A change that will impact traffic is that Oak Ridge Drive, from Hill Street south to West Daugherty Road will be designated as one-way traffic during the event. 

 Event coordinators depend greatly on the cooperation of all participants to ensure the safety of everyone. We just ask everyone to be patient and courteous while traveling from point A to point B. 

This might be the only vision of our town that the visitors coming in will see. It is exciting to be the host of so many treasure hunters and definitely want to put our best foot forward.

MSSU Masterworks series to present Handel's Messiah

Missouri Southern State University’s Choral/Orchestral Masterwork Series will feature Handel’s “Messiah” in a performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Central Christian Center, 410 S. Virginia Avenue.

The performance will feature the Southern Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Dr. David Sharlow, and the Southern Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Canes Nicolas.

Sharlow, who also serves as chair of Missouri Southern’s Music Department, said the performance of “Messiah” is in celebration of the choral group’s 10th anniversary.

 

“We performed it when we started the Southern Symphonic Chorus back in 2012,” he said. “We wanted to perform it again in celebration of our 10 years, and it’s a chance to feature the new instruments which were recently donated.”

A Klop continuo organ and a Herz double manual harpsichord were recently donated to the department by Jim Dawson, Gary Dawson and their family.

“(‘Messiah’) is a wonderful piece that features orchestra and choir,” Sharlow said. “It’s one that probably everyone is familiar with. Easter is coming up, and it tells the story of Christ straight from the Bible.”

Glenda Austin, a longtime music educator and composer, will serve as accompanist/harpsichordist. Peter Frost, organist and choir master at Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage, will be featured on organ.

The performers will be joined by the Joplin-Area Community Singers as well as four guest soloists.

Madison King (soprano) is an adjunct vocal instructor at MSSU. She was a member of the Tulsa Opera chorus from 2015-18 and has participated in summer programs by the Manhattan Summer Opera, Chicago Summer Opera and the Midwest Institute of Opera. A Carthage resident, she also teaches at a private voice studio.

Kristee Haney (alto) recently joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for two productions. She has toured with the New York City Opera and recently released her first solo album, “Echos.”

Brian Stranghoner (tenor) is in his second year as assistant professor of music education and voice at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan., following a 30-year career teaching in Kansas public schools. He has maintained an active solo career in opera and oratorio, with performances at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center and many others.

Dr. Robert McNichols Jr. (bass/baritone) serves as manager of education programs for Musical Theater Heritage in Kansas City, and previously taught as an associate professor at Harris-Stowe State University. He is a graduate of Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s apprentice program and is a versatile performer and soloist.

The program will include a 20-minute intermission. Admission is free and open to the public.

Masked gunman robs Eagle Stop store on Rangeline

On March 28th, 2022 at 10:07 pm the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call of an armed robbery at the Eagle Stop convenience store at 3504 S. Rangeline Road. 

The caller reported a suspect entered the store, displayed a handgun, demanded money from the register, and fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. 

Officers with the Joplin Police Department responded to the area and attempted a K9 track, however the suspect was not located. 

The suspect is described as a black male, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, tennis shoes and had a mask on his face. He was last seen fleeing south from the store. No employees were physically injured during the incident.

Noel man killed in crash on 90

A Noel man was killed in a one-vehicle accident 7:35 p.m. Monday on MO 90, two miles east of Southwest City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1994 Honda Civic driven by Pedro E. Maldonado-Carillo ran off the roadway and overturned.

McDonald County Coroner B. J. Goodwin pronounced Maldonado-Carillo dead at the scene.

The fatality was the 19th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Four people injured, including 1-year-old, 2-year-old in rollover accident near Lamar

Four people were injured in a one-vehicle accident 2:25 p.m. today on NW 1st Lane, three miles north of Lamar.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Lexus driven by Hannah M. Garren, 20, Sheldon, traveled off the left side of the road and overturned.

Garren and three passengers, William R. Howard, 25, Nevada, a 1-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, both of Sheldon, were treated for minor injuries at Cox Barton County Hospital, Lamar.

MSSU Honors Lecture Series to present "Stoker on Stoker"

Dacre Stoker, the great-grandnephew of “Dracula” author Bram Stoker, will be this year’s featured speaker for the Honors Lecture Series at Missouri Southern State University.

He will offer a multi-media presentation entitled “Stoker on Stoker: The Mysteries Behind the Writing of ‘Dracula’” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Dacre Stoker is the international best-selling co-author of “Dracula the Un-Dead,” the 2009 official Stoker family endorsed sequel to “Dracula.” He served as the co-editor of 2012’s “The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker: The Dublin Years,” and in 2018 co-authored the “Dracula” prequel “Dracul,” which was a top 5 finalist by the Horror Writers Association for the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Novel.

He has consulted and appeared in film documentaries about vampires in literature and popular culture, and hosts tours to places where Bram Stoker lived and worked as well as to Transylvania, the setting for the classic novel.

“Stoker on Stoker” will explore the history of “Dracula” along with Stoker family lore and separate fact from fiction and explore the issues that have baffled scholars and fans since the book’s publication in 1897. It will include Dacre’s collection of never-before published and seldom seen historic images to offer a glimpse behind the scenes of one of the least-known authors and one of the world’s most famous books.

“As a fan of ‘Dracula,’ and of Gothic literature in general, I am thrilled to welcome Dacre Stoker to the MSSU campus for what will certainly be a fun and informative presentation on a classic novel that has become such an important part of our popular culture,” said Dr. Michael Howarth, director of the Honors Program.

“I look forward to learning more about Bram Stoker’s life, as well as about Dacre Stoker’s own creative journey through his numerous publications and family research.”

Since 2015, the Honors Lecture Series has brought esteemed speakers to the Missouri Southern campus. Previous speakers have included David Moritz (CEO of Society Awards); author Andrew Geyer; physicist Alan Lightman; and author Victoria Price, daughter of legendary actor Vincent Price.

Carl Junction woman injured as car goes airborne, lands on top of fence

A Carl Junction woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 9:35 a.m. Sunday on Ivy Road, three miles north of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, 2004 Kia Sorento driven by Theresa L. Carver, 66, Carl Junction, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a culvert, became airborne, struck a gate and landed on top of a fence.

Carver was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin. 

Joplin teen injured in crash on old 71

A Joplin woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 10:52 p.m. Sunday on Old Highway 71, two miles south of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Toyota Prius driven by Giovanna A. Jourdan, 18, Joplin, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a railroad bridge.

Jourdan was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

 

Carl Junction, Pittsburg residents injured in accident on 126

Two people were injured in a one-vehicle collision 8:05 a.m. today on MO 126, nine miles northwest of Jasper.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2020 Freightliner Crane driven by Mark Newman, 38, Carl Junction, ran off the rodway and overturned.

Newman and a passenger, Michael Pedroza, 38, Pittsburg, Kansas, were treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Three dead, including 2-year-old, following double-murder suicide in Baxter Springs

At approximately 7:14 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022, Baxter Springs Police Officers were dispatched to 340 Wyandotte Avenue in Baxter Springs.

The female caller told dispatch she needed help. Upon the arrival of officers, the woman exited the home and a male suspect, identified as 37-year-old Eli Crawford, shot and killed 27-year-old Taylor Dawn Shutte.

The suspect then retreated back inside with their 2-year-old child, Cessie Crawford.

At that point law enforcement personnel with the Baxter Springs Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office began taking fire from the suspect.

As the suspect continued to shoot at law enforcement, additional assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Joplin SWAT Team was requested.

During the nearly 3 and a half hour assault on law enforcement, an officer was able to return fire towards the suspect.

When officers approached the residence, Crawford and the child were deceased inside.

Per standard agency protocol, the law enforcement officer who engaged the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The investigation is ongoing and is being led by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

City of Joplin seeking public input on solid waste master plan

The City of Joplin invites residents to participate in a discussion about trash, recycling, and yard waste services in our community. We are in the initial stages of developing a Solid Waste Master Plan (SWMP), and our residents’ involvement in this process is essential to its success. Citizen input will inform future City services related to trash, recycling, and yard waste.

Please join us Wednesday, April 6 at Joplin City Hall to participate in the City’s first round of Solid Waste Informational Open Houses. These events will run from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the fifth floor. Residents are welcome to join at any point during either session as both sessions will present the same information.

The City of Joplin aims to optimize existing solid waste systems and facilities, evaluate potential additional or improved service offerings, and develop measurable goals for diversion in accordance with Missouri Solid Waste Management Law, Section 260.250. The SWMP will establish priorities and an implementation plan to achieve diversion goals, improve customer satisfaction with solid waste services, provided, and plan for necessary infrastructure for the next 20 years.

Subject has not been located at this time. We do believe based on information that we have received he is no longer in the area.

 
Other area law enforcement agencies have been made aware of the incident and will be looking for him as well.

 
If you see him, please contact your local law enforcement agency. Do not try and apprehend him as he may still be armed.
