Golf carts, equipment stolen from Neosho Golf Course

On 10-13-23, the Neosho Police Department responded to the Neosho Municipal Golf Course in reference to a burglary.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that several pieces of equipment had been stolen from the property, including golf carts.

The Neosho Police are asking for the public's assistance in information that may lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of those involved.

Evidence indicates the theft occurred on the morning of 10-13-23 and a golf cart was driven from the scene.

If any of the public was in the area surrounding the Neosho Golf Course on the morning of 10-13-23, and observed a larger vehicle possibly pulling a trailer, please contact the Neosho Police Department. 

All information provided will remain confidential.

Two injured as car hits deer, overturns in rural Jasper County

Just after 11:30 p.m. last night we were dispatched to an injury crash with entrapment at Thorn Road and CR 90. 

A car had struck a deer and overturned. 

One patient was trapped with serious injuries and a second was out of the vehicle with minor injuries.

 Jasper FPD responded with 2 units and 5 personnel. Extricated the patient in 13 minutes of arrival and turned over patient care to Mercy EMS. after their arrival. Units cleared just before 1am.

(Editor's note: According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Buick Verano driven by Gage M. Blevins, 20, Forsyth, struck a deer, ran off the roadway and overturned. Blevins was treated for minor injuries and a passenger, Paul Walker, 18, Rogersville, for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin.

Webb City Police Department raising funds for Shop with a Cop

The Webb City Police Department is proud to share with you, that we are raising funds for our 27th annual ‘Shop with a Cop’ event. 

This entire event is made possible through of the generosity of people in the community. Without the donations, this project would not exist. 

Local businesses in Webb City have partnered with us and are selling the ‘Shop with a Cop’ badges for $1.00 donations for this program. One hundred percent of the collected funds go directly to children and their families.

As you are well aware, this program helps to provide Christmas for some very deserving children in the Webb City school system.

 
This year’s event is scheduled for a Saturday morning in December when 75 law-enforcement officers will shop with 75 children at our Webb City Wal-Mart. Each child will be given $100.00 to spend on Christmas gifts, for themselves and other family members. 

The selected families will also receive a food basket of items donated by various businesses and vendors who also have partnered with us. The officers have almost as much fun as the kids, and every year Santa Claus arrives early to help us out and there are always lots of hugs and even some tears of gratitude.

Grove Middle School evacuated, roads blocked off following bomb threat

Around 10:30am on October 31, 2023, Grove Public Schools made the Grove Police Department aware of a threat they had received that a pipe bomb had been placed somewhere in the Grove Middle School. 

The school administration ordered an evacuation at the Middle School and the roads around the schools were blocked off. A request was made by the Grove Police Department to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Squad to respond to the Grove Middle School. The Middle School was secured until the Bomb Squad could arrive, coming from Tulsa. 

Simultaneously, Investigators with the Grove Police Department began investigating the origin of the threat. Within a short time developed a person of interest (name withheld due to being a juvenile) and after a brief foot pursuit the person of interest was arrested. 

OHP’s Bomb Squad arrived on scene at the Middle School and conducted a search of the school with bomb sniffing K-9s. It was determined there was no device inside the school. The school was deemed clear and school was resumed. 

We would like to thank our partner agencies who responded, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Jay Police Department, Agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Squad, Grove Fire Department, and Grove Emergency Management.

 
The Grove Police Department enjoys a great relationship with the Grove Public School System, which makes managing these difficult situations safer for the students and the public.

Parsons sex offender arrested for non-compliance on Halloween

On October 31, 2023, Parsons Registered Offender Program (PROP) arrested Johnny Leon Baker for violations of the Kansas Offender Registration Act. 

Information came into the department about possible violations by Baker at the end of August 2023. An investigation was initiated by PROP into the allegations.

 
Baker is required to register as a Lifetime Sex Offender from a 2014 conviction for Aggravated Indecent Liberties with Child. According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s Public Offender Registry website, Baker’s victim was a five (5) year old female.

 
Through the investigation, Baker was found to be in violation of multiple requirements for Registered Sex Offenders. Baker had failed to register his enrollment at Labette Community College, which sits directly north of Garfield Elementary School. Baker failed to annually renew his Kansas Identification Card in September of 2023, as he is required to do. Baker also failed to register quarterly in September as required, per his quarterly registration schedule.

 
Charges are being forwarded to the Labette County Attorney's Office for seven (7) counts of Violation of Offender Registration.

This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It." All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Highway Patrol announces promotions

Captain D. Scott Sater, commanding officer of Troop D, Springfield, is pleased to announce the following promotions effective November 1, 2023.

Corporal Eric I. Mueller will be promoted to the rank of sergeant and will remain in Zone 1, Greene County, as the zone supervisor. Mueller was appointed to the Missouri State Water Patrol on January 4, 2004, as a member of the 32nd Water Patrol Recruit Class. 

After graduating, he was assigned to Lake of the Ozarks. Mueller became a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol on January 1, 2011, after the two agencies merged. He transferred to Zone 10, serving Webster County on September 1, 2012. Mueller was promoted to the rank of corporal on April 1, 2018, and designated assistant zone supervisor in Zone 10, serving Webster County. In September 2020, he transferred to Zone 1, serving Greene County.

Sergeant Mueller is a native of Branson, Missouri, where he graduated high school in 1999. He earned a bachelor's degree at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, in 2003. Sergeant Mueller is married to Ashley Mueller and together they have two children, Avery and Emery.

Corporal Robert R. Wilkins will be promoted to the rank of sergeant and will remain in Troop D, Zone 21, marine operations. Wilkins was appointed to the Patrol on July 1, 1994, as a member of the 67th Recruit Class. After graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, Wilkins was assigned to Zone 5, serving Jasper County until 1998. He then transferred to Zone 9, where he served Christian County. Wilkins transferred to Zone 21, marine operations, in 2016. He was promoted to the rank of corporal on August 1, 2019.

Sergeant Wilkins is a native of Branson, Missouri. He graduated from Branson High School in 1989. Sergeant Wilkins is married to Trina Wilkins and together they have four children, Hope, Donavan, Trey, and Zella.

Bob Foos inducted into Webb City Athletic Hall of Fame

This year, Mr. Bob Foos was inducted into the WC Athletic Hall of Fame as a meritorious recipient. He has spent decades faithfully taking photos and writing stories about Webb City's athletic program. 

For 41 years, Mr. Foos has been the editor of the Webb City Sentinel both when it was in print and online. 

He has also been inducted into the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame, the Regional Media Hall of Fame and named an R-7 Foundation Distinguished Citizen.

Search warrant execution leads to arrest of Parsons woman, confiscation of meth, fentanyl

On Friday, October 27, 2023, the Labette Co. Sheriff’s Office executed three search warrants in Parsons Ks. with the assistance of the Parsons Police Department and the Kansas Department of Revenue. 

During the searches of 2501 Washington, 1538, 25th St. & 2911 Main St., officers from the above listed agencies located and seized 8.7 pounds of suspected marijuana, 4 ounces of suspected methamphetamines, and 2 grams of suspected Fentanyl, along with over $18,670 in cash.

 
During the search warrant, Dorian L Allen was arrested. Other arrests will follow.

Neosho woman injured in accident on I-49

A Neosho woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 9:45 a.m. today on I-49 five miles south of Nevada.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2017 Chevrolet Trax driven by Caylin R. Tice, 25, Neosho, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Tice was treated for minor injuries at Nevada Regional Medical Center.

 

Stella, Noel teens injured crashing into tree

Two people were injured in a one-vehicle accident 4 p.m. today on MO 76, seven miles east of Anderson.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2021 Kia Soul driven by a 16-year-old Stella girl traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.

The girl and a passenger, a 16-year-old Noel boy, were treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Bella Vista, Arkansas.

 

Three injured in collision on I-44 west of Joplin

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision 5:59 p.m. today on I-44 one mile west of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Magen M. Russell, 42, Springfield, struck a 2003 Toyota Camry driven by Michael R. Huffaker, 32, Joplin, in the rear.

Russell was treated for minor injuries and two passengers in her vehicle,  Jessica D. Justus, 46, Springfield, and Curtis E. Goodwin, 37, Aldrich, for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin.

Parsons Police Department arrests non-compliant sex offender

On October 10, 2023, Parsons Registered Offender Program became aware of a non-compliant, Sex Offender residing in the 2100 block of Crawford Ave. 

An investigation was started to look into the violations. Gladys Dell Correll, 51 years old of Parsons, was found to be non-compliant for multiple violations of Kansas Offender Registration laws.

 
Correll must register as a sex offender due to a 1996 conviction in Labette County for Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child; Lewd Fondling/Touching, that occurred in 1995. According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s Public Offender Registry website, Correll’s victim was a three (3) year old female.

 
On October 25, 2023, after the investigation was complete, Parsons Police Officers located Correll at her residence and placed her under arrest. Charges have been forwarded to the Labette County Attorney’s Office for review of formal charges for eight counts of Aggravated Violation of Offender Registration and five counts of Violation of Offender Registration. 

A $10,000 dollar bond was set by a District Court Judge and Correll remains in custody at the Labette County Jail.

Online threats and safety information topic on next Newsmakers program

Technology is ever evolving, and with advances also come threats to personal data, financial information and even our children’s safety from predators and human traffickers. Members of the community can learn about safeguards at the upcoming Joplin Regional Innovation & Technology Summit, November 2-3. Coordinators of the summit share details about sessions being offered and keynote speakers on Newsmakers.

The summit launches at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 2, with a special public event titled “Helping Our Children Thrive on the Internet” with national speaker Shane McCombs. That’s being held at the Joplin High School Performing Arts Center. 

Doug Hunt, Director of Entrepreneurship with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce and Jason Rincker with Stronghold Data, discuss the issues being addressed in sessions being held Friday such as AI, Robotics, Drones, Cyber Resiliency and more. Guest speakers include the Missouri Attorney General and Missouri Secretary of State among other experts in technology and business.

This Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 and 9 p.m. the week of October 29 on KGCS-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University. On Saturday, a special edition Newsmakers about the Lion’s Forward campaign will air at 5:30 a.m. on KOAM-TV.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
