Two-year-old flown to KC in critical condition, Joplin man arrested on child abuse charge

On May 31st, 2020 at approximately 9:32 A.M. Officers with the Joplin Police Department were dispatched to the 1900 block of east 8th St. for a 2-year-old male child not conscious and not breathing.

Responding officers started life saving measures upon arrival. The child was transported to a local hospital where he was later transported to Kansas City, MO for treatment. 

Through the investigation Brian Ogrodnick (22) of Joplin, MO was arrested for Abuse of a Child. 

The juvenile child is being treated in Kansas City, MO and is listed in critical condition.

Death of Neosho man found beneath pile of debris labeled a homicide

On Saturday 05-30-20 the Newton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Neosho address in reference to a deceased person.

Deputies responded to 15726 Finch Drive at 1:36PM. A neighbor had located a body partially hidden beneath a pile of debris on the property.

The victim has been identified as Robert L. Bryant, of that address. He is a white male, 55 years of age.

Family members said he had not been seen since the previous Sunday but that he had not been reported missing yet.

This is being investigated as a homicide. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week. Newton County Detectives obtained a search warrant for the victim’s property and processed the scene. They have collected evidence and are now conducting interviews.

The investigation is continuing at this time. We encourage anyone having information on this incident to contact the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

KGCS to air Phillips File this summer

Stories from the archives - featuring late Hall of Fame journalist Robert S. “Bob” Phillips - are set to hit the KGCS-TV airwaves this summer.

Episodes of the “Phillips File” begin airing in June, and feature the veteran newsman’s stories which highlighted the unique people and places throughout the Four State area.

Phillips had a long career in Joplin television, and his stories included looks at everything from classic cars to unique collections and tourist sites across the region. KGCS received the tape archives of his stories from his estate following his passing in 2010. Since then, some of the stories have been edited into half-hour feature programs.

Phillips was honored by Missouri Southern State University in 2006, with his induction into the Regional Media Hall of Fame. His broadcast career dated back to the 1940s, and his work at KODE-TV in Joplin started in the 1960s and lasted until 1999.

“We are glad to be able to share these stories with area viewers,” said Judy Stiles, KGCS general manager. “They present many people and sights that local television viewers may recall. Bill Hunt (KGCS creative services director) worked with Phillips and has crafted these stories into special historical looks at the past.”

The shows will air weeknights on KGCS-TV – and are currently posted on the station’s YouTube channel, “KGCS Missouri Southern.”



KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21. It is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.

Golden City woman injured in two-vehicle collision

A Golden City woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident 7:10 p.m. Sunday on Pine Street at High Street in Golden City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2010 Ford Taurus driven by Olivia G. Willis, 18, Golden City, failed to yield to a 2016 GMC Terrain driven by Crystal A. Brunner, 35, Golden City, and struck the Brunner vehicle in the side.

Brunner was treated for minor injuries at Cox Barton County Hospital, Lamar.
