Community nursing blood drive set at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

The Nursing Department at Missouri Southern State University, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will host a Community Nursing Blood Drive on Thursday, Feb. 6.

The event, part of this semester’s community nursing class, is free and open to the public, and will take place from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. inside Connor Ballroom on the third floor of Billingsly Student Center.

“This not only helps members of our community, it also helps our students,” said Peyton Kessler, clinical nursing instructor at MSSU. “They organize this from beginning to end, so it really gives them the insight on how it’s all put together, not to mention the healthcare benefits.”

This will be the first of two blood drives organized by MSSU nursing students during the Spring 2020 semester. Another one is tentatively scheduled to take place in April.

Those interested are asked to register. They can do so by emailing Kessler at Kessler-p@mssu.edu. They can also contact the American Red Cross at (800) 733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org and enter the code: MSSJP.

Missouri experiences significant decrease in traffic deaths in 2019

(From the Missouri State Highway Patrol)

Preliminary statistics indicate Missouri experienced a 4.9 percent decrease in traffic crash fatalities compared to the previous year. In 2019, there were 876 people killed in traffic crashes compared to 921 people killed in 2018.

“Enforcement, education, and engineering help make our roadways safer,” said Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

“Traffic safety is a major focus of every trooper and I’m proud of the work they do. I also recognize how important it is that drivers make good decisions while operating a vehicle. Please continue to be courteous, obey all traffic laws, use your seat belt, and drive sober.”

“We are very pleased with the reduction of fatal traffic crashes,” said Col. Olson. “We are committed to working with our traffic safety partners and Missouri’s drivers to further reduce the number of traffic deaths in our state.”

The Patrol’s recently released a traffic safety video entitled, ‘If I Could Just Go Back,” helps educate the public about the importance of paying attention while driving, obeying traffic laws, wearing a seat belt, and driving sober. Motorists are reminded to do their part and to make good choices when they are behind the wheel. Public information officers at each troop headquarters are available to schools, civic organizations, and churches to present a safety program which includes the video.

Traffic crashes cannot be undone. Make good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go back …”

Missourians can help further make the roads safe by reporting dangerous drivers to the Patrol’s Emergency Report Line at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

(From Connect2Culture)

Voctave will perform “The Corner of Broadway and Main Street” in Joplin on Sunday, February 2, 7:30pm at Joplin High School Performing Arts Center (2104 Indiana Avenue, Joplin, MO 64804). This is the third performance in Connect2Culture’s 2019-2020 Curtains Up Series.

With a success story like a fairytale, it seems fitting Voctave began at Disney World. All 11 members of this popular a cappella group got their start as Disney’s Voices of Liberty at Epcot Center.

In 2015, the group organized independently to create magical arrangements of classic Disney songs and popular Broadway hits.

By 2016, Voctave’s stunning musical adaptations had earned a well-deserved spot in the limelight. Their arrangements have featured award-winning singers from all genres, including Pentatonix’s Kirstin Maldonado. Today, Voctave’s videos have gone viral, receiving a staggering 100 million views on YouTube/Facebook. With currently four albums, the group continues to create and perform an ever-expanding range of sophisticated a capella music. From gospel to musical theater, contemporary Christian to barbershop, pop to choral specialists – Voctave voices have covered it all.

In addition to the performance, Connect2Culture has arranged a Voctave masterclass for Missouri Southern State University’s Chamber Singers. The masterclass will be held earlier in the day on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. The Chamber Singers will then open for Voctave with two songs they worked on during the masterclass.

Tickets: $25 Orchestra, $20 Mezzanine & Front Balcony, $15 Back Balcony. Discounted package tickets are available. Groups of 10+ receive a 20% discount. Tickets may be purchased at connect2culture.org, 417.501.5550, in-person at Joplin Empire Market on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 10:00am–3:00pm, or at the door.
