Spiva Gallery seekings RSVPs for art project

The Spiva Gallery at Missouri Southern State University will host a community art project in conjunction with an upcoming exhibition by Caribbean artist Nadia Huggins.

Participants in “Beyond the Boundary” – planned for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 12 – will explore themes of boundaries, limits and “breaking through” while creating a window mural within the Fine Arts Building.

The event will begin with a discussion of Huggins’ photography, led by Dr. Christine Bentley and Dr. Ambert Mintert, both associate professors of art at Missouri Southern. Participants will create a drawing of themselves demonstrating their interpretation of breaking boundaries.

The drawing will be incorporated into a pre-made mural of water imagery taken from Huggins’ photographs. It will then be installed onto windows in the Fine Art Building. The mural will be able to be viewed both inside and outside the building.

It’s planned in conjunction with “On an Island,” an exhibit of Huggins’ photography that will run Sept. 2-23 in the Spiva Gallery.

Her work merges documentary and conceptual practices to explore identity, memory and belonging through the landscape and the sea. She will offer a Skype lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium, which will be followed by a reception at noon in the gallery.

The exhibit will be on display from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, and again on Sept. 12 and 19.
