Global Leaders speaker, Japan Day among events on tap at Missouri Southern

Shawn Askinosie will be the next presenter in the new Global Leaders Speaker Series at Missouri Southern State University.

He will speak at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

In 2006, Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense attorney to start a bean-to-bar chocolate factory. His company, Askinosie Chocolate, was recently named by Forbes as “One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America.” He is a Family Brother at Assumption Abby, a Trappist monastery near Ava, Mo., and co-founder of Lost & Found, a grief center now in its 20th year of serving children and families in Southwest Missouri.

Other activities planned for the week of Oct. 18 include an internship expo for students and alumni, a pumpkin carving/painting event for freshmen, and Japan Day – a day of cultural activities that is open to the public.

Monday, Oct. 18

Pottery exhibition: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Spiva Gallery. The show features works by artist Hironobu “Nishi” Nishitateno, and will run through Oct. 22.

Tuesday, Oct. 19

Grocery Bingo: 12:20 p.m., Lions Den. Students can play for a chance to win a bag of groceries in this event sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.

Shawn Askinosie presentation: 1 p.m., Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

“Weathering with You”: 7 p.m., Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium. The 2019 Japanese film is about a high-school boy who runs away from his rural home to Tokyo, where he befriends an orphan girl who appears to be able to manipulate the weather. Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Oct. 20

“How to Get Started Investing”: 1 p.m., Hearnes Hall 307/311. The event is a special workshop for students in the Project Stay program.

Thursday, Oct. 21

Internship Expo: 10 a.m. t0 1:30 p.m., Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom. All students and alumni are invited to attend and connect with businesses and organizations recruiting students from all majors. Sponsored by Career Services.

Pumpkin carving/painting: 4:30 p.m., on the Oval. Freshmen are invited to participate in the event, which is sponsored by the First Year Experience program and ACTS.

Friday, Oct. 22

Artist Talk: 1 p.m., Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. Hironobu “Nishi” Nishitateno will discuss his work via Zoom.

Volleyball vs. Missouri Western: 6 p.m., Young Gymnasium. This is the team’s annual Pink Game, to raise funds for the Hope 4 You Breast Cancer Foundation.

Saturday, Oct. 23

Japan Day, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The event will offer a wide variety of interactive arts, games and cultural activities, and an opportunity to learn about many Japanese traditions.
