Sarcoxie Police weekly report includes phone charger thievery, speeding, underage drinking

(From the Sarcoxie Police Department)

1. Parents, if you have not talked with your kiddos about alcohol use and what can happen, please do. Kids, your bodies aren't designed to consume large amounts of alcohol; it can cause you to do things that you wouldn't normally do.

Things like unprotected sex could lead to sexually transmitted diseases and unexpected pregnancies. It depresses your central nervous system, which could cause you to urinate yourself. Not to mention the vomiting and dry heaves. Hangovers are not fun either.

You can get in trouble with the law - minor in possession, DWI, or a crash. You can get hurt fatally easier with alcohol in your system, whether by a crash or drowning. Just think smart.

2. When you get a new phone, you get a phone charger. You buy multiple chargers while having the phone; Ms. Lacy Jerrett thought she needed to steal one. You were identified, and expect a citation to your last known address. Please do make it to court.

3. We had three crashes this last week. Even though they were minor, we still need you to pay attention. We will not make a report if the crash occurs on private property; we will only make an informational report for your insurance purposes. Inattentive driving was the major contributing factor to these wrecks. Be careful folks, crashes are up, wear your seatbelts and be cautious.

4. If you are riding a motorized scooter/pocket bike, you have to have a valid driver's license. Insurance should be a given in case you crash. If the scooter/bike is over 49cc, it must be registered and insured. If you don't have any of that, you will be cited, and your vehicle towed.

5. Quite of few citations for driving 16 to 25 MPH over the posted speed limit have been written. When a vehicle is already doing 65 in a 55, you don't need to pass them while going 75 MPH. It catches the radar's attention and you a court citation. Slow down; getting somewhere is worth getting a citation., it'll make you later than you already were.

6. Weekly Numbers:
Accidents: 3
Community/School Checks: 24
Harassment: 1

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family from the La Russell fire. We want to commend the neighbor who picked the couple up and brought them back to her residence. Great bravery and compassion were shown by the neighbor.

MSSU Choral Society schedules annual holiday concert

(From the MSSU Choral Society)

The MSSU Choral Society's annual holiday concert will take place Sunday, December 12, 3:00 p.m., First Community Church, 2007 East 15th St, in Joplin, Mo.

This will be their first concert in over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the members are excited to sing again. It also will be the first concert for Melissa Belk, the Society’s new artistic director and conductor. She had taken the reins in the spring of 2020, but the rehearsals and concerts were canceled shortly thereafter, and this summer’s concert was also canceled at the last minute due to COVID-19. (Third time is charm?)

The well-known and ever-popular area-wide mixed choir will present a variety of holiday music including; White Christmas – a medley of Irving Berlin songs, “Glow” by Eric Whitacre, “Nutcracker Jingles” an unusual arrangement of Christmas songs, The First Noel/Pachibel’s Canon, arranged by Michael Clawson, and African Alleluia, by Benjamin Harlan. The Grinch is even expected to make an appearance. The concert will be capped by the chorus’s signature song, “One Song” by Marvin Hamlisch.

Clint Newby continues to accompany the Choral Society. .

The concert is open to the public at no charge.

Spiva exhibition features works by senior art majors

(From Southern News Service)

Works created by three senior art majors are spotlighted in the new exhibit, “Connections,” now on display in Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.

The senior exhibit is comprised of three individual shows.

Symone Hall, an art education major from Carthage, presents “Home Here, Home There.”

“Home is a place not only of comfort, but of control,” she said. “It is the place where I feel the most connected. Every image that I have created in this exhibition reminds me of my home, both here in Missouri and there in the Bahamas. Each (work) evokes a sense of belonging, national pride, nostalgia of the past and personal growth in the present.”

An art history major from Carthage, Susan Griffith’s oil and watercolor paintings are collected in “At the Auction.”

The works follow a man she met at an auction who she found to be an interesting subject – especially his hat.

“He was quite a character,” Griffith said.

Lillias Helt, a fine arts-studio major from Grove, Okla., has centered her exhibit around reflections over water and rocks. In “Honey Creek,” the reimagined landscapes depict the shoreline of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, her place of residence.

“I seek to challenge the viewer; force a closer introspection of each piece,” said Helt. “My art creates abstraction through realism; structured chaos.”

“Connections” will run through Friday, Dec. 3. A guest reception is planned for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the gallery. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
