First Thursday Art Walk planned in Downtown Joplin

Next phase of widening of 32nd Street to begin Thursday

(From the City of Joplin)

With the installation of a new concrete culvert at 32nd Street and Crane drive completed, the 32nd Street widening project is now moving on to the next phase of construction.

Starting Thursday, September 1 the road closure on 32nd St. will be extended from Crane Drive to the west side of Iron Gates Road / Arbor Road.

This will include the closure of the intersection of Day Road and 32nd Street. This is the third closure of multiple closures occurring consecutively on different sections of 32nd Street. Detour routes are posted and access to local properties will be maintained at all times.

The contractor for the 32nd Street widening project is Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc. This improvement will widen 32nd Street, from Schifferdecker Avenue west to Central City Road. The design includes adding a center lane and constructing a sidewalk-shared use path. The $8 million project is funded through the 3/8 cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax approved by voters in 2014.

For questions or comments, please contact Rob Beachner, Capital Improvement Projects Manager, at 417-624-0820, ext. 1543, or via email at rbeachne@joplinmo.org.

Kalbaugh family selected as Jasper County Farm Family

(From University of Missouri Extension)

Kyler & Sydney Kalbaugh and family of Jasper were among the families honored during the 64th annual Missouri Farm Family Day, Aug. 15 at the Missouri State Fair.

The Kalbaugh family was selected as the Jasper County Missouri Farm Family by University of Missouri Extension in Jasper County and the local Farm Bureau. The family includes Kinzey Kalbaugh.

Each year, the fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state that are active in their communities, involved in agriculture, and/or participate in local outreach and extension programs such as 4-H or FFA.

The Kalbaugh family operates a 300-acre row crop and beef operation.

The annual event is sponsored by five partner agencies: the Missouri Farm Bureau; the Missouri Department of Agriculture; the Missouri State Fair Commissioners; the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; and MU Extension.

The event showcases the impact that Missouri farm families have on the economy and heritage of the state, said Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe. “These families are involved in agriculture activities in their communities and are active participants in local outreach and extension. As the premier showcase for Missouri agriculture, the Missouri State Fair is most certainly the appropriate place to celebrate these families.”

Carthage Fire Department plans annual Fill the Boot Drive to support MDA

(From the Carthage Fire Department)

Fire fighters have collected critical funds in the community since 1954 – one dollar at a time – as part of the Fill the Boot program for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The Carthage Fire Department will be continuing this long-standing tradition as its members kick off their annual collection raising funds to support MDA’s vision to accelerate research, advance care, and advocate for the support of MDA families.

Dedicated fire fighters from the Carthage Fire Department will be out with boots in hand at the entryway of the Walmart parking area from 12pm to 5pm September 2nd through September 4th.

Fire fighters have been raising funds for MDA since 1954. To date, the Fill the Boot program has raised more than $679 million with involvement from over 300,000 fire fighters nationwide. These funds have led in part to over a dozen FDA-approved drugs in as many years for those with neuromuscular disease. Those treatments were created from MDA’s vision to open a new field of medicine and push the boundaries of the medical frontier we call genetic medicine.

27th annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition set in Neosho

(From Neosho Arts Council)

The 27th Annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition is now on display through October at Neosho Arts Council’s Big Spring Gallery (inside the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce) in downtown Neosho, MO.

“We have a great selection of art this year,” said Sarah Serio, president of Neosho Arts Council. “There is art by full time professional artists and by people who’ve only just picked up painting recently.”

That ability to exhibit a range of skill levels is one of this exhibitions founding goals. While the annual event honors the artistic contribution of Neosho’s native son, Thomas Hart Benton, it’s also an opportunity for all area artists to compete in a professional environment.

“The two division’s give students and new artists an opportunity to get their feet wet in competition without going up against someone who’s experienced in the field,” Serio explained. Artists from across Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas are taking part in this year’s exhibition which features oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and works on paper.

“The focus of the Thomas Hart Benton show has always been on traditional 2D mediums,” Serio explained. “These are some of the mediums that Benton himself worked in.”

Kimi Kitada, a curator and arts educator based in Kansas City, MO, will serve as this year’s judge. On September 22 the public is invited to join the artists for an award and critique presentation.

“During the awards our judge will also be giving a brief critique of each winner, which is a unique part of our competition,” Serio said. “This is a great opportunity for new artists to learn what makes a piece of art a winner.”

The awards presentation and critiques will be held at the Community Room of the Neosho/Newton County Library (201 West Spring Street, Neosho, MO).

A public reception and viewing of the exhibition will follow. Kitada will be on hand to discuss works one-on-one with attendees.

The exhibition will be on view at the Big Spring Gallery inside the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce (216 West Spring St., Neosho, MO) during September and October. It will also be on view through the Virtual Big Spring Gallery at neoshoarts.net. You can learn more by following Neosho Arts Council on Facebook and Instagram or visiting their website

Contemporary ceramics exhibit planned at Crowder College Longwell Museum

(From Crowder College)

The Artaxis Invitational exhibition at Crowder College’s Longwell Museum will run September 1-October 20, 2022.

The exhibit features work from 22 internationally renowned ceramic artists who push the limits of contemporary art and craft. Artaxis is an artist-run organization with nearly 1000 members from all 50 states and over 50 countries worldwide.

Additionally, four exhibiting artists will host a free, open-to-the-public panel talk October 20 from 2:30pm-5pm (prior to the closing reception) in the Elsie Plaster auditorium.

The speakers are exhibiting artists and current board members: Casey Whittier, Renata Cassiano Alvarez, Natasha Hovey, and Kwok Pong (Bobby) Tso. Panelists will discuss Artaxis’s mission and goals as a peer-to-peer network and community resource, concepts and challenges in contemporary ceramics, and personal artistic practice. There will be time for questions at the end. Registration is encouraged, but not required. The closing reception will follow in the museum from 5pm-7pm. Food and entertainment will be provided.

This exhibition was designed as a celebration of the diverse and expansive practices of professional ceramic artists from the Artaxis membership. Unlike many exhibitions that pick a central theme or form to organize around, the Artaxis Invitational showcases everything from functional pottery to video installations. Participating artists live and work all over the US and represent a variety of different skill sets, viewpoints, and professional experiences.

Longwell Museum hours are Monday – Friday 9:00am – 6:00pm, closed weekends, holidays, and between exhibits. For questions or information call 417.455.5470 or email Josh Novak, Museum Director: JoshuaNovak@Crowder.edu.

MSSU receives $10,000 grant to preserve African Art Collection

(From Southern News Service)

The Department of Art & Design at Missouri Southern has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) which will be used to help preserve the African Art Collection.

The grant application was filed in January and it required an intensive amount of documentation, including a project overview, narrative and a bibliography. The department was notified it had been approved earlier this month.

“The NEH only funded about 40 percent of applicants this grant cycle,” said Dr. Christine Bentley, associate professor and director of the Spiva Art Gallery. “It speaks to the quality of what the staff is doing. I’m honored they recognized what we’re doing as something that’s significant.”

The collection includes more than 300 pieces of art and artifacts. It was assembled by a former assistant professor of art from pieces donated by John and Pam Finley in 1997, along with other contributors. In 2020 it was selected as one of 75 institutions in the United States to participate in the Collections Assessment for Preservation program.

Bentley said the NEH grant funding will be used to ensure the collection is stored in proper and stable archival conditions.

“We recently moved the collection to a space on the first floor of Spiva Library,” she said. “We’re looking at ensuring that they’re stored with the proper light and humidity, purchasing archival carrier trays, light monitors, display shelving and fabrics for draping that are good for the longevity of the collection.

“Moving forward, we also want to participate in a disaster-response workshop. It would cover what we would need to do in the event of a flood, fire or other disaster.”

The African Art Collection is housed in Room 109 of Spiva Library and is available for viewing by appointment. For more information, contact Bentley at 417-625-3066 or Bentley-C@mssu.edu.

Carthage Tech Center instructors attend training for drone pilot certification

(From the Carthage R-9 School District)

Skilled Technical Sciences, and Technology and Engineering Education held a Remote Pilot Training Leading to FAA Part 107 Certification workshop, on July 24 and July 25, 2022, at Ozark Technical Community College, in Springfield, MO.

The workshop was part of the Missouri Association Career and Technical Educators (MoACTE) and Missouri Trade and Technical Association (MTTA) summer pre-conference.

Twenty teachers from Missouri attended the two-day workshop. Andrew Chronister, associate professor of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Engineering and Technology Department, from Southeast Missouri State University taught the workshop.

The workshop provided information and test materials to prepare participants to take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 exam. The FAA Part 107 would certify participants to be remote (drone) pilots.

Participants would be prepared to take their exam at a FAA approved testing center of their choice. Angie Fewin, Multimedia/Business; Jordan Macy, Public Safety; and Shannon Higgins, Public Safety, Instructors from Carthage Technical Center, were among the participants who passed their exam and earned their remote pilot certification.

The association for unmanned vehicle systems international predicts that by the year 2025, at least 100,000 jobs will be created for drone pilots. Skilled Technical Sciences, and Technology and Engineering Education offered this workshop to help prepare teachers and students for the demand of drone pilots in the workforce industry.

Skilled Technical Sciences, and Technology and Engineering Education are part of the Office of College and Career Readiness, at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
