Next phase of widening of 32nd Street to begin Thursday
(From the City of Joplin)With the installation of a new concrete culvert at 32nd Street and Crane drive completed, the 32nd Street widening project is now moving on to the next phase of construction.
Starting Thursday, September 1 the road closure on 32nd St. will be extended from Crane Drive to the west side of Iron Gates Road / Arbor Road.
This will include the closure of the intersection of Day Road and 32nd Street. This is the third closure of multiple closures occurring consecutively on different sections of 32nd Street. Detour routes are posted and access to local properties will be maintained at all times.
The contractor for the 32nd Street widening project is Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc. This improvement will widen 32nd Street, from Schifferdecker Avenue west to Central City Road. The design includes adding a center lane and constructing a sidewalk-shared use path. The $8 million project is funded through the 3/8 cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax approved by voters in 2014.
For questions or comments, please contact Rob Beachner, Capital Improvement Projects Manager, at 417-624-0820, ext. 1543, or via email at rbeachne@joplinmo.org.

Kalbaugh family selected as Jasper County Farm Family
(From University of Missouri Extension)Kyler & Sydney Kalbaugh and family of Jasper were among the families honored during the 64th annual Missouri Farm Family Day, Aug. 15 at the Missouri State Fair.
The Kalbaugh family was selected as the Jasper County Missouri Farm Family by University of Missouri Extension in Jasper County and the local Farm Bureau. The family includes Kinzey Kalbaugh.
Each year, the fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state that are active in their communities, involved in agriculture, and/or participate in local outreach and extension programs such as 4-H or FFA.
The Kalbaugh family operates a 300-acre row crop and beef operation.
The annual event is sponsored by five partner agencies: the Missouri Farm Bureau; the Missouri Department of Agriculture; the Missouri State Fair Commissioners; the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; and MU Extension.
The event showcases the impact that Missouri farm families have on the economy and heritage of the state, said Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe. “These families are involved in agriculture activities in their communities and are active participants in local outreach and extension. As the premier showcase for Missouri agriculture, the Missouri State Fair is most certainly the appropriate place to celebrate these families.”
Carthage Fire Department plans annual Fill the Boot Drive to support MDA
(From the Carthage Fire Department)Fire fighters have collected critical funds in the community since 1954 – one dollar at a time – as part of the Fill the Boot program for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
The Carthage Fire Department will be continuing this long-standing tradition as its members kick off their annual collection raising funds to support MDA’s vision to accelerate research, advance care, and advocate for the support of MDA families.
Dedicated fire fighters from the Carthage Fire Department will be out with boots in hand at the entryway of the Walmart parking area from 12pm to 5pm September 2nd through September 4th.
Fire fighters have been raising funds for MDA since 1954. To date, the Fill the Boot program has raised more than $679 million with involvement from over 300,000 fire fighters nationwide. These funds have led in part to over a dozen FDA-approved drugs in as many years for those with neuromuscular disease. Those treatments were created from MDA’s vision to open a new field of medicine and push the boundaries of the medical frontier we call genetic medicine.

27th annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition set in Neosho
(From Neosho Arts Council)The 27th Annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition is now on display through October at Neosho Arts Council’s Big Spring Gallery (inside the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce) in downtown Neosho, MO.
“We have a great selection of art this year,” said Sarah Serio, president of Neosho Arts Council. “There is art by full time professional artists and by people who’ve only just picked up painting recently.”
That ability to exhibit a range of skill levels is one of this exhibitions founding goals. While the annual event honors the artistic contribution of Neosho’s native son, Thomas Hart Benton, it’s also an opportunity for all area artists to compete in a professional environment.
“The two division’s give students and new artists an opportunity to get their feet wet in competition without going up against someone who’s experienced in the field,” Serio explained. Artists from across Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas are taking part in this year’s exhibition which features oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and works on paper.
“The focus of the Thomas Hart Benton show has always been on traditional 2D mediums,” Serio explained. “These are some of the mediums that Benton himself worked in.”
Kimi Kitada, a curator and arts educator based in Kansas City, MO, will serve as this year’s judge. On September 22 the public is invited to join the artists for an award and critique presentation.
“During the awards our judge will also be giving a brief critique of each winner, which is a unique part of our competition,” Serio said. “This is a great opportunity for new artists to learn what makes a piece of art a winner.”
The awards presentation and critiques will be held at the Community Room of the Neosho/Newton County Library (201 West Spring Street, Neosho, MO).
A public reception and viewing of the exhibition will follow. Kitada will be on hand to discuss works one-on-one with attendees.
The exhibition will be on view at the Big Spring Gallery inside the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce (216 West Spring St., Neosho, MO) during September and October. It will also be on view through the Virtual Big Spring Gallery at neoshoarts.net. You can learn more by following Neosho Arts Council on Facebook and Instagram or visiting their website

MSSU receives $10,000 grant to preserve African Art Collection
(From Southern News Service)The Department of Art & Design at Missouri Southern has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) which will be used to help preserve the African Art Collection.
The grant application was filed in January and it required an intensive amount of documentation, including a project overview, narrative and a bibliography. The department was notified it had been approved earlier this month.
“The NEH only funded about 40 percent of applicants this grant cycle,” said Dr. Christine Bentley, associate professor and director of the Spiva Art Gallery. “It speaks to the quality of what the staff is doing. I’m honored they recognized what we’re doing as something that’s significant.”
The collection includes more than 300 pieces of art and artifacts. It was assembled by a former assistant professor of art from pieces donated by John and Pam Finley in 1997, along with other contributors. In 2020 it was selected as one of 75 institutions in the United States to participate in the Collections Assessment for Preservation program.
Bentley said the NEH grant funding will be used to ensure the collection is stored in proper and stable archival conditions.
“We recently moved the collection to a space on the first floor of Spiva Library,” she said. “We’re looking at ensuring that they’re stored with the proper light and humidity, purchasing archival carrier trays, light monitors, display shelving and fabrics for draping that are good for the longevity of the collection.
“Moving forward, we also want to participate in a disaster-response workshop. It would cover what we would need to do in the event of a flood, fire or other disaster.”
The African Art Collection is housed in Room 109 of Spiva Library and is available for viewing by appointment. For more information, contact Bentley at 417-625-3066 or Bentley-C@mssu.edu.
