Joplin Police Department offers tips to deal with porch pirates

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Joplin Police remind you that the holidays are a very active season for porch pirates, who seek to steal package deliveries. To reduce their opportunities to plunder your loot, we encourage you to try any of the following:

- Have the delivery service schedule delivery when you are home.
- Have packages delivered to a neighbor who will be home.

- Have the delivery service hold your package until you can come pick it up.
- Have your package delivered to your place of work during the day.
- Open a PO Box at your local post office and have packages delivered there.

These tips are relevant all year-round, but we want to remind you this Black Friday weekend when many people will be placing delivery orders.

McDonald County search warrant execution leads to two arrests, guns confiscated

(From the McDonald County Sheriff's Office)

Last week MCSO Detectives received information of a subject living just outside the city of Anderson with outstanding full extradition warrants out of the state of Texas for Probation Violation for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, as well as a warrant out of the state of Oklahoma for Possession of Marijuana and Obstruction.

After further investigation, Detectives learned the subject was also in possession of several firearms and had previous ties to the Aryan Brotherhood.

This morning around 0700am the McDonald County Special Response Team along with other patrol deputies, executed a search warrant at that location and took Matthew S. Convirs, 45, (top photo) into custody after a brief foot chase.

MCSO SRT also located a second white male, Joshua Carr, 27, as well as a juvenile male at the location. Both were taken into custody without incident.

After the property was secure, MCSO Detectives searched the property and located several firearms, and a large amount of ammunition. One of the weapons, a single shot 410 shot gun, had been cut down to a barrel length of just under 13 inches.

Due to Convirs’s extensive criminal history, all weapons and ammunition were seized with State and possibly Federal charges pending. Both Convirs and Carr were transported to the McDonald County Detention Center for outstanding warrants, the juvenile was taken into care by the Missouri Division of Family Services.

Defining Montessori education topic for next Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

Children learn in different ways and at different times. That is the heart of the philosophy of Montessori Education and the focus of next week’s Newsmakers program. Leah Gurley, a former Joplin school teacher, has opened a new school in Joplin called Harmony Montessori Academy. The school utilizes the Montessori method which encourages children to learn at their own pace.

There are more than seven thousand Montessori schools worldwide based on the educational strategies of Maria Montessori. Those teach children to take ownership of their learning while tapping into a child’s unique curiosity. A Harmony instructor demonstrates a lesson with a child during the show.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of December 1 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, December 6 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet in Carthage. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.

City of Joplin to update tree inventory with state conservation grant

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin recently was awarded a Community Forestry Cost-share Grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Community Forestry Cost-share assists communities with promoting the benefits of and improving their community forests.

With this grant, Joplin Parks and Recreation can update its existing tree inventory, assess trees for risk in city parks, and prune trees in Campbell Parkway and Senator Ron Richard Memorial Park. Centrally located in Joplin, this area is a popular destination for the public.

City staff utilize the collected information to make decisions about tree care that benefit citizens and improve the safety and health of the pruned trees in Campbell Parkway and Senator Ron Richard Memorial Park.

“Missouri Department of Conservation has been a great partner with the City throughout the years on various projects,” said Paul Bloomberg, Parks and Recreation Director. “They bring many helpful resources to us and our community, and we appreciate their assistance in caring for our urban forests.”

MDC's Community Conservation Program promotes sustainable development practices and the establishment of natural resource conservation practices in municipal and developing areas. Their support helps the City maintain its Tree City USA status.
