Portion of E 4th Street in Joplin to be closed

(From the City of Joplin)

Starting Wednesday morning, December 3, East 4th Street will be closed at the alley between Main Street and Virginia Avenue. This is scheduled as a two-day closure. Drivers will need to use an alternative east/west route during this time.

Allo Fiber crews are installing lines in this area and will need to cross 4th Street to complete the connection. Work is expected to be done by the end of Thursday, December 4, allowing 4th Street to reopen in the evening.

The City appreciates your patience as this infrastructure improvement is completed in this area. ALLO has been working throughout Joplin since spring 2024 to provide a fast, reliable fiber network for residents and businesses.

In April 2024, the Joplin City Council passed an ordinance solidifying a development agreement with ALLO Fiber to build a fiber-optic broadband network for the community. ALLO has committed $40 million to its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) project to bring a 10 Gigabit network to Joplin. This public-private partnership follows the City’s extensive work of identifying needs and soliciting bids for this service.

The City recognized the internet limitations which some residents experienced in their neighborhoods and other pockets of the community and has been working to bring broadband internet to the community for nearly five years. The needs were evident following the 2011 disaster when internet services went down. The recent pandemic heightened the demand for broadband in our community as many worked from home, and schools moved to online courses.

When Allo began their work in Joplin, Mayor Keenan Cortez noted, “This will provide more options for our residents and businesses regarding connectivity with the fiber-optic network they bring. It enhances our growing community and will help drive economic development, improve interactive learning in our schools and higher education institutions, and provide new options for our remote workers. Access to high-speed internet is critical for our existing businesses, residents, and those looking to move to an affordable and thriving community.”
