Ribbon cutting ceremony set for new trolley
(From the City of Joplin)
The City of Joplin invites the residents of Joplin to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the City’s new Sunshine Lamp Trolley on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at the trolley stop located in front of the Joplin Public Library.
The original Sunshine Lamp Trolley which was placed into operation in July 2007 will be officially retiring from service. Since giving its ceremonial first ride along Main Street from the Joplin Public Library to the Newman Building, this trolley has traveled more than 198,000 miles and provided over 226,934 rides. This trolley became a fixture on the Blue Route and served as a public ambassador for our trolley service to hundreds of thousands of Joplin residents and out of town visitors driving along Range Line Road, 7th Street, MSSU, and Downtown Joplin.
The new Sunshine Lamp Trolley is a heavy duty model, an El Dorado EZ-Rider II, designed specifically for use on daily bus routes with modern transit enhancements such as a low floor, wheel chair entrance/exit ramps at both the front and rear doors, air-ride suspension system, and three wheel chair securement areas. Although it’s equipped with modern features needed for a busy transit system, the solid oak wooden benches, brass handrails with leather straps, expanded seating for thirty-six passengers, and iconic brass bell, it has all the classic charm that made the old trolley a community favorite.
The new trolley was funded through a Federal Transportation Administration grant which provided 80% of the $390,115 purchase price. The remaining 20% was funded through the Joplin Transportation Sales Tax.

Mercy cuts 11 positions in Joplin, 14 in Carthage
(From Mercy Hospital)
In response to economic and environmental changes in health care, Mercy has implemented a workforce reduction across its seven-state region. The reduction is limited to non-patient care support areas. A total of 11 positions in Joplin and 14 positions in Carthage have been eliminated as a result of the reduction. Throughout Mercy, a total of 220 positions have been eliminated, less than one percent of Mercy’s 40,000-member workforce.
Co-workers whose positions have been eliminated are being treated with compassion, fairness and respect. Co-workers will receive outplacement services and a severance package including compensation and benefits based on their position and length of service.
Most co-workers whose positions have been eliminated will be given the opportunity to leave Mercy immediately so that they can begin to plan their transition. In certain situations, co-workers may be asked to remain with Mercy for a short period of time to complete or transition their current work to others.
“While not uncommon in today’s health care environment, these kinds of changes are nonetheless difficult,” said Lynn Britton, Mercy president and CEO. “As we realign to operate more efficiently, growth and expansion will continue across Mercy as community needs warrant.”

Wood chip giveaways set for next week
(From the City of Joplin)
The City of Joplin will resume its free wood chip giveaways on June 20 and 21 and various Fridays and Saturdays until the chips are gone, the City will load wood chips from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., weather permitting. Bring a truck or trailer to the wood chip site, and City employees will use heavy equipment to load the wood chips for you. THIS FREE EVENT IS OPEN TO EVERYONE, REGARDLESS OF RESIDENCY.
The wood chip site is located 6/10 (six tenths) of a mile north of the intersection of Belle Center Road on North Schifferdecker Avenue, commonly known as Snow Ball Hill between Zora and Belle Center. Look for the sign and turn onto the driveway on the west side of Schifferdecker Avenue.
The chips are derived from many different trees that came down in the December 2013 ice storm. They are then mixed together during the grinding process.
Mike McDaniel, City Arborist reminds residents, “When applied around trees, the mulch should not touch the trunk of the tree. It should resemble a flattened doughnut and be no more than three to four inches deep.” To receive additional information or a printed flyer, contact the Parks Department at 417-624-6937.
Wood chips are effective in controlling soil erosion and insulating plant roots against extreme temperatures. Mulching reduces evaporation thus the need to water, which helps conserve water resources. Placing wood chips around plants and trees also controls weeds thus reduces the need for herbicides, which helps prevent water pollution. Mulch also protects the trunk and surface roots from mowers and string trimmers.
Self-serve wood chips are available at the Joplin Recycling Center, 1310 West A Street. The center is open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The City will offer wood chips in bulk quantities again on July 18 & 19, if supply has not been depleted. Please watch for future announcements. For more information, call the Joplin Recycling Coordinator at 417-624-0820 Ext. 501.
