Support for foster care topic on next Newsmakers
(From KGCS)More than twelve thousand children are in the Missouri foster care system. Strains on staffing have led to an effort to reform the system. But a local non-profit organization is working to keep kids out of foster care while supporting biological families as well. The group is Foster Adopt Connect and the impact of its efforts is the focus of the next Newsmakers program.
Tom Furrh, Foster Adopt Connect Joplin Branch Director, discusses the numbers of families who have been helped since the organization established an office in Joplin two years ago. Furrh also shares special events that will serve as fundraisers for the charity.
Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of December 3 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, December 9 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.
KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
Pre-school story hour scheduled at George Washington Carver National Monument
(From George Washington Carver National Monument)The staff of George Washington Carver National Monument invites preschool families to Preschool Story Hour on Tuesday, December 5th at 10:00 a.m. This free, family friendly program is held indoors in collaboration with Neosho Parents at Teachers (PAT). A park ranger will read an interactive book about George Washington Carver. PAT will conduct a nature prints craft activity. Preschool Story Hour is geared toward children two to six years of age.
After the program, preschoolers and their families are encouraged to explore the discovery area located inside the visitor center with interactive exhibits such as microscopes, animal exhibits, a one room school classroom, and more. Additionally, visitors may choose to take a walk on the 3/4-mile nature trail, watch the park film, or picnic.
Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver - scientist, educator, and humanitarian.

Girard Police Department reports increase in vehicle break-ins

There has been an uptick in vehicle break-ins. There is no way to completely eradicate our community of this behavior. However, we can help ourselves and our neighbors. See something, say something. Lock your doors. Do as the picture says!If you have cameras on your house let the PD know so we can make a list. So, if you or maybe your neighbor's property has been tampered with or worse it’s been taken, we will have the upper hand with the security footage.

Joplin woman arrested for DWI after driving wrong way on I-49
(From the Jasper Police Department)On Monday, November 27th, 2023 at 8:15 pm, Jasper PD Sgt. Amber Ashby stopped a black GMC truck on NB I-49 at the Thorn Road exit.
A report was given by a witness that the above vehicle was observed driving northbound in the southbound lane of I-49. Many other traffic violations were observed by the witness as well as Sgt. Ashby.
Dhar was charged with DWI and other traffic offenses.
Dhar is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Crowder College Theatre Department plans collection of short plays, student projects
(From Crowder College)Crowder College Theatre Department will perform a collection of student acting projects and short plays December 8-9, 7pm nightly in the Blackbox Theatre located inside the Elsie Plaster Community Center on the Neosho campus.
“There will be a variety of short scenes and plays performed by students from Acting I, Theatre Practicum, and scholarship students,” stated Annie Smith, Theatre Director/Instructor. This is her first season at Crowder College.
Annie Smith, the new Crowder Theatre Director, is excited to join the Crowder family. A native of southwest Missouri, Annie completed her undergrad work at College of the Ozarks before earning her Masters of Fine Arts degree in Theatre from the University of Southern Mississippi. Outside of theatre, Annie is an award-winning author. With her husband and two children, Annie enjoys hiking the Ozarks and frequenting her local library.

Public meeting set to discuss proposal to permit neon signs in Joplin's historic downtown district
(From the City of Joplin)A Public Meeting to discuss proposed changes to the City of Joplin’s sign code ordinances will be held on Tuesday, December 12. Joplin Historic Preservation Commission members and City staff seek input from citizens relating to proposed code changes to permit neon signs in Joplin’s historic downtown district. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting. It will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 530 Somewhere, 530 S. Main Street.

MSSU Choral Society schedules winter concert

The MSSU Choral Society will perform its annual Winter Concert on Sunday, December 10, 2023, 3:00 p.m. at First Community Church, 2007 E 15th St.
The concert includes several favorite holiday works from “O Holy Night” to “Jingle Bells” (with a twist!) to “Joy to the World” and the grandeur of Benjamin Britten’s arrangement of “Personent Hodie,” among other selections.
A special addition this year includes a bell choir accompanying the chorus and playing additional music.
The event is free, and donations will be gratefully accepted.
Search warrant execution leads to arrest of Joplin man on drug, weapons charges
(From Ozarks Drug Enforcement Team)On 11/29/2023 at approximately 0945 hours Joplin Swat and Ozarks Drug Enforcement Team served a Narcotics Search Warrant at 3042 West 15th Street in Joplin Missouri.
Johnny Green 37 years of age was arrested on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and receiving stolen property. The charges are all pending with the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office currently. Further charges maybe sought against the other occupants later. This case is still an ongoing Investigation.

Badge-pinning ceremony held for new Joplin police officers
(From the Joplin Police Department)On Monday afternoon the Joplin Police Department held a badge pinning ceremony to recognize several officers in the department who have graduated field training and also those who have received recent promotions.
The Joplin Police Department also recognized three officers who were recently promoted. They are Corporal Jeremy Eads, Corporal Andrew Moreno, and Corporal Mackenzie Roach.
We are proud to recognize these officers, celebrate their accomplishments and we wish them the best as they move forward into their next assignments. Please join us in congratulating them on a job well done.

(From the Joplin Police Department)On Saturday, November 25th, 2023, at 7:24 a.m. an officer with the Joplin Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop on a white Ford F-350 for several traffic violations and suspicion that the driver was intoxicated.
Rural Baxter Springs man sentenced to nine years on meth distribution charge
(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)Timothy Leon Sargent, 60, of rural Baxter Springs was sentenced in Cherokee County District Court earlier this week to 111 months incarceration after pleading guilty to Possessing Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute.
The prison sentence stems from a May, 2022 traffic stop conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, where a search of the vehicle driven by Sargent resulted in the discovery and seizure of a considerable amount of methamphetamine.
Sargent was prosecuted by the Cherokee County Attorney's Office.

Thanksgiving traffic stop leads to arrest of Parsons man on drug charges
(From the Parsons Police Department)On November 23, 2023 at approximately 11:00 a.m., Off. Frank Pousher, Cpl. Christian Smith and K9 Morgan were on patrol. They observed a 2010 Nissan Altima commit a traffic violation by failing to signal, in the area of 15th and Clark Ave. There they conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle. The driver and only occupant was found to be Damian Lajarwin-Gerre Williams, 33 years old of Parsons.
During the stop, K9 Morgan was deployed by Cpl. Smith and conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle. K9 Morgan gave a positive alert to the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, amounts of marijuana and paraphernalia were located, as well as more than 25 pills marked as controlled substance Oxycodone, which Williams was in unlawful possession of.
Williams was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance with the intent to distribute, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and a traffic infraction of failure to signal.

11/21/2023 While investigating suspicious activity, officer arrested a subject and transported subject to the Barton County Jail and booked for 4th degree assault special victim. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were seized and will be sent to be tested.
11/22/2023 Officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Lexington for a domestic disturbance in progress. Drug paraphernalia was seized and for consideration of charges will be sent to be tested.
11/24/2023 Officer was dispatched to the 1200 block of Poplar in reference to a stolen wagon. Another wagon was left in place of the stolen wagon. Investigation continues.
11/25/2023 Officer received a report of a subject acting irrationally in the 700 block of W. 8th and was gone from the scene. A short time later, officer received report of this subject intentionally striking a car, with his vehicle at 9th & Oak, then fleeing the scene. At the same time, another officer observed the suspect’s vehicle at 13th & Broadway. Suspect was arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s Office and is being charged with Assault Domestic 1st degree, Assault – police officer, DWI/alcohol and Endanger Welfare Child.
11/26/2023 Officer conducted a traffic stop at 10th & Maple St. Subject was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail and issued a Driving While Intoxicated citation.

Author Colm Toibin to preview new novel on Newsmakers
(From KGCS)An author with roots in Ireland shares his inspirations for writing his successful fiction novels and previews a new novel on this week’s Newsmakers.
Colm TóibÃn (pronounced “cuh-lem toe-bean”) is a novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist, critic, poet, and playwright. TóibÃn was born in the small Irish town of Enniscorthy. He is the Irene and Sidney B. Silverman Professor of the Humanities in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
TóibÃn, the author of Brooklyn, the story of a young Irish immigrant in Brooklyn in the 1950s, visited Missouri Southern State University for a book signing and lecture. Many classes and a book club at MSSU read Brooklyn during the fall of 2023 as part of the Ireland themed semester. He is currently publishing a second book, titled Long Island involving the same characters, that takes place decades later.
Colm TóibÃn started his career as a poet and found success with his fiction writing. He has spent time not only in Ireland, but also in Spain and the United States.
