The Highway Patrol arrested Shaun P. Stewart, 37, Neosho, 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Newton County on a warrant for failure to register as a sex offender.
Stewart entered an Alford plea in Barry County Circuit Court in 2009 to a charge of statutory sodomy. In an Alford plea, the defendant does not admit guilt, but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him. The case was heard in Barry County on a change of venue from Newton County.
Online court records indicate the Newton County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed the failure to register as a sex offender charge against Stewart on May 25.

Nancy Hughes devotion: Battle of the Wills
Key Scripture:
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Psalm 143:10 (NIV)
Devotion:
When my children were small, they struggled with decisions all the time. Which cereal to eat, what outfit to wear to school, which television show to watch.
So I made it easy for them: I gave them options. Rice Krispies or Cheerios? The blue shorts and blue and white top or the green outfit? The Smurfs or the Muppets?
There were no other alternatives; I offered two choices and they had to decide.
The fact that they were all three a bit strong-willed did not matter to me. It was my will against theirs. And when they didn’t do what I wanted, I was even more determined to be in control and decide for them. Most of the time it ended in tears or tantrums.
I’m trying to do less of that as an adult. At least in public.
Here’s my point. Isn’t that the same thing that we do with God? We go before Him and we give Him our options as we pray.
“Here are your choices, God. Do I buy the big house on Poplar Street or the big house on the cul-de-sac? Who should I date: the tall good looking boy or the shorter, smarter boy? Which would be better for my backyard – the above ground or in ground pool?”
Read today’s Key Scripture in Psalm 143:10. “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God…” What the Psalmist does not say is “Do my will, God.”
How about us? Too many times my attitude when I pray is one of “Here are MY options, God. So tell me which one You want” instead of sharing from my heart and then asking Him what He has in mind for my life.
There is nothing wrong with sharing your ideas and plans with the Lord. He wants you to do that! The problem comes when we move from sharing to demanding that the Creator of the Universe choose from OUR options.
I believe that as my relationship with Jesus becomes more a “one-on-One” and not a “me here/You there” connection, I will want to follow His direction. But that will not happen until I toss out my desires and wants and replace them with His.
And as I follow His direction, He will begin to shape those very things that I desire most in my life to be what He desires most for my life. My prayers change from my choices for God to His will for me.
I encourage you to go before the Lord without a decision, without an agenda, without your will ahead of His. Ask Him what He wants for your life. Ask Him for direction. Ask for wisdom. And ask for a peace when His answer comes, if it doesn’t conform to the answer that you thought you wanted.
Seek His heart and ask Him to change yours to make you more like Him. Then step back and watch what He does.
His will or yours? The answer will be obvious.
My Prayer for Today:
Father, I come before you asking that you show me your will for my life. I lay all my plans down. Replace them with your plans for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Reflection:
Have you ever gone before the Lord with your answer to your request and simply asked Him to “rubber stamp” your will? What was the result?
Application:
Journal your prayer requests in a column titled “My Will.” Next journal the title “God’s Will” in the next column. Before you write anything down in the second column, read today’s Power Verses and ask the Lord to show you His will for your life. Write down what He is sharing in your heart. Are they the same or different?
Power Verses:
Psalm 143:10 (NIV) “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Fire Department to present signed helmet to Joplin Blasters
(From the Joplin Fire Department)
Wearing a baseball cap is the norm for the players of the Joplin Blasters, an independent pro baseball team, however teammates could have worn a firefighter’s helmet recently when they helped a lone firefighter at a house fire in Holton, Kansas.
According to Joplin CEO and manager Gabe Suarez, the players were headed to Wichita and noticed a house fire when the team bus pulled over for a food and bathroom break. Team members were curious and went to the fire where they found a lone firefighter at the scene. Players immediately began helping him by unraveling the hose and helping to attach it to the fire hydrant until other public safety officials could arrive.
To recognize their response to a dangerous situation, Joplin Fire Chief Jim Furgerson will present the Blasters with a signed helmet from the Joplin Fire Department during pre-game ceremonies at Friday, July 29 game. The presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Becker Stadium. Furgerson will also give the Blasters a certificate declaring them as 2016 Honorary Firefighters.
“Fires are very dangerous,” said Furgerson. “The Blasters deserve this honor for their quick response in helping during this situation, and assisting the firefighter until more help arrived.”
More details about this incident can be found on the Joplin Blasters Facebook page or on their Twitter page (@JoplinBlasters.)

100th anniversary of Wildcat Park to be celebrated
(From Wildcat Glades and Audubon Center)
Cool off at the Shoal Creek Water Festival and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wildcat Park. Wildcat Park is 100 years old this year and we will celebrate that milestone at the Shoal Creek Water Festival.
Cool off at the Shoal Creek Water Festival and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wildcat Park. Wildcat Park is 100 years old this year and we will celebrate that milestone at the Shoal Creek Water Festival.
In 1916, Wildcat Park was the social gathering place for summer recreation in Joplin. It was the site for group outings- from traveling gypsies to family picnics- and courting couples. Residents came for dances, to frequent concession stands, and to enjoy the tennis courts and water recreation which included a water slide. We will revisit that era with a timeline loop featuring Native Americans, our mining history, early 20th century clothing and hats, antique cars and more. Join Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center in Joplin, Missouri on August 13, 2016 from 9am to 3pm for a day of water fun!
This year’s celebration will include a kid’s fishing tournament sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation located at Walter Woods. Preregistration for the tournament is required. The annual Kid’s Shoebox Boat Race is open to kids age three to 12. We can’t leave the adults out of the fun! Adults and children accompanied by an adult may put their creativity to the test and build their very own cardboard boat to race for prizes and bragging rights. Preregistration for both the shoebox and cardboard boat races are required. For more information including entry deadlines, fees and guidelines for construction of the boats, contact the Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center.
Other activities will include more than twenty informational and interactive booths, food, an antique car show, a tube slide and a kayak demonstration. Learn about water quality, conservation and ecology at one of our water activity booths.
The day would not be complete without the annual Rubber Duck Race. Cheer your duck on to victory and have a chance to win great prizes. This day of water fun is FREE to the public and all ages are welcome.

Nancy Hughes devotion: I've read the book
Key Scripture:
“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand and I will do all that I please.”
Isaiah 46:9-10 (NIV)
Devotion:
“Come watch a movie with me, Grandma,” my granddaughter pleaded. “It’s a really good one!” She added that last statement to try to entice me to join her, knowing that for me to sit and watch a movie, it truly has to be “a really good one.”
I gave in and joined her on the sofa with a blanket, sodas and popcorn. Before I knew it I was caught up in the action of the characters and the mystery that surrounded them.
One twist after another caught me by surprise, making me jump and Ella giggle.
“That detective is going to bite it,” I commented. “Any minute he’s going to disappear and we won’t know who got him.” Ella disagreed.
“He’ll be okay. He’s a main character.” And she was right.
“That’s the killer!” I yelled. “She has to be the one because she’s hiding the gun!” But once again, Ella shook her head “no.” And once again she was correct.
I glanced at my granddaughter. “Have you seen this movie before because you always seem to know the outcome of every scene and what’s coming next.”
“Nope,” she grinned. I turned to look at her. “Then how do you know that the detective is going to be okay and the hair dresser is not the killer?”
Ella gave me a huge smile. “Because I’ve read the book, Grandma! I already know what’s coming and how it’s going to turn out!”
Now it was my turn to smile. Because, my friends, WE have that same confidence in “what’s coming and how it’s going to turn out” in our lives.
Read today’s Key Scripture in Isaiah 46:9-10. God tells us clearly that He knows all things, beginning to end. And we can too.
We have the Bible. God has allowed us to see what happened in the beginning in
Genesis and He has shown us what will happen in the end in Revelation. We, too, can know the ending if we have read the Book.
I know this world is full of pain and heartache, struggles and failures. There are unanswered questions and unending grief. But please don’t lose hope! Hold tight to the truth of God’s Word!
In the end good wins over evil. The bad guy (Satan) loses, Jesus has the victory, and we will live with Him for eternity.
How do I know that? I’ve read the Book.
My Prayer for Today:
Father, thank you for giving me hope through your Word. Thank you for being in control of all things in my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Reflection:
Have you ever looked at the back of a book to find out the ending? Have you done that with the Bible? Why or why not?
Application:
Ask a prayer warrior/study friend to partner with you in reading the Bible together weekly and lifting up prayer requests to the Lord.
Write in your journal “I know the One who wrote the Book, beginning to end. He will never let go of me.” Text that message to your prayer warrior when the tough stuff hits, to encourage each other to hold on to God’s Word.
Power Verses:
Isaiah 46:9-10 (NIV) “Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand and I will do all that I please.”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “’For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’.”
Revelation 22:13 (NIV) “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
