Community bands' outdoor programs subject of next Newsmakers

(From KGCS)

Community concert bands are known for patriotic fanfare at Memorial Day and July 4th festivities but members say they offer more than just marches.

Three community bands will perform a wide variety of music during a festival called CBOP ’24. That stands for Community Bands Outdoor Picnic 2024 and the event is the focus of the coming week’s Newsmakers program.

Event coordinator, Jud Fisher and Marian Mobley with the Heartland Concert Band discuss why the event was started and give details of Thursday night concerts in Schifferdecker Park leading up to the big event. They say food trucks and an ‘instrument petting zoo’ will make the CBOP festival fun for kids who are often curious about how sounds are created. David Wiggins with the Coffeyville Municipal Band shares some of their playlist for the event while Dee Brake talks about the Republic Community Band.

Kicking off the band performances on June 22nd will be the U.S. Army 399th Band at 12:30 p.m. Each main stage band will play about sixty minutes while the bluegrass band, Spillwater Drive, will perform during community band breaks.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of June 2 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet in Carthage. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.

Public invited to view plans for Dover Outdoor Recreation Area in Joplin

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin invites the public to view conceptual plans for the new Dover Outdoor Recreation Area planned for the north side of Joplin during a Public Meeting on Thursday, June 6. The meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Joplin History and Mineral Museum, 504 S. Schifferdecker Avenue.

This park development of nearly 100 acres located south of Zora Avenue and east of Lone Elm Road will offer biking activities for all ages and skill levels. Joplin Parks and Recreation staff, along with other City staff members and community stakeholders, have been meeting with SWT Design from Kansas City, the consultant for this project, to gather ideas and input on the design and features of this recreational park.

Plans include bicycle-related amenities such as a BMX-style pump track, a children’s bike playground, and single-track mountain bike trails throughout. The park will also include restrooms, lighting, and areas for community events. SWT has also teamed with the International Mountain Bike Association (“IMBA”) to design this park.

“With the topography and location of this park, we’ve looked at the best use of the natural features it offers,” said Paul Bloomberg, Parks and Recreation Director. “There are some exciting elements that this park will have because of the natural environment we are planning to utilize in the design.”

Citizens can view renderings of initial plans and provide their input about this new park’s features and layout. This informal public meeting provides a come-and-go format for the public to view informational displays, visit with City staff about the park and ask questions about the project.

If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to discuss the project, please contact Paul Bloomberg at 417-624-0820, ext. 1504, or email pbloomberg@joplinmo.org .

In April 2023, Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced that the Dover Outdoor Recreation Area (DORA) will receive $1.437 million through the Local Tourism Asset Development Grant Program. Funded through the American Rescue Plan Act, Parson included 26 communities in this effort to bring recovery assistance to Missouri’s tourism, travel, and hospitality industries.

DORA was initially introduced to voters as a project within the Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax Renewal efforts in August 2021. The grant funding will offset some of the costs, and the City will provide a match of approximately $1.7 million.

This project also allows improvements to undeveloped land, restoring some of the landscape back to prairie while adding a parking lot, a shelter, and a restroom within the park. West Soccer Field Road will be improved as an entrance into DORA.

Funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), this program is focused on investing in communities that rely on tourism, travel and hospitality for continued economic growth. The City is one of 26 grants awarded by the Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) through their Local Tourism Asset Development Program. The Local Tourism Asset Development Grant Program was launched in October 2022. The program awarded competitive grants to applicants, including destination marketing organizations (DMOs), convention and visitors bureaus, municipalities, nonprofit organizations, and chambers of commerce affected by the pandemic. Grant awards will fund a variety of projects, such as welcome and recreation centers, property renovations, museum expansions, park improvements, indoor and outdoor attraction development, and more.

City of Joplin asks public to remove Memorial Day decorations by Monday

 (From the City of Joplin)

City officials are respectfully reminding the public of their opportunity to remove and preserve Memorial Day decorations from graves in city cemeteries by Monday, June 3, to prevent the flowers and decorations from being discarded. Citizens who want to keep these decorations should remove them before that date. To ensure a safe and efficient cemetery maintenance process, the remaining decorations on gravesides will be discarded beginning June 3.

“We recognize the importance of keeping our cemeteries clean, mowed, and well-maintained,” said Parks and Recreation Director Paul Bloomberg.

“Flowers must be removed from gravesites to provide a clear and safe path for the mowers. We strive to be respectful of all those represented in our cemeteries and their loved ones. This is why we encourage those who have decorated their loved ones’ graves to remove flowers and other decorations before June 3 as a way to help us maintain a respectful and well-maintained facility for honoring those who have gone before us.”

The City of Joplin owns and operates four cemeteries, which are a division of Joplin Parks and Recreation. Cemeteries include:

Fairview Cemetery, 13th & Maiden Lane;
Forest Park Cemetery, 4th and Range Line;

Pavement sealing work planned in Jasper, Dade, six other counties

(From MoDOT)

Pavement Sealing Work Planned for Routes in 8 Southwest Missouri Counties Starting Week of June 3

State routes in eight (8) southwest Missouri counties are scheduled to be sealed with a mixture of rock and oil beginning the week of June 3, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Here’s a look at the locations where MoDOT crews will be working:
Cedar County: Routes A, B, BB
Polk County: Routes A, OO, C, Y, K, Z

Vernon County: Route HH between County Road 437 and Vernon/Cedar County line
Clair County: Routes O, OO
Dade County: Routes A, E, W
Jasper County: Route A
Dallas County: Route AA between Route O and Route UU
Webster County:
Route Y

Drivers also can expect flaggers and pilot cars directing them through the work zone. Drivers should wait for the pilot vehicle before proceeding through the work zone or before entering the work zone from a side road.

Signs and message boards will alert drivers to the work zone.

Weather and/or scheduling delays will alter the work schedule.
