(From Crowder College)Crowder College presented Certified Medical Assistant certificates to two Freeman Health System employees via the apprenticeship agreement between the organizations.
The program combines Crowder College classroom education and on-the-job training with Freeman Health System with paid tuition.
Students spend 20 hours a week benefitting from a variety of learning opportunities in the classroom and the ability to travel to various provider-based clinics within the Joplin area and outlying clinics including Kansas and Oklahoma locations.
“This has been a great partnership with Freeman which creates a win for all involved,” stated Dr. Phillip Witt, Vice President of Career and Technical Education. “The classroom activity is held on the front-end providing the students the opportunity to get their clinical hours and hands-on training at various Freeman Health System locations.”
Crowder College is a registered Department of Labor Apprenticeship program provider in partnership with Branco Enterprises Inc. (Carpentry), Bill’s Electric Inc. (Electrician), Certified Express, Inc. and Contract Freighters, Inc. (Truck Driving) in addition to Freeman Health System (CMA). Traffic delays expected on MO 59 in Noel

TRAFFIC ALERT: Lane Reduction, Traffic Delays on Route 59 in McDonald Co. Beginning Week of March 6
Where: Lane closures on Missouri Route 59 (Cliffside Drive) between Missouri Route 90 and Main Street in Noel
When: 7 a.m., Monday, March 6 and for the next several weeks
Traffic Impacts
One lane closed on Route 59 with traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals
One lane of Route 59 OPEN at all times
All lanes of Route 59 OPEN if construction pauses for longer than two (2) weeks
No signed detours
Drivers are urged to find alternate routes
Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zones
Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for road closings/traffic impacts

Lane closures, traffic delays expected on U. S. 71 in McDonald County
(From MODOT)Drivers can expect lane closures and traffic delays when a project to resurface a section of U.S. Route 71 and Route OO in McDonald County near Pineville begins the week of March 6, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
Contractor crews will remove the existing asphalt driving surface and replace it with a new asphalt surface on Route 71 from Goodin Hollow Road in Pineville south to the Missouri/Arkansas state line and on Route OO from Route 71 south to the Missouri/Arkansas state line south of Jane.
In addition to the resurfacing, the contractor will install new guardrail, rumble strips, signs, overhead lighting and traffic signal loop detectors in areas on Route 71. Contractor crews also will add a new right turn lane from northbound Route 71 to Rains Road in Pineville.
Traffic Impacts
At least one lane of Route 71 traffic will be OPEN in each direction at all times
All lanes of Route 71 traffic will be OPEN during nighttime hours
Route OO drivers will encounter flaggers and/or pilot cars where crews are working. Drivers should wait for the pilot vehicle before proceeding through the work zone or before entering the work zone from a side road.
Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zones
No signed detours
Drivers should find alternate routes around the work zones

Galena man sentenced on battery charge
James Bilke Jr., 50, of Galena, was sentenced to over a year imprisonment earlier this month in Cherokee County District Court.
The 15 month sentence came after Bilke pled guilty to Attempted Aggravated Battery, stemming from a January 2020 altercation.
Bilke is being held in the Cherokee County Jail pending transfer to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
City of Joplin opens tree limb dropoff service early due to storm
(From the City of Joplin)Due to last night’s storm, residents may have experienced broken and downed tree limbs. To help with their disposal, the City will open its tree limb drop-off site for residents to bring their limbs and branches damaged from the storm. The site will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 1 through March 3.
The City’s monthly tree limb program also starts this month, and the site will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday and the Friday preceding it, March 17 and March 18. We will offer this service every third Saturday and the Friday preceding the third Saturday starting this month through October.
The drop-off site address is 1702 North Schifferdecker Avenue, which is approximately six-tenths of a mile north of Belle Center Road on the west side of Schifferdecker Avenue. This free drop-off service is for Joplin residents only. Professional contractors will not be allowed to dump.
Joplin residents should also note that the City’s residential trash service through Republic Services allows yard waste removal on their regular trash pick-up day. Limbs must be cut to a maximum of four (4) feet and bundled. Bundles shall be no heavier than 50 pounds. The diameter of each tree limb shall be no larger than four (4) inches.

Kansas man, suspect in February 7 shooting, arrested after firing shots at Joplin police officers
(From the Joplin Police Department)On February 24th, 2023, at approximately 11:18 pm officers with the Joplin Police Department attempted to conduct a high-risk traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Tahoe near 2315 W. 7th Street.
At 11:24 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023, Cherokee County law enforcement were notified a suspect was actively fleeing from, and shooting at, Joplin Police Officers. The pursuit entered Kansas north of Galena, and ended when the suspect crashed north of Highway 66 on Chico Road, west of Galena.
The suspect, identified as 35 year-old Adam Kastler, of Burlingame, Kansas, was apprehended and transported to the Cherokee County Jail.
No law enforcement discharged their firearm, and none were injured during the incident.
Kastler is being held in Cherokee County on allegations of Attempted Capital Murder, Attempting Killing of a Police Dog, Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Possession of Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia, Fleeing Law Enforcement and several other traffic violations.
Additionally, Kastler is being held on multiple outstanding felony warrants from Newton County, Missouri, along with other arrest warrants issued in Lyon County, Emporia and Ford County, in Kansas.
Kastler is also expected to face additional charges in Missouri.
