Meth evidence found by Sarcoxie Police foils Carthage man's claim of being "Type A" diabetic

On December 28th, 2017 at approximately 945PM:

Two Sarcoxie Officers were conducting routine patrol when they observed a White Chevy TrailBlazer without license plate lights, making the plates illegible! The officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with two male subjects. The Officers ran their names. The passenger, identified as Darrel Long, 34, had an outstanding warrant out of Carthage for petty theft. Long was pulled out of the vehicle and placed under arrest. Long was found to have a needle on him. The conversation went as so:

Officer: Oh, you've got a needle? Are you diabetic or something?
Long: Yea, I've been a diabetic all my life!
Officer: What are you? Type A or Type B?
Long: Type A!!
Officer: Oh Yeah?! Last I checked, it was Type 1 and Type 2!

*SPOILER ALERT* The needle tested positive for methamphetamine! *NO SURPRISE*

The driver was arrested for driving while suspended. The Sarcoxie officers and a Jasper County deputy searched the vehicle up and down and were unable to locate anything. The Deputy opened up the hood, and right next to the fuse box was a plastic container. Everything you see in the photo below tested positive for methamphetamine or ecstasy. We told Long if he had anything else on him, he better tell us before he gets to the jail. Long told us he had three more needles on him and stated that was it.

Once we arrived to the jail, Long was searched. Immediately during the search, a gauze ball was found on him. Upon opening the gauze ball, 17 Sudafed pills were found.

Long was arrested and charges were sent for: possession of a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, Delivery or concealment of controlled substances, liquor or prohibited articles on premises of any correctional center or city, county or private jail.

A band of light snow will continue through the early morning hours
mainly along and south of US Highway 60. A dusting of snow is

Wind chill values early this morning will range from around zero
to as cold as fifteen below zero.

Wind chill values late tonight into early Monday morning will
range from 10 below zero to 25 below zero. These wind chill
values are very dangerous to those outside and precautions will
need to be taken to minimize the risk of frostbite.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

Wind chill values Monday night into Tuesday will range from five
below zero to twenty below zero.

Wind chill values from five below zero to ten above zero can be
expected at times from Wednesday through Friday.

Joplin woman seriously injured in accident on I-44

A Joplin woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 9:01 p.m. Saturday on I-44, three miles east of Mount Vernon.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Honda Civic driven by Shawntel L. McHenry, 43, Joplin, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

McHenry was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Granby man killed in accident at Woodland and South Range Line

(From the Joplin Police Department)

We responded to a single vehicle, single occupant crash at Woodland and South Range Line near the Silver Creek neighborhood at 11:45 pm on 12/29/17. The southbound vehicle left the roadway, rolled down a ravine, and struck a tree line.

The vehicle was a 1997 Buick passenger car driven by Trenton Intessimone, 30 of Granby. Mr. Intessimone was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is still under investigation.

Joplin History and Mineral Museum closed next week

The Joplin History & Mineral Museum will be closed from Tuesday, January 2, 2018 through Monday, January 8, 2018 in order for general maintenance and housekeeping chores to be completed. Several areas will also be updated and repainted during this time, and some collections relocated to different spaces in the Museum.

Starting January 9, hours of the museum are: Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located in Schifferdecker Park, 7th and Schifferdecker, and their website can be viewed at www.joplin-museum.org . Joplin man killed in accident in Webb City

(From the Webb City Police Department)

On Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 22:44 hours officers with the Webb City Police Department were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on MacArthur (MO 171) near Powell Drive in Webb City. Upon their arrival they found both drivers as well as two passengers in one vehicle seriously injured.

Investigation at the scene along with witness accounts revealed that a black 2011 Subaru Impreza driven by a 21-year old white male from Joplin was traveling westbound on MacArthur at a high rate of speed when a tan 2009 Honda Pilot driven by a 42-year old white male from Webb City which was eastbound tried to turn north onto Powell Drive and was struck by the Subaru Impreza. Both drivers were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The Honda Pilot was only occupied by the driver. Two passengers, a 21-year old white male from Springfield and Chanler B. Wood (19-year old white male) from Joplin, in the Subaru Impreza were also transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Chanler Wood died of his injuries. Investigation at the scene discovered that neither of the drivers and none of the passengers were wearing seatbelts.

The investigation of this crash is still ongoing. Additional information including the identification of both drivers and the remaining passenger will be made when the investigation has been completed.

We would like to thank the Webb City Fire Department and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wood family in this difficult time.

New Mexico man injured in two-vehicle collision in Jane

A New Mexico man was injured in a two-vehicle collision 6:10 p.m. Wednesday on Route OO in Jane.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2016 Chrysler 300 driven by Sean L. Nix, 44, Bentonville, Arkansas, struck a 2011 Lincoln Continental driven by Clifford W. Tompson, 57, Crystal, New Mexico.

Tompson was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Bentonville, Arkansas.

Overland Park man, former Joplin resident, donates $5,000 to Joplin Arts and Entertainment Center

A gift totaling $5,000 in support of the Joplin Arts & Entertainment Center in downtown Joplin was announced Wednesday, December 27, 11:30 a.m. at George A. Spiva Center for the Arts (222 West 3rd St, Joplin, MO 64801). This generous gift was given by David E. Martin of Overland Park, Kansas.

In reference to his gift, Mr. Martin said, "The Arts are an important measure of a community's vitality. I am fortunate to contribute towards this endeavor. The Arts and Entertainment Center will be a centerpiece for everyone in Joplin and the surrounding Four-States Region. I hope this gift encourages others to offer their support.” Mr. Martin served seven years on the Board of Directors for George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. Now retired, he was Director of Solar & Wind Energy, University of Kansas; Director of Government of Public Affairs, Kansas City Power and Light; and Director of Governmental Affairs, Empire District Electric Company, Joplin, Missouri. Mr. Martin worked 34 years in the energy industry, with eight years in solar and wind energy and 26 years in the electric utility business.

"We are so appreciative of this contribution from Mr. Martin,” said Clifford Wert, President and CFO, Connect2Culture. “Every dollar amount is so important in helping us to ultimately construct this new facility in the heart of Downtown Joplin. No doubt others will indeed be encouraged by this gift to join in!”

“David is a longtime friend of Spiva,” added Josie Mai, Executive Director, George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. “He collects, views, and appreciates art as a way of life. Spiva is thrilled with the news of his donation, and we feel it is very fitting; he puts his money where his mouth and heart is."

This contribution marks the second gift announced jointly by Connect2Culture and George A. Spiva Center for the Arts for funding of the proposed $14 - $16 million Joplin Arts & Entertainment Center. The lead gift of $5 million, given by Harry M. Cornell, Jr., was announced December 14, 2017.

Plans for the Center include a multi-functional 500-seat performing arts venue that presents varied opportunities for usage, an expanded home for George A. Spiva Center for the Arts, and an 1,800 - 2,000 capacity outdoor amphitheater/festival plaza to be located in the present parking lot in front of Memorial Hall. Connect2Culture will operate the 500-seat venue and the festival plaza, while George A. Spiva Center for the Arts will manage and control their venue.

Sarcoxie traffic stop leads to drug arrest for couple; Jasper County deputy finds ecstasy in man's pants

On December 23, 2017 at approximately 10 P.M. two officers from the Sarcoxie Police Department were conducting routine patrol. They observed a green car with a temporary tag turn southbound on 11th Street and High.

The officers began following the vehicle. When the car came to a stop at 11th and Center, the officers attempted to read the temporary tag to verify if it was up to date. However, the driver of the vehicle failed to maintain a good legible condition of the temp tag. The temp tag was crumpled up in a clear plastic sleeve with excessive water residue in the plastic sleeve. The condition of the temp tag prevented either officer from determining what state, the expiration date, and the letters and numbers registered to the temp tag. 

The officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with a female driver, and a male passenger. The officer took both names of the individuals. 

The male passenger had an active warrant out of Webb City. The officers pulled the male out of the vehicle and arrested him on the warrant. 

Upon searching the male, he was found to have excessive amounts of unused dime-sized clear baggies, two purple pills which was later to be determined as ecstasy, approximately $160 in cash, and a small dime-sized baggie which field tested positive for methamphetamine residue. 

The officers had a deputy arrive on scene to assist. They pulled the female out and searched the vehicle. Upon searching the female's vehicle, they found three scales (two of which field tested positive for methamphetamine), five cell phones and an Arm-Sword. However, nothing much else was located in the vehicle. 

Both subjects we're placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Upon arriving at the Jasper County Jail, the female was booked in, and the deputy who transported her went and researched his vehicle. He observed a glass pipe the female had hid away from the Police and kicked underneath the deputy's seat hoping he wouldn't find it. 

The glass pipe field tested positive for methamphetamine. The male subject was strip searched upon arriving at the jail, within the first minute of the search a clear baggie fell out from inside the male's pants. It was later identified as two grams of methamphetamine. Also in the bag was another ecstasy pill (equaling three ecstasy pills). The male and female subject were charged with another charge of delivery/concealment of a controlled substance of any correctional center; city, county, or private jail. Both subjects were booked in early in the morning on December 24.

JPD arrests 21-year-old for threatening to kill father, doing considerable damage to home, shooting gun from his mother's car

Yesterday evening at 9:37 p.m. officers were dispatched to area of 26th and Florida for approximately 10 gunshots (called in by multiple callers).

 The area was extensively searched to the north, east, and, west, where the shots were reported. 

Officers decided to move south to 28th St, when they contacted a male exiting 2510 E 28th, who stated he nothing to do with it, and was told to leave. He said he had secured a handgun in his vehicle. 

While officers were speaking to him, they heard what they believed to be a muffled gunshot within the residence, based on the initial calls they had received. 

As officers surrounded the house and made a plan, the garage door opened, and officers could see an older male and a younger male actively fighting. Officers successfully detained both. The house was entered and cleared. TVs were broken, doors were torn down, or destroyed, and two bedrooms were completely demolished, and there was broken glass everywhere. 

The suspect, a 21-year-old male, had been threatening to kill his father and was destroying the home while officers were outside. The believed gunfire was the suspect banging on doors and walls. 

The suspect was in possession of Valium, about 49 grams of marijuana, and 83 rounds of 9mm ammo. 

The firearm was located in the pickup outside the residence. It's believed the suspect was driving around the area and discharging the firearm from his mother's vehicle, resulting in the initial calls. Austin W Smith, 21, was arrested for numerous charges.

Three Neosho children killed, six other people injured in three-vehicle crash on 86

Three Neosho children were killed and six other people injured in a three-vehicle crash 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on MO 86, two miles east of Stark City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Stephen J Shaffer, 53, Sarcoxie, struck a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Leticia Verde, 32, Neosho, causing it to lose control and cross the center line, where it was struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Michael L. Stephens, 38, Fairview. The Verde vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned.

Benjamin J. Verde, 4, Eric G. Verde, 7, and Isaac O. Verde, 2, all of Neosho, were pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Newton County Coroner Jerry Deems.

Letitia Verde and Stephens were taken to Mercy Hospital, Joplin, with serious injuries.

Two passengers in the Stephens vehicle, Shawna Campbell and Presley Darby, ages unknown, were treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, with Campbell being airlifted.

Two other passengers in the Stephens vehicle, Bentley Stephens, age unknown, and Harley Stephens, 15, were treated for serious injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

The fatalities were the 113th, 114th, and 115th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Missouri Highway Patrol reports five fatalities over the Christmas break

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports five people died in traffic crashes over the Christmas holiday counting period--from 6 p.m. on Friday, December 22, 2017 to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, December 25, 2017. The Patrol investigated 491 traffic crashes, which included 125 injuries and four of the five fatalities. Officers from the Springfield Police Department investigated one of the fatalities. Troopers also arrested 91 people for driving while impaired and made 49 drug arrests over the Christmas holiday. There were no boating crashes. No one drowned over the 2017 Christmas counting period.

During last year’s Christmas holiday counting period, the Patrol investigated 260 traffic crashes, which included 86 injuries and five fatalities. In addition, troopers arrested 68 people for driving while impaired and made 40 drug arrests over the 2016 Christmas holiday. (During the 2016 Christmas holiday counting period, there were 885 traffic crashes statewide, which included five fatalities and 314 injuries.) There were no boating crashes or drownings over the 2016 counting period.

Two of the fatalities occurred in each of the Troop A, Lee's Summit, and Troop D, Springfield, areas; and one fatality occurred in the Troop C, Weldon Spring, area.

No fatalities occurred as a result of traffic crashes on Friday, December 22, 2017.

Three fatalities occurred as a result of traffic crashes on Saturday, December 23, 2017. Teagan E. Birdno, 19, of Carrollton, MO, and Matthew D. Landi, 21, of Carrollton, MO, both died when the vehicle in which they were passengers ran off the roadway, struck an embankment, struck a tree, and then overturned. The crash occurred in Carroll County on Missouri Highway CC east of County Road 261. Neither Birdno nor Landi were wearing seat belts; they were both ejected from the vehicle. Caroll County Coroner Jeff Cohler pronounced both subjects deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle and a third passenger sustained serious and minor injuries, respectively. Neither were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Charles Terbrock, 85, of Foristell, MO, died when the vehicle he was driving slid on the icy roadway of a bridge, struck the concrete bridge rail (passenger side of vehicle), returned to the roadway before striking the guardrail (passenger side) on the opposite side of the roadway, then overturned onto its passenger side. The crash occurred in Lincoln County on U.S. Highway 61 northbound, north of the Lincoln County and St. Charles County line. Terbrock was not wearing a seat belt. Emergency personnel pronounced Terbrock dead at the scene of the crash.

Two fatalities occurred as a result of traffic crashes on December 24, 2017. Steven A. Mayer, 26, of Fair Grove, MO, died after he was struck by a vehicle. Mayer was a pedestrian at the time of the crash, which occurred in Greene County at the intersection of Kansas Expressway and Mount Vernon in Springfield, MO. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash. The Springfield Police Department investigated the crash.

Christopher M. Loch, 38, of Springfield, MO, died after the vehicle he was driving, which had been in a traffic crash and was disabled, was struck by another vehicle. The crash occurred in Lawrence County on Interstate 44 west of Mount Vernon, MO. Loch was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Larry Eden pronounced Loch dead at the scene of the crash.

No fatalities occurred as a result of a traffic crash on December 25, 2017.

20th Street to close at Main for six weeks

Starting this week 20th Street at Main will be closed while the decorative concrete work is being completed within this intersection. This work will take approximately six weeks, allowing three weeks per each side of the street.

Main Street will remain open while this is being done, however there will be lane shifts to reduce the traffic to one lane in each direction at this location. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes if they are on 20thStreet near the area of Main Street. During this time, 20th Street will not have access to Main Street.

The City appreciates your patience during this final phase of the Main Street project.

City of Joplin offices to close Monday, January 1, trash route times changed

In recognition of the New Year’s holidays, the City of Joplin offices will be closed on Monday, January 1.  This closing includes MAPS and the Sunshine Lamp Trolley services.  In addition, the City Council meeting scheduled for the first Monday of the month will be moved to Tuesday, January 2. The Joplin Recycling Center is normally closed on Mondays.

Public Safety services (Police and Fire Departments) and Airport Operations will continue to operate throughout the New Year’s holidays, as these departments run 24/7 throughout the year.

City Hall, MAPS, the Sunshine Lamp Trolley and the Recycling Center will be open and operate during their normal operating hours on Tuesday, January 2.

In addition, during these holiday weeks, residential trash service and curbside recycling will move one day forward. residential trash service moves one day forward. Monday customers will have service on Tuesday and Tuesday customers will have Wednesday pick-up and so on continuing through Saturday for Friday customers.

Joplin murder suspect arrested, second suspect still at large

Moses Ramsey was taken into custody by Joplin police this morning around 9am, at a residence near 21st and Empire, without incident. This arrest was for the murder of Sean Harris on Christmas Eve. Artilius Jordan is still wanted for his warrants related to the murder, and his whereabouts are unknown. This is still an active investigation.

Hit-and-run semi driver injures two Noel residents in rollover accident on I-44

Two Noel residents were injured in a two-vehicle accident 5:45 p.m. Sunday on I-44, four miles west of Mount Vernon.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a tractor-trailer was passing a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Kenneth S. Fisher, 55, Noel, when it traveled into the right lane and struck the vehicle causing it to travel off the right side of the roadway and overturn several times.

The tractor-trailer kept going.

Fisher and a passenger, Josephine Fisher, 42, Noel, were treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Anderson man charged with DWI following fiery rollover crash

An Anderson man was charged with driving while intoxicated following a one-vehicle accident 5:45 a.m. Saturday on Route F in Anderson.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2014 Jeep Rubicon driven by Shaun M. Cornelison, 26, Anderson, ran off the right side of the roadway with the vehicle overturning, ejecting the driver. The vehicle then caught on fire.

Cornelison was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Neosho man injured crashing into unoccupied vehicle

A Neosho man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 7:45 a.m. Saturday on westbound I-44, three miles east of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 Ram 1500 driven by Warren R. Sprague, 32, Neosho, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a 2013 Dodge Charger owned by the City of Duenweg.

Sprague was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Seneca man cited for DWI after crashing into tree

A Seneca man was charged with driving while intoxicated following a one-vehicle accident 2:53 p.m. Saturday on MO 86, five miles west of Neosho.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Tarrell C. Morris, 66, Seneca, ran off the roadway and down a steep embankment striking a tree.

Morris, who was also cited for failure to drive on the right half of the roadway and for not wearing a seat belt, was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Lamar woman injured in accident on I-49

A Lamar woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 4:46 a.m. today on I-49, 17 miles north of Nevada.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Cassondra S. White, 26, Lamar, lost control of a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban on a slick roadway. The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

A passenger, Brandi N. Knouse, 25, Lamar, was treated for minor injuries at Nevada Regional Medical Center.

Joplin Police Department initiates emergency road conditions

Due to the inclement weather, the Joplin Police Department has initiated emergency road conditions. Under these conditions, the department asks all drivers to only venture out if it is absolutely necessary. If you are involved in an accident and no one is injured, the drivers are to exchange information including names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance companies, and policy numbers.

Officers will respond to any accident involving injuries or where one of the drivers leaves the scene without exchanging information.

Drivers who are involved in a non-injury accident during the inclement weather and would like an accident report may come to the Joplin Police Department after the weather conditions improve and complete a form.

Update #1: The suspect in the shooting is identified as Lonnie L. Boyd, 36, Joplin. He is wanted for domestic assault in the first degree and armed criminal action. His location is unknown, we are seeking his arrest. He is said to now have short braided hair.

ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE

On 12-21-2017 at 11:38 p.m. we received a call to 5501 East 32nd, Gastrip, for a shooting. Officers arrived and found a 29-year-old female with a gunshot wound to her hip. She was transported to a local hospital and is in surgery, as of this morning.

The suspect hasn’t been arrested at this time. This is however an isolated incident, and is a case of domestic violence. The investigation continues.

Joplin pedestrian killed in accident north of Carthage

A Joplin pedestrian was struck and killed 9:24 p.m. Thursday on Route V, one mile north of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Dodge 2500 driven by Rodney E. Lillard, 59, Carthage, struck Daven Divine, 31, Joplin, who was in the roadway.

Divine was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Deputy Coroner Sean Woodward.

The fatality was the 110th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

New season of HBO's True Detective to film in Northwest Arkansas

The third installment of the HBO crime anthology “True Detective” created by Nic Pizzolatto and starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will be filmed and produced in Northwest Arkansas, beginning in early 2018.

“We’re thrilled HBO chose to film the series in Arkansas,” said Governor Asa Hutchinson. “This is a testament to the dedicated teamwork across state agencies and communities to position the state as a choice place to do business.

“The beauty of the state, the skilled and quality talent available,” said the governor, “along with the support provided by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, made Northwest Arkansas an easy choice.”

The production will provide work for local actors, extras and production crew, said Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan, whom AEDC officials credit with being incredibly helpful and accommodating during recruitment of the production.

“The cooperation, support and enthusiasm of Governor Hutchison and his team, the AEDC, the mayor and City of Fayetteville, and Christopher Crane of the Arkansas film commission has been extraordinary and instrumental in allowing us to bring the highly anticipated third installment of ‘True Detective’ to Arkansas,” said HBO Executive Vice President of Production Bruce Richmond.

An official synopsis reads, “The next installment of ‘True Detective’ tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.” Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, an Arkansas State Police detective. Carmen Ejogo will play Amelia Reardon, a school teacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980. “True Detective” is created by Nic Pizzolatto.

“This is the largest and most expensive production we’ve ever had in the state,” said AEDC Director Mike Preston. “With an estimated year from start to finish, we know that local businesses and vendors will enjoy a boon from the production.”

Arkansas Parks and Tourism Director Kane Webb said, “As other production companies see the beauty of our state and hear of the benefits to filming in Arkansas, we can expect to land more series and films.”

Joplin woman in surgery following shooting at Gastrip on 32nd

On 12-21-2017 at 11:38 p.m. we received a call to 5501 East 32nd, Gastrip, for a shooting. Officers arrived and found a 29-year-old female with a gunshot wound to her hip. She was transported to a local hospital and is in surgery, as of this morning.

The suspect hasn’t been arrested at this time. This is however an isolated incident, and is a case of domestic violence. The investigation continues.

Weather hazards expected...

  Limited Snow risk.

DISCUSSION...

  Rain will mix with and then change to light snow beginning late
  this evening, mainly along and south of the interstate 44
  corridor. Locations across central Missouri are not expected to
  get much if any rain or snow with this system. Snow accumulations
  are expected to be an inch or less. The ground is warm from the
  recent warm stretch, which will result in the snow mainly
  accumulating on elevated surfaces. A few slushy spots will be
  possible on area roads, but overall impacts are expected to be
  low.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.

  The snow will end Saturday morning with only a dusting expected
  during the morning areas, mainly in areas south of interstate 44.

  There is another chance for snow on Thursday, but much
  uncertainty still exists on timing and amounts.

  Wind chills in the single digits and teens are expected at times
  from late this weekend into the middle of next week.

Joplin Police arrest couple sleeping in stolen car at McDonald's, woman has meth baggie in bra

This morning just before 5 a.m. we were called to McDonald's, 4436 S. 43 Highway, for two people passed out in a vehicle in the drive thru. 

Officers arrived and found a male driver and a female passenger passed out in a 1990 Honda Accord in the drive thru. The female had a spoon and syringe visible in her hand. The male had plastic baggies visible in his hand. Both woke up and discarded those items within the vehicle. The vehicle was found to have been reported stolen in our city yesterday afternoon. 

The 30-year-old Joplin male had just shy of four grams of meth in his seat that he was sitting on. The female had a baggie of meth in a container in her bra. Both were arrested for the stolen vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.

Golden City woman arrested after assaulting boyfriend, three-year-old daughter in moving vehicle

Incident Spotlight

On 12-20-2017 the Barton County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call of a domestic disturbance going on inside a vehicle which was driving westbound on 12th Street in Lamar. 

It was reported that a female passenger in the vehicle was striking a male in the backseat of the vehicle. 

Sheriff Mitchell Shaw observed the vehicle and turned around on it to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle exited off 160 Highway and got onto southbound I-49. 

As Sheriff Shaw was attempting to stop the vehicle the female subject seated in the front passenger seat was actively striking a male subject in the back seat of the vehicle. 

When the vehicle came to a stop the female was removed from the vehicle and placed into handcuffs. Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Arty Torbeck arrived on scene and assisted with the male party. Additional officers with the Lamar Poice Department and deputies of the sheriff's office arrived to assist in the investigation. 

A investigation was conducted into the altercation that took place inside the vehicle. The allegations in the case are that the male party pulled the female's hair and grabbed her arm and the female party struck the male subject. 

At the time of the female striking at the male she struck her three-year-old daughter and caused an injury to her. 

Both parties had been consuming an alcoholic beverage at the time of the altercation. 

At the conclusion of the investigation, a white male, age 38, of Golden City was arrested for domestic assault. A 27-year-old white female from Golden City was arrested on domestic assault charges and endangering the welfare of a child. Both parties were placed on 24-hour holds for investigation. 

The reports will be forwarded over to the Barton County Prosecuting Attorney Steven Kaderly for consideration in filing a formal criminal charges against the two.

Barton County Sheriff seeking help finding Golden City man wanted for failure to pay child support

The Barton County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in looking for a subject which has an active warrant for his arrest out of Barton County.

Jared T. Cofield, age 30, of Golden City is wanted for a warrant for non support or failure to pay child support. The bond is currently set at $1,000.00 cash only.

Joplin Police Department investigates gunshots at Cox and Hill

Yesterday evening at 6:42 p.m. officers responded to the area of Cox and Hill for reported gunshots. 

Officers located spent shell casings in the roadway. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle approach, hearing the shots and seeing the vehicle speed away. 

No damage or injuries were reported.

No serious injuries reported in six-vehicle crash in front of Academy Sports

In reference to the crash in front of Academy Sports earlier, there were 6 vehicles involved. Four were towed from scene. There were no injuries requiring immediate transport, one person was possibly going to hospital by private vehicle.

Traffic congestion is at its peak this time of year, travel safely and take your time, but most importantly, pay attention.

Applications being taken for next Joplin Citizens Police Academy

The Joplin Police Department is proud to announce the upcoming spring session of the Citizens Police Academy. 

The Citizens Police Academy is an exciting 14-week program hosted by the police department. This program targets people in our area who want to learn more about the Joplin Police Department. 

Offered FREE of charge, this hands-on, interactive, behind-the-scenes program is taught by experienced police officers, who share their unique perspective on law enforcement. 

The classes will be held every Thursday evening starting February 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The CPA will conclude on May 3rd with a closing ceremony and dinner. The classes will be held at various locations throughout the City. The class size will be limited to approximately 25 participants.

Topics covered will include: crime scene investigations, narcotics investigations, child abuse investigations, vehicle stops, SWAT operations and equipment, use of force tactics, building clearing, DWI enforcement, an introduction to the K9 unit and much more.
