Roundabout at Connecticut and 44th Street to open next week

(From the City of Joplin)

Christmas is coming early for residents in the southeast part of Joplin. Public Works officials report that the 44th Street and Connecticut Avenue roundabout will open to traffic by the middle of next week, on or around December 3. In addition, the west portion of Richard Joseph Boulevard will also open at that time.

Project construction is shifting to the south side of 44th Street. Travelers should watch for temporary one-day closures for isolated work to complete the project. These will be posted as needed.

The entire project is still an active construction zone, and drivers are encouraged to use caution in the area. Work will continue through the winter months, with final completion scheduled for the spring of 2021.

The project to widen 44th Street, from Connecticut Avenue east to Range Line Road, and Connecticut Avenue from the bridge over Interstate 44, south to 44th Street began in Spring 2019. It includes a five-lane road, with a sidewalk and shared use path, as well as a roundabout at the intersection of 44th and Connecticut Avenue.

This project is funded through the 3/8 cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax approved by voters in 2014. D&E Plumbing Company is the contractor.

The City appreciates the public’s patience during this improvement project. For more information, call 417-624-0820, ext. 543.

Freeman adds cardiothoracic surgeon

(From Freeman Health System)

Freeman Health System is proud to welcome cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Lee. He has performed more than 3,500 open, robotic or minimally invasive surgeries over 25 years.

“As I start my new practice serving patients in the Joplin area, I look forward to the opportunity to continue to make a real difference in people’s lives, to heal the sick and to save lives,” says Dr. Lee. “It’s what I was meant to do.

"Over the last year, I have performed locum cardiothoracic surgery at Freeman. Although I have worked at many world-class institutions in my career, I have found the care here to be as good as, if not better than, many more-recognized institutions. I chose to move my practice here due to the excellent care I can provide and the supportive collegiality of all the physicians, nurses, staff and administration."

Dr. Lee is an advocate for minimally invasive procedures because they cause less trauma to the body, less pain and scarring, and less blood loss, reducing the need for blood transfusions.

“I chose to become a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon because I wanted a career where I could help my fellow man in the most significant way possible,” says Dr. Lee. “I always consider what is best for my patients and work collaboratively with them and their families to ensure they get the best possible care. My primary goal is to help them regain the energy and long-term health they desire.”

A graduate of Cornell University, New York University School of Medicine, UCLA Medical Center and Weill-Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Lee decided in 2011 to advance his skillset even further. He completed advanced clinical fellowships in endovascular surgery in Illinois, a robotic and minimally invasive heart bypass surgery fellowship at University of Maryland, and a robotic and minimally invasive heart valve surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Lee joins the award-winning Freeman Heart & Vascular Institute team which was recognized by the American College of Cardiology NCDR Chest Pain-MI Registry as one of the top 124 hospitals in the nation and by the American Heart Association with the 2020 Mission: Lifeline® NSTEMI Gold Achievement Award.

Dr. Lee was recognized with the Memorial Care Medical Group Excellence award for achieving the highest patient satisfaction ratings. He credits three things with that success.

“Receiving advanced training at Cleveland Clinic was transformative for me,” says Dr. Lee. “I took to heart their motto, ‘Patients First.’ We put our patients first in all that we do.”

Dr. Lee also stresses the importance of selecting the proper procedure for each patient. He says lessons learned in kindergarten can apply to medicine, including the golden rule.

“Treat all your patients as you would want to be treated,” Dr. Lee says. “It’s not the size of the incision that is most important but rather achieving an excellent overall result. If I feel the patient is well-suited to a minimally invasive or endovascular approach, that’s what I suggest to them. If I feel they are better suited for a more traditional procedure, that’s what I recommend to them. I think patients appreciate my thoughtfulness, experience and honesty.”

Lastly, Dr. Lee says before patients care what you know, they need to know that you care. It is something he learned from several mentors.

“I learned the amazing power of patience and touch,” says Dr. Lee. “I always make sure I sit down and talk with my patients daily. I want to answer all their questions and concerns. Being in a hospital is a scary experience, and a few minutes of my time is well worth alleviating any distress for my patients.”

Spiva Art Gallery schedules "Sowing Seeds" exhibit

(From Southern News Service)

The Spiva Art Gallery on the campus of Missouri Southern State University will host “Sowing Seeds,” a collection of artwork from three K-12 art education majors, beginning Nov. 30.

The exhibit, which runs through Dec. 4, features the works of Shelly Marie Muncy, Caitlin Good and Nathan Lee McAlister.

About the artists:

Shelly Marie Muncy tends to focus on three-dimensional sculptural art with emphasis on fibers. She creates art with a visual story, pulling the viewer in to escape the fast-paced reality of today's world.

She plans to develop in each student an interest and ability for creative expression visually – and believes art can remind us to take time to enjoy the small things, while focusing on its true beauty and ability to capture it. She wants her art to provide an avenue to share thoughts, ideas and life journeys. She will graduate in May of 2021.

Caitlin Good utilizes a variety of media to express her connection to the Lord through peacefulness found in nature. After many trips and hiking adventures, she visually expresses her moments of calmness through sunlight, flowers and landscapes in hopes someone may also find life and peace within them. She has a big heart for children and strives to be an influential person in their lives to motivate and encourage them throughout their creative journey. She will graduate next spring following her student teaching semester in Carthage, Missouri.

Nathan Lee McAlister focuses on regional subject matter from the Central United States, using two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. Along with a love for visual art, he travels the Ozarks and Great Plains performing roots music and photographing extreme weather and wildlife. He uses these experiences to frame his body of artistic work, and share those adventures with the viewer. As an educator, he looks forward to using his diverse background to build connections with young artists and help them begin their own artistic adventures in whatever media they choose. He will graduate in December of this year.

Gallery hours are 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Thursday - and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all face-to-face events on MSSU's campus are limited to MSSU faculty, staff and students until further notice.
