Section of 20th Street in Joplin to be closed beginning Monday

(From the City of Joplin)

In preparation for the City’s widening project of West 20th Street, Liberty Utilities will start relocating power poles along this corridor on Monday, February 3.

Work will be done in sections along West 20th Street, starting with the area from Schifferdecker Avenue to Iron Gates Road. During their work, this section of 20th Street will be closed to through traffic during daytime hours.

After completing this first section, Liberty will work from Iron Gates Road to Black Cat Road and then move to the area of Black Cat Road to Central City Road. Depending on weather conditions, this relocation effort could take approximately four to six weeks.

Residents will have access to their homes, and businesses will remain accessible throughout this period.

This project will widen West 20th Street from two lanes to three lanes, make two intersection improvements, add curbs and gutters, and a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists along the entire project.

Emory Sapp and Sons, Inc. is the contractor for this $9.8 million project. Funding is through the Capital Improvement Sales Tax initiative passed in 2014 and renewed by voters in 2024, and is partially funded through the City and Jasper County ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act).

Joplin SWAT called after shots fired, man injured on Markwardt Street

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On Thursday, January 30th, 2025, the Joplin Emergency Communications Center began receiving 911 calls about a disturbance with a weapon at 2822 E Markwardt Street in Joplin.

In addition to the calls about the disturbance, some callers reported hearing at least two gunshots and possibly one coming from inside the residence.

When officers arrived, they contacted an adult male walking out of the residence who appeared to be suffering injuries. That adult male reported that he had been assaulted by another male at that location and confirmed that a firearm had been involved in the altercation.

Additional information was obtained that the suspect and possibly three other people were still inside the residence. The male subject that was initially contacted was transported to a local hospital with non-life threating injuries and officers on scene attempted to make contact with anyone inside the residence.

After numerous attempts were made to contact the remaining people inside the residence, Joplin SWAT responded due to the reports of gunshots and the nature of the incident.

Detectives with the Joplin Police Department obtained a search warrant for the residence. Following the execution of the search warrant, no persons were located inside the residence. At this time, the Joplin Police Department does not believe there is a threat to the public and this was an isolated event.

The investigation continues and anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call the Joplin Police Department at 417-623-3131 extension: 1442.

St. Louis Avenue closure reopens, portion of South Connecticut to close

(From the City of Joplin)

Starting Wednesday, January 29, South Connecticut Avenue from East Campbell Parkway to East 8th Street will be closed as stormwater work progresses in this area. This closure allows for installing a box culvert in the railroad right of way near 9th Street.

The St. Louis Avenue closure is now open, allowing full access along this main corridor.

Drivers may not be affected by this new closure on Connecticut Avenue and 9th Street because Connecticut Avenue shifts northwest at Campbell Parkway and merges with St. Louis Avenue, which carries the bulk of traffic traveling north.

Weather permitting, the work should be completed by February 17. Detours for southbound and northbound traffic will direct drivers to St. Louis Avenue.

Please use caution in these work areas. The City appreciates your patience as the improvements are made.

Newton County Sheriff's Office corporal receives award for saving prisoner's life

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

Corporal Hope Birkinsha responded to a medical emergency in the jail. An inmate lost consciousness and was not breathing so Corporal Birkinsha administered Narcan.

The inmate regained consciousness, began breathing and communicating with corrections officers. The inmate then lost consciousness and stopped breathing.

Corporal Birkinsha administered Narcan again, forcing the inmate to regain consciousness and begin breathing. Corrections officers continued medical assistance to keep the inmate conscious until EMS arrived and transported the inmate to the hospital.

While at the hospital, the hospital staff managed to revive them by administering overdose medication.
It is evident the inmate would have suffered a fatal overdose incident had it not been for the actions of the correction officers involved, particularly Corporal Birkinsha’s direct contribution.
