Fundraisers scheduled, Go Fund Me established for baby with rare genetic disorder

Three fundraisers are scheduled and Go Fund Me page established to help a baby with a rare genetic disorder.

On February 24th, at 8 days old Amias had to go to Children's Mercy in Kansas City for some tests. They had to wait up there for the results and he was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency(SCID) aka Bubble Boy Disease and immediately admitted. At this time we are still looking at different treatment options and there is a possibility he may be transferred out of state.

SCID is a rare genetic disorder that affects the development of T cells and B cells in the blood and is caused by genetic mutations. His T cell count is ZERO and B cells count was almost as low which means he virtually has no Immune system and must remain in strict quarantine.

Something as simple as the common cold can be life threatening for him and he will spend months, possibly a couple years, in the hospital without going home. He then will periodically need to go back to the place of treatment for checkups and testing. This all depends on how well treatment goes for him.

He has a 5 year old cousin that also has the same condition and received a trial treatment In Memphis that was very successful for him. but unfortunately, the trial has ended.

Jasper County Children's Services Fund sales tax proposal topic on Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

On April 8th, Jasper County voters will be asked to support a quarter cent sales tax to create a Children’s Services Fund. A Missouri law, passed nearly 30 years ago, allows for counties to establish a fund through a voter approved tax for the purpose of services to protect the well-being and safety of children. A group called Jasper County 4 Kids worked to put the question on the ballot and discusses details of the initiative on the next Newsmakers program.

Jasper County 4 Kids volunteer, Terry Wachter says conditions for children in the county have declined. The Annie E. Casey Foundation Kids Count which analyzes data, ranked Jasper County 98th out of 114 counties in the state.

Jen Black with the Alliance of Southwest Missouri, Stephanie Thies, with Children’s Haven and Betsy Mense, with the Children’s Center explained how they are funded by donations and grants which can be unreliable. All say there are rising rates of youth with mental health issues that need to be addressed. Charities and agencies could apply to a board that would be established for grants from the fund estimated to generate five million dollars annually. The program shares how funds can and cannot be spent.

Ashley Micklethwaite with Jasper County 4 Kids described the impact of the Children’s Services Fund in counties where voters have passed the tax. And Sheriff Randee Kaiser explains how the Jasper County Law Enforcement Sales Tax collections and disbursements operate successfully in a similar way to the Children’s Services Fund proposed.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of March 30 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS-TV programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.

Mercy Columbus administrator chosen to participate in prestigious leadership program

(From Mercy)

Mercy Hospital Columbus Administrator Angie Saporito has been chosen to participate in one of the longest-running and most prestigious leadership programs in Kansas.

Saporito is one of only 40 people selected from a field of more than 500 people nominated anonymously to be a part of Leadership Kansas, a program established in 1979 by the Kansas Chamber Education Foundation that is now supported and administered by the Kansas Chamber. The program, with more than 1,600 alumni, is entering its fifth decade of educating and motivating Kansas leaders from across the state.

“It’s truly an honor to be chosen for this amazing program,” Saporito said. “I’m excited to travel around the state and get to know other leaders from different communities, but also to tell people about all of the exciting things going on within Mercy – especially at Mercy Columbus.”

The 2025 Leadership Kansas program runs from April to November and includes visits to Dodge City, Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Leavenworth, Manhattan, Pittsburg, Salina, Topeka and Wichita.

The class will interact with a variety of experts and community leaders through three-day educational training sessions. The diverse discussion topics include business, education, agriculture, public policy, societal health, economic development and government.

“Leadership Kansas is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Leadership Kansas Executive Director Aaron Miller, a 2016 alumnus of the program. “Participants meet many of Kansas’ distinguished business and government leaders and become stronger leaders themselves, better prepared to contribute to their communities and our state.”

Saporito has been administrator of Mercy Hospital Columbus since February 2016. She joined Mercy Joplin in 2006 as a member of the marketing team. From there, she joined Mercy Columbus and provided support and oversight for areas including human resources, payroll, accounts payable, purchasing and marketing.

In 2012, Saporito led Mercy Joplin’s media relations during the tornado recovery and rebuilding efforts. Saporito earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. She and her husband have three boys and are actively involved in community, school and sports activities in their hometown of Columbus.
