(From the City of Joplin)
Joplin’s Christmas Parade is Tuesday, December 1, and Main Street from 15th Street to 26th Street will be closed in the late afternoon for staging the 100-plus entries in the event.
Because of this street closure, the Red Route Sunshine Lamp Trolley stops located at 15th, 20th, and 26th Streets will be moved during the 5 o’clock hour. Please note the following changes:
• 15th Street stop will be located on the north side of the intersection in front of Dixie Printing;
• Trolley stops located at the Main Street intersections at 20th and 26th Streets will be moved to the west, and the stops will be set up on Joplin Street.
• The Green Route Trolley Stop at 25th will be moved to Virginia Street during the 4 o’clock hour;
• The Green Route will end at 32nd and Main at 6:05 p.m.
If you have questions about these temporary changes, contact the Sunshine Lamp Trolley at 417-626-8609.

Alliance of SWMO to give $1,800 to Joplin Youth Basketball Association
(From the Alliance of SWMO)
The Alliance of SWMO will present a check for $1,800 to Joplin’s Youth Basketball Association on Tuesday, December 1.
The presentation will take place during half time at the Joplin Girls Basketball Team’s home game at Joplin High School. The check presentation should be at roughly around 5: p.m.
“To be able to present this check to the association is such an honor. These kids are our area’s future high school athletes. It is important that they have the tools and equipment to learn their sport while they are young” said Kevin Theilen, presenter of the check and The Alliance’s Safe Kids/Safe Teens Coordinator.
The Alliance helped to purchase $1,800 worth of equipment and other various needs for the basketball team. This was made possible through The Alliance’s Full Potential program, which offers assistance with registration fees and equipment for most youth sports. The program strives to give every child who wishes to participate in youth sports the opportunity.
“We are very excited to have partnered with The Alliance in helping to keep our children active” said director, Greg Goad. The Joplin Youth Basketball Association exists to help keep children active and healthy.
The Alliance is dedicated in making the four-states a safer, healthier community. The Alliance is happy to sponsor the 2015-2016 Youth Basketball Association and its team.

Nancy Hughes devotion: R-rated
Key Scripture:
“If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left. . .” Hebrews 10:26 (NIV)
Devotion:
It was one of those moments that, years later, still makes me shake my head and smile.
Noah and Lola, both 4 years old, were having a heavy conversation over a lunch of mac ‘n cheese and chocolate milk.
“Noah, when I’m 10, I’m going to see an R-rated movie,” Lola informed him.
Noah immediately answered. “You can’t see an R-rated movie. If you do you will go to “hail,” Lola.”
But she shook her head “Yes I CAN see an R-rated movie. I won’t go to “hail” if I do.” Noah totally disagreed. “Yes, you will, Lola. You will go straight to “hail” if you see one.”
The conversation went back and forth for several minutes.
Finally Lola sighed and raised up both her hands. “Okay, fine. I’ll go see an R-rated movie and then after it’s over, I’ll ask God to forgive me.” Mercy.
Obviously, at 4 years of age, Lola had no concept of Hebrews 10:12 – our Key Scripture for today. But evidently she had heard a conversation somewhere about doing something you should not be doing and THEN asking God to forgive you.
So what does it mean to “deliberately keep on sinning”? I believe it comes down to this: knowing the clear commands of Scripture but choosing to ignore them and do what we want to do instead. Not confessing but continuing our sin; not battling against it but willingly surrendering to it day after day.
For example, do we focus on loving money to the point that every day is filled with how to obtain more and more wealth? We are told in I Timothy 6:10 that the love of money only leads to all kinds of evil. We know that. But yet we continue holding it up as our god.
Or perhaps we are in a relationship outside of our marriage. We know that we are clearly warned in I Corinthians 6:18 to run from sexual immorality and yet we ignore the word of God and continue in our sin.
Before you say “Yes, but no one is perfect! We all sin!” I completely agree. We all mess up. But as Christians, we know our trust and faith are in the only One who died for us and who promises forgiveness when we confess our sins to Him.
Jesus became the Ultimate Sacrifice for our sins with His death on the cross. Resolve today, not to deliberately keep on sinning but to deliberately keep on turning to Him for forgiveness and renewal.
My Prayer for Today:
Father, thank you for your grace and forgiveness. I do not want to ever deliberately sin against you. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Reflection:
Can you recall a time in your life when you knew you were deliberately sinning but you didn’t repent?
Application:
Journal anything in your life that you think might be “deliberate sin.” Read through the Word and write Scripture verses that speak to each entry. Ask the Lord to forgive you and help you begin anew by His grace and mercy.
Power Verses:
Hebrews 10:26 (NIV) “If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left. . .”
II Peter 2:21 (NIV) “It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.”
Ephesians 2:8 (NIV) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God . . .”

Lego masterpieces to be created during MSSU gallery event
(From Southern News Service)
“Masterpiece in a Day: LegoLand” will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.
Open to all ages, participants will design a plan for their creation and then be given a set amount of time to bring it to life with Legos. Once the projects are completed, judges will determine who has created the best “masterpiece.” Prizes will be awarded.
“We wanted to find a way to get families and kids into the gallery,” said Christine Bentley, associate professor of art and gallery director. “I was watching a documentary about Legos on Netflix and thought a competition would be fun.”
Bentley contacted Lego about the event and the company donated the building bricks for use during the competition.
There is a $5 fee to participate, and about 30 spots will be open. To RSVP, email Bentley at Bentley-C@mssu.edu by Thursday, Dec. 3.

Attorney general warns of fake IRS calls in 417 area
(From Attorney General Chris Koster)
Attorney General Chris Koster today warned Missouri consumers of a possible telephone scam in which the caller pretends to be from the Internal Revenue Service and requests immediate payment. The Attorney General’s Office has received approximately 200 telephone calls today from consumers in the 417 area code in and around Springfield, Missouri, regarding these fake calls.
Consumers indicated they either received a live caller or a message indicating the caller is from the IRS, there is a pending lawsuit against the consumer for back taxes, and the consumer will be arrested or face further legal action if he or she does not pay immediately. Alternatively, some consumers reported receiving calls promising them a tax refund that could be paid only after giving the caller the consumer’s banking or other financial information. The threat of legal action or arrest and the refund promise are both fake, designed to extract the consumer’s private information to be exploited by the caller.
Koster warns consumers that the IRS does not:
- Call taxpayers to demand immediate payment.Nor will the IRS call about taxes owed without first mailing the taxpayer a bill.
- Demand payment of taxes without giving the taxpayer an opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.
- Threaten to have local police or other law enforcement arrest individuals for non-payment of taxes.
If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, the Attorney General’s Office recommends:
- If you know you do not owe federal taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, or TIGTA, at 800-366-4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
- If you know you owe federal taxes or think you might owe them, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to talk about payment options.
- If you believe you have been the target or victim of a phone scam, contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-392-8222 or file a complaint online.
MSSU international students prepare for Thanksgiving
(From Southern News Service)
All over America, students look forward to returning home to see family members, relax and enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.
For 22-year-old Sun Pei Hsuan, a senior taking classes in International Business at Missouri Southern State University, Thanksgiving will be something new.
“I am happy to spend Thanksgiving in America because it is a traditional holiday,” says Sun (who also goes by “Alina”). “I have only seen Thanksgiving in movies. I am here because I want to experience American culture and want to learn more about things like Thanksgiving.”
Sun arrived in America for the first time in August. Her home is Kaohsiung City in Taiwan, an island about 180 kilometers east of mainland China. She attended Providence University, a Roman Catholic university in Taiwan about twice the size of Missouri Southern.
This year, she plans to enjoy Thanksgiving at the home of Kelly and Cheryl Holyfield of Joplin, the “friendship family” of her friend Jenny Krüger, a Missouri Southern student from Bremen, Germany.
Friendship families provide a home-like atmosphere for international students on a volunteer basis.
“We hope most of our international students will spend the holiday with their friendship families,” says Laura Zaidarhzauva, international admissions coordinator at Missouri Southern. “The families are people interested in working with international students. In most cases, they have an understanding of what it’s like to be overseas. They may have spent time themselves as students in another country or worked abroad.”
Cheryl Holyfield says her family also offered to host students who didn't have holiday plans last year.
“We ended up having four internationals who spent the day with us,” she says. “We had a great time meeting them and celebrating Thanksgiving.”
Holyfield says she invited Krüger to come to this year’s Thanksgiving dinner and bring any of her friends who don’t have plans.
“I don’t know how many students we will have this year yet, but it is always enjoyable to get to know them,” she says.
Sun admits that most of what she knows about Thanksgiving up to now has come from what she has learned in school or seen in the movies.
“I know there is a lot of turkey, a lot of families coming together to celebrate,” she says.
She says the closest thing to something like Thanksgiving in Taiwan would be the celebration of the Lunar New Year.
“We celebrate on December 31,” she says. “Everyone will ring in the year with lots of food and celebration.”
She says dumplings are usually on every table, as well as potatoes and a meat dish. Broccoli is prepared and served to symbolize prosperity, a Taiwanese custom.
Sun plans to return to Taiwan either at the end of the year or, possibly, in May if she finds an internship for the spring. After she returns home, she will do what graduating seniors do all over the world.
“I need to work,” she says with a laugh. “Definitely, I will need to find a job.”

Joplin leaf pickup program begins November 30
(From the City of Joplin)
The City of Joplin will begin the annual leaf pick up program on Monday, November 30. To address all areas of Joplin, the City utilizes two crews which start in outlying areas and work their way toward the center of Joplin.
A crew from the Street Department will start in the northeast section of town (Royal Heights/College View Addition areas) and another crew will start in the Silver Creek/Highlands/Woodland Hills area. The Parks Department crew will start south of 32nd Street and west of Main Street. Crews will work toward the middle of town to complete the program. Weather permitting, this collection could take over one month.
Residents are reminded not to bag their leaves, but rather rake them to the curb. No tree limbs, brush or rocks should be included in the piles, please. The City asks that residents DO NOT rake leaves into the street, as they may clog the storm drains, and it could cause the City’s street sweeping truck to bypass that area. Please do not place leaf piles over water meters (manhole covers). Doing so may cause Missouri-American Water to estimate your water usage, instead of recording the exact amount for billing purposes.
For residents who wish to dispose of leaves now, bring them to the Joplin Compost Facility next to the Turkey Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant at 3457 Eddy Lane, which is west of the intersection of Eddy and North Peace Church Avenue. No brush, tree limbs, bags, or trash, please.
An alternative to leaf disposal is home composting. To create compost, simply put leaves, grass, and meat-free kitchen scraps in your compost bin. Keep it moist, and stir the mixture to speed up the decomposition process, and then harvest the finished compost from the bottom of the bin. Finished compost should be available in approximately two seasons and produces a free organic fertilizer.
Mary Anne Phillips, the City’s Recycling Coordinator, encourages the use of compost instead of non-organic fertilizers and chemicals on lawns and gardens. Compost can be tilled into the soil thus making the plants healthy and less susceptible to diseases and insects, which reduces the need for chemicals. Run off of chemical based fertilizers and pesticides can harm our water bodies.
The easiest alternative to leaf disposal is to rake the leaves onto the lawn and run over them with a mulching lawnmower!
Not-so-earth-friendly alternatives for leaf disposal include setting out bagged leaves for the regular weekly trash service or burning the leaves. In order to burn, citizens need to obtain a Burn Permit from any of the Fire Stations in the City or at the City’s Finance Department at City Hall. The permit costs $5 and is good for three consecutive days.
The Permits are available at the Fire Stations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven day per week. Please note there may be times when firefighters are not at the station to issue permits, due to the nature of their job. Fire Stations will only be able to accept payment by check or money order.
The Finance Department, located on the third floor of City Hall, 602 South Main, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The City Hall location will accept cash, check, debit, money order, or credit card payments for burn permits. Please note that City Hall will be closed November 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
No matter where the permit is obtained, residents must still inquire with the Joplin Fire Department about weather conditions and if burning is allowed on each day. Residents can obtain this information by calling 623-0403.
For more information about leaf pick-up call 624-0820 Ext. 501, or the Parks Department at 624-6937. For more information about burn permits and rules, contact the Joplin Fire Department at 623-0403, go to www.joplinmofire.org, or call the Finance Department at 624-0820 Extension 241.

Nancy Hughes devotional: The Bitterness Root
Key Scripture:
“See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” Hebrews 12:15 (NIV)
Devotion:
She didn’t realize that I happened to turn and look back at her at the exact moment that she was making fun of me, but I did. And it hurt.
I was leading music for a church service and had some ideas about making the worship time a bit livelier. I had suggested a couple of changes and hoped that my enthusiasm would transfer to the entire group of singers and musicians.
But when I glanced back at a member of my team, she was laughing and mimicking my encouragement in a high-pitched voice while she walked in a swaggering gait toward the other members.
I quickly turned away but my heart sank. Immediately I began to question myself: Did I appear like that to the other members of our worship team? Did they think the same thing about me? Although I didn’t see it, were they secretly laughing at my attempt to lead the team? Did I look and sound foolish?
My thoughts switched to her. Why did she make fun of me like that? Did she mean it as a joke or was there another reason?
Then something started to build from deep within: the hurt and humiliation I felt were immediately fueled by anger that a sister in Christ would treat another in that way. And a tiny seed of bitterness began to grow in my heart.
Oh how I wish I could tell you that I immediately forgave her and everything was fine. But that would not be the truth. I could have forgiven her immediately, but honestly, I just didn’t want to. Instead, every time I saw her I felt the bitterness root dig a little deeper in my heart as it crowded out the mercy, grace and forgiveness that the Lord had extended to me.
Today’s Key Scripture in Hebrews 12:15 says “See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”
I had done exactly what the writer of Hebrews had warned me NOT to do. I allowed that bitter root to grow AND I had watered it with my attitude of “She doesn’t deserve to be forgiven!” I had completely forgotten that I do not deserve God’s forgiveness or His mercy and grace that He has extended to me.
It was months before I acknowledged that I could no longer carry the weight of bitterness and unforgiveness and I allowed the Lord full control of my heart.
Was it painful? Yes. Pulling that root of bitterness out of my heart took strength that could only come from the Lord.
I forgave and the Lord forgave me. I extended grace and received grace from my Father. Take that, bitter root!
My Prayer for Today:
Father, help me to forgive and offer grace, as you have done for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Reflection:
Has there ever been a time when someone hurt you and you felt you just could not forgive her for what she did or said?
Application:
Meditate on today’s power verses and ask the Lord to give you an attitude of forgiveness and grace as you choose to forgive today.
Power Verses:
Hebrews 12:15 (NIV) “See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”
Colossians 3:13 (NIV) “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 (NIV) “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.”
