Greenfield man injured in crash near Lamar
A Greenfield man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 10:38 a.m. Thursday on Route T, six miles southeast of Lamar.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Glenn A. Trent, 56, Greenfield, went off the roadway and overturned.
Trent was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Jasper man injured after colliding with wrecked car in roadway
A Jasper man was injured in a two-vehicle collision 2:30 a.m. today on MO 171, one mile east of Carterville.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1999 Ford F-150 driven by Jose Carreto Luayes, 44, Carthage, had been involved in a crash and was stranded in the roadway when it was struck by a 2006 Toyota Sienna driven by Paul A. Bruffett, 81, Jasper.
The Bruffett vehicle partially ran off the roadway.
Bruffett was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2007 Honda Civic driven by Benjamin A. Holliday, 29, Jasper, lost control on an ice-covered roadway, ran off the south side of the road and struck a driveway entrance, continued across the roadway and struck a ditch.
Holliday was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Clinic, Carthage.

Joplin trash service pushed back one day due to icy road conditions

Republic Services, the Joplin residential trash and curbside recycling provider, was not able to pick up the trash on Thursday, February 28 due to icy road conditions on residential streets and alleys.
Because of this, Republic will be running a day behind for the remainder of this week. Thursday customers will have service on Friday, and Friday service moves to Saturday.
“Safety is a top priority, said Mary Anne Phillips, Joplin Recycling Coordinator. “Pedestrians and motorists are reminded that heavy trash trucks have difficulty stopping on icy and snow-covered roads and alleys. We appreciate residents’ patience and understanding as we work through these challenging weather conditions.”
When services are delayed due to the weather, it is announced on local media stations and posted on the City’s social media sites. For questions about trash and curbside recycling, call the Recycling Coordinator at 417-624-0820, extension 1501.

If you could improve bus service in the Joplin area, what would you do? The City of Joplin is kicking off the Joplin Transit Service Analysis to uncover the answers.
If you could improve bus service in the Joplin area, what would you do? The City of Joplin is kicking off the Joplin Transit Service Analysis to uncover the answers.
The effort will involve a detailed review of existing services, development of a community-inspired vision for the future, and a series of improvement alternatives for the Sunshine Lamp Trolley/Metro Area Public Transit System (MAPS). The process begins this month with stakeholder meetings and will continue through year’s end.
The Joplin Transit Service Analysis will be a complete review of our public transportation system. It will consider trends, emergency needs, what generates a transit trip, and much more.

Specifically, we will analyze existing and future ridership, develop service plans, examine funding sources, and analyze the City’s ability to compete for funds available at the state and local levels. The effort will result in a descriptive path forward for transitioning from current service to new or revised service. It will also guide and inform the City’s future long-range transportation plans and prioritize transit system changes and investments.
Because public involvement is very important to the success of the project, City officials and study team members are planning to meet with individuals and groups on Monday, March 11 through Wednesday, March 13. Meetings with representatives from the following perspectives are included: health, elderly residents, employers, employment agencies, staff and officials from the City and nearby communities, transit riders, health and residential care centers, hotels, and others. We will combine what we learn from stakeholders with technical analysis to identify key challenges and opportunities for the transit system.
This spring we will schedule a public meeting and make an opinion survey available, so community members can help us shape a detailed transit vision. During the summer, we will develop recommendations for a series of transit improvement alternatives that will help bring the vision to reality. Some of the alternatives will be long-, medium-, and short-term but all will address costs and financial resources. The Analysis Team will share them with the public near the end of 2019.
The City is developing the transit service analysis to ensure that the bus system provides efficient service and meets the needs of community members. Today, Sunshine Lamp Trolley provides three routes: Red, Blue, and Green. Riders are able to get on and off at designated bus stops along the routes. They also have the option of scheduling a “deviated” pick-up or drop-off at a location within ¾-mile from the trolley route. Deviated stops can be scheduled with at least a one-hour advanced notice.
The MAPS system works with the trolley, providing curb-to-curb bus service on a pre-scheduled basis to residents of the greater Joplin metropolitan area. Residents schedule rides to pick them up from and take them to any destination within the MAPS operating boundaries. MAPS service is available in Joplin, Carl Junction, Carterville, Webb City, Duenweg, Airport Drive, and adjacent rural areas.

Joplin man arrested for smoking meth in Cherokee County Sheriff's parking lot
Around 2:30 this morning, a Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputy was at the Sheriff's Office in Columbus consulting with communications officers about weather and road conditions.
On the facility surveillance cameras, they observed a man and woman pull into the parking lot.
The man remained with the car while the woman entered the facility to inquire about posting bond for an inmate.
While the deputy continued to view the surveillance camera, the man then appeared to start smoking drugs.
The deputy approached the man, identified as Christoper Hill, who was found to be in possession of a considerable amount of methamphetamine along with drug paraphernalia.
Hill, 25 of Joplin, was placed under arrest in lieu of $15,000 bond, on suspicion of Possessing Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute, Possessing Methamphetamine and Possessing Drug Paraphernalia.
“This is certainly a situation which can be used to demonstrate the damage done by using methamphetamine, which clearly results in a diminished ability to think rationally,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.
The woman who was with Hill was not arrested and decided not to post either mans bond at that time.

Joplin Police: Human trafficking poster requirements take effect Friday

The state of Missouri has a new law that will affect local business. Missouri Human Trafficking Poster law which requires certain businesses to display the state’s STOP Human Trafficking Poster by March 1, 2019. The new law resulted in a new violation in the State of Missouri Charge Code Manual.
Missouri Human Trafficking Poster Requirement Takes Effect March 1, 2019
The new law is section 595.120 of the Revised Missouri Statutes. As of Aug. 28, 2018, there is now a violation listed as “Owner/operator failed to post human trafficking hotline number” in the State of Missouri Charge Code Manual.
The violation is related to HB 1246, which was approved in 2018. The law requires that Missouri DPS create a human trafficking poster and make it available to the public. This is the extent of the responsibilities assigned to DPS under the new law.

* Urgent care centers;

Prominent author, lawyer, professor to speak at Thomas Jefferson
Nadine Strossen, one of the most influential women in constitutional law, civil liberties, and international human rights, will visit TJ on March 7 as part of the Steven McCollum Distinguished Speakers Series.
She will talk with TJ Upper School students during the day, and then talk with parents, faculty, and the community during a presentation at 6:30 p.m. in the TJ Concert Hall.
Her latest book, Hate: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship, has received rave reviews, and copies will be available at a book signing event after the presentation. There is no charge for this event, and copies of Strossen’s book will be available for purchase at a book-signing event.
An accomplished lawyer, author, and professor (read her NYU Law School bio here), Strossen has received countless awards for leading the fight for free speech and women’s rights. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard, and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.
After practicing law for nine years, she became a professor at New York Law School, and from 1991 to 2008, Strossen served as the first woman and youngest person ever to serve as the ACLU’s president.
Twice named one of “The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal, Strossen draws from her two decades as president of the American Civil Liberties Union and current post as professor at New York University law school to highlight the dangers that follow efforts to serve justice by limiting civil rights.

Neosho, MO - The Crowder College Agriculture department became the beneficiary of an Angus calf that will be sold at 11 am, Wednesday, April 3rd, at the Joplin Regional Stockyards.
This is the sixth year the Newton-McDonald County Cattlemen’s Association has joined forces with the Crowder Aggies to sell a calf.
This year’s calf is a purebred Limousin donated by Flying E Ranch, Gary and Linda Emmert. Other community sponsors contributing to the success of this auction include: Joplin Regional Stockyards, Animal Clinic of Diamond, Liberty Utilities - Empire District Electric, New Mac Electric, Hunke Spraying, Tatum Motor Company-Mahindra Tractors, B&M Tire, FarmTalk, CornerStone Bank, Haggard Excavation LLC, Fred Harris-State Farm Insurance, Purina, Opal Foods, and many individuals.
The calf will be auctioned multiple times with the final buyer taking the calf home to show or add to their herd. Donations will be tax-deductible through the Crowder College Foundation.

Miami resident robbed at gunpoint, $60, gun stolen
On 2-26-19 at approximately 0430, officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of 10th Ave NW in reference to a robbery.
A resident in the area was going to work and as he went to get in his vehicle he was confronted in his driveway by a man carrying a gun.
The suspect held him at gunpoint and ordered the victim to go into his house. Inside the house, the suspect took approximately $60 and a Glock pistol from the victim.
The suspect then fled the scene in an unknown direction of travel. Anyone with information on this incident please contact the Miami Police Dept. Detective David Wright .

If you were called by a person claiming this, guess what? Yep, it’s a scam.
They may make claims that if you don’t provide information, such as your social security number or other private info, a warrant will be issued. Guess what? They can’t issue warrants!
We appreciate folks letting us know they were called, however we are well aware this is going around. Thank you too all that called in today.

Arrest of Joplin Honky leads to Jeffery Flener being named JPD Officer of the Month

Officer Jeffery Flener
On 01/30/19 at approximately 0315 hours Officer Flener was patrolling the 500 Block of Moffett when he located what appeared to be a burglary in progress.
Officer Flener tried to contact the vehicle's occupants and they took off at a high rate of speed. This initiated a pursuit that went into Kansas, down into Oklahoma and then back almost to Joplin.
Because of Officer Flener’s due diligence in investigating this incident the suspect driver, a known Joplin Honky, and the passenger, also a known criminal, were taken into custody for $210,000 worth of warrants out of Jasper and Newton County’s along with felony resisting charges on the driver for causing the pursuit.
Officer Flener is always happy to be at work and is always willing to help out who ever he is working with. Officer Flener is a very proactive officer that will put in extra work to make sure that whatever he is working on is done to the best of his ability.
Officer Flener is a very dedicated officer that is a great asset to the Midnight Patrol Team.
Thank you Officer Flener for you service to the community, agency, and fellow officers. You are an asset to the Joplin Police Department.

A Neosho woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 6:20 a.m. today on MO 43, three miles north of Southwest City.

Joplin High School ROTC planning events to observe 100th anniversary

To honor this momentous occasion the Joplin cadets are celebrating with a day full of events at the Joplin High School on March 30th beginning with a military parade at 10:00 am, a program open house at 12:00 pm, and a formal catered banquet at 6:00 pm.
The Joplin JROTC cadets and alumni urge the Southwest Missouri community to share in the historic anniversary.
The parade and open house are free events designed to inform and encourage support for the JROTC program and will feature military vehicles and historic displays.
The banquet is a ticketed event open to the public with all proceeds directly benefiting the continuation of the program.

The Social Sciences Department at Missouri Southern State University will host the annual Region 6 History Day on Friday, March 8.
The 2019 event will find students considering the theme of “Triumph & Tragedy in History.”
More than 290 entries have been received for this year’s event from students in area high schools, junior highs and middle schools. Those entries include papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries.
Students in grades six through eight will compete in the Junior Division; grades nine through 12 in the Senior Division. Judges will include Missouri Southern faculty as well as community volunteers with a special interest in history.
Participating schools include College Heights Christian School, Seneca Junior High, Neosho Junior High, White Rock Elementary School, Nevada Middle School, North Middle School, Neosho Middle School, McAuley High School, Neosho Christian School, Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, Wheaton High School, East Middle School, Carthage Junior High, Webb City Junior High, Carthage High School, Seneca High School, Webb City High School, South Middle School, Neosho High School, Joplin High School and area home schools.
Judging will begin at 9 a.m. and will be completed for most categories by noon. The public is invited to view exhibits on display in Connor Ballroom on the third floor of Billingsly Student Center. Performances and documentaries will be presented on the second floor of Webster Hall.
An awards ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

Joplin woman injured in collision on 43
A Joplin woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident 6:10 p.m. Monday on Mo 43, one mile south of Joplin.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Kia Optima driven by Teresa R. Bresee, 57, Joplin, failed to yield while making a left turn and pulled into the path of a 1994 Ford Thunderbird driven by Kelsi N. Powell, 16, Joplin.
Bresee was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Resurfacing of I-44 in Jasper, Newton counties to cause lane closings, traffic delays

Drivers can expect nighttime lane closings and occasional traffic delays when a project to resurface Interstate 44 in Jasper and Newton counties begins the week of March 4, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
I-44 will receive a new asphalt driving surface and new guardrail in areas between Range Line Road (Loop 44) in Joplin and a point east of Missouri Route 37 in Sarcoxie.
Crews will work at night between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction at all times. All lanes of traffic will be open during daytime hours. Drivers also can expect occasional nighttime ramp closings during guardrail work.
Signs and message boards will alert drivers to the work zone. Drivers can expect bright lights, workers and equipment close to traffic where crews are set up to work. Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution.
Weather and/or scheduling delays will alter the work schedule.

Completion Date: September 30, 2019
Construction Cost: $8.8 million

Five people, including Neosho residents, injured in crash on 60
Five people were injured in a two-vehicle accident 5:12 p.m. Sunday on U. S. 60, five miles west of Neosho.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2010 Dodge Caliber driven by Crystal C. Fletcher, 21, Neosho, failed to yield and struck a 2005 Ford F-150 driven by Carlos Garcia Martinez, 36, Eucha, Oklahoma, causing both vehicles to travel off the north side of the roadway.
Fletcher and a passenger, Jennifer M. Fletcher, 17, Neosho, were treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Deer causes accident injuring Webb City man
A Webb City man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 5:51 a.m. today on Ivy Road, one half mile west or Oronogo.
According to the Highway Patrol report, Bradyn O. Ansley, 21, Webb City, driving a 2010 Honda Civic, swerved to miss a deer, traveled off the road, overturned and struck a fence.
Ansley was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
