Neosho Police Officer of the Year – Officer Shadrack Scheppert

The Neosho Police Department is proud to recognize Officer Scheppert as our 2024 Police Officer of the Year. This award is presented each year to recognize outstanding performance throughout the previous year.

City of Joplin road resurfacing begins next week

(From the City of Joplin)

The City’s resurfacing program for 2025 will begin the week of April 14, starting in the Easttown area. This work is referred to as “mill and overlay,” as the top few inches of existing asphalt are removed (milling), and then workers lay a fresh new coat of asphalt over the area (overlay).

As milling and paving operations along city roads begin, the City encourages citizens to watch for postings in their neighborhoods. Maps of the streets included in this year’s paving program can be found on the City website at https://www.joplinmo.org/168/City-Maps_ The City will complete numerous streets throughout the community, and maps are labeled with the general area of Joplin which is listed on the specific map.

If your street will be affected by the resurfacing, the contractor, Blevins Asphalt Construction, will notify residents along city streets with informational door hangers on their front doors. No parking signs will also be posted along both sides of the street and at both ends of each block. These notifications should be completed within 48 hours prior to the work being started. It is important to ensure that vehicles are not parked on the posted streets until the paving work has been completed.

Street resurfacing consists of a two-inch average milling and asphalt overlay. The yearly overlay was not bid out last year to allow utility work to be performed in the overlay zones. Therefore, this bid contains two resurfacing zones, so this year’s work will cover numerous areas in the City.

City staff annually evaluates the pavement conditions of the City street system using the Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) system and recommends streets that need improvements. City staff determines which streets are to be resurfaced through a selection process based on traffic counts, street classifications, structural integrity, and ride quality. Streets or parking lots may be added or deleted from this list.

Work during the week of April 14 will be in the Easttown area. Following the completion of this area, the contractor will move to other areas listed. Residents in these areas should watch for door hangers and postings in their neighborhoods to alert them of upcoming work. The planned areas are listed below, weather permitting. Maps of the areas included in the 2025 program are listed at https://www.joplinmo.org/168/City-Maps_, and the individual links are listed below. This information will also be posted on the City’s Facebook page.

MSSU to hold World Music and Cuisine Festival

(From Missouri Southern State University)

The 10th Annual World Music and Cuisine Festival will take place on April 19, 2025, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Missouri Southern State University’s Young Gymnasium.

Students and community members will serve international dishes while a variety of musical groups perform. For $15, guests receive a wristband to access food samples. Countries such as Japan, South Korea, Germany, Mexico, Thailand, Spain, India, Honduras, and more will represent their cuisine alongside local restaurants like Magic Noodle.

Students from MSSU’s Department of Performing Arts will open the festival at 5 p.m. Samba Bom, a Midwest-based Brazilian music ensemble, will perform from 6-7 p.m. and MSSU international students will perform from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“The event has become one of the more popular events held on campus, bringing hundreds of community members to our campus to celebrate the cultures and foods of the world.” said Aaron Carmichael, coordinator of the event and director of the Intensive English Program. “Our international students love it, and it gives them an opportunity to share their culture with the campus and community.”

The proceeds of the festival will help fund the student-led International Club, providing activities and educational opportunities for members.

“It's very special that we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary,” Carmichael explained. “The exciting thing is to see more folks getting involved from both the community and campus to make this event a success. It’s a total volunteer effort, so every person involved sees its value. Let’s hope we will still be at it 10 years from now.”

Fugitive arrested after high-speed chase from McDonald County to Oklahoma

(From the McDonald County Sheriff's Office)

On April 2nd, 2025, a McDonald County Deputy coming back from a call in the Longview area observed a suspicious person walking near God’s Glory Tabernacle Church in the Bunker Hill area of McDonald County.

Unable to obtain much information from the uncooperative individual, the Deputy observed a vehicle parked at the church and obtained a vehicle license which it was obvious did not check back to the individual.

After developing additional information, the Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle which led to the individual, later identified as William C. Wernimont of Kansas, Oklahoma, refusing to stop and exceeding speeds of 110 miles per hour on I-49 before exiting I-49 by going the wrong way on an on-ramp.

Working to identify Wernimont and the vehicle, the McDonald County Sheriff’s Office obtained search warrants and with the assistance of the Joplin (MO.) Police Department and the Missouri Information Analysis Center were able to identify Wernimont.

Wernimont, a convicted felon with outstanding warrants for felony assault on law enforcement and endangering the public while eluding, was tracked to a residence near the town of Kansas in Delaware County, Oklahoma.

There, deputies of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement officers from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Cherokee Nation Marshal’s Service, Grand River Dam Authority, and Kansas (OK) Police Department went to the residence to execute the arrest warrants and Wernimont subsequently fled from those officers resulting in a two-hour long manhunt which led to the capture of Wernimont.

Charges are being submitted to the McDonald County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for the violations that occurred in Missouri and Wernimont is currently in custody in Delaware County on no-bond probation violation warrants.
