Sophomore Day, Career Day planned at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

Sophomore Day and Career Day – two of the biggest events of the spring semester – are planned for next week at Missouri Southern State University.

More than 1,000 area students are expected for the annual Sophomore Day event, set for Tuesday, April 2.

High-school sophomores from Webb City, Neosho, Monett, Aurora and Galena, Kan., will be on hand for the event, which will begin with opening ceremonies at 9:15 a.m. in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Students will be divided into groups for a day of campus tours.

Nearly 30 stops will be offered across campus, showcasing programs such as teacher education, criminal justice, communications and business, as well as information about financial aid, dual credit and study abroad.

“Sophomore Day gives students a unique opportunity to explore what college life is like, and to gain insight into the many quality academic programs that Southern has to offer,” said Heather Lesmeister, director of University Relations & Marketing. “The event also gives our faculty a chance to showcase their departments, the wide variety of majors and minor available, and our beautiful campus.”

Career Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Leggett & Platt.

Open to all Missouri Southern students and alumni, the event is a chance to network with representatives from a wide variety of area employers, graduate schools and others.

This year, a total of 110 organizations will be on hand for the event, said Alex Gandy, director of Career Services.

“It’s an opportunity for our students and alumni to meet face to face with employers and explore career opportunities, whether it be full- or part-time positions or internships,” he said. “They can ask questions and learn more about positions that are available.”

Poet Alan Berecka to speak at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

The Saltzman Visiting Writers Series at Missouri Southern State University will continue with presentations by poet Alan Berecka on Tuesday, April 2.

Berecka will discuss his writing process and take questions at 11 a.m. in Room 206 of Kuhn Hall. He will give a reading at 7 p.m. in Room 413 of Spiva Library.

His poetry has appeared in publications such as American Literary Review, Texas Review and Red River Review. Published collections include “The Comic Flaw,” “Remembering the Body,” “With Our Baggage” and “The Hamlet of Stittville.”

“Alan is quite personable, funny and is a writer who came to his writing career somewhat later,” says Dr. Joey Brown, professor of English at Missouri Southern. “I think many people can relate to his experience of being from a small town, from a working class family, and of not being able to find as much time to write as one dreams.

“He writes a lot of family, the influence of religion – Catholicism, particularly – on his perspectives, coming of age, and has an interesting mix of very serious and rather funny poems.”

Copies of his books will be available to purchase. The presentations are open to the public.

For more information about Berecka’s work, visit www.alanberecka.com.

MSSU Dental Hygiene Department schedule day to provide free dental services to area children

(From Southern News Service)

The Dental Hygiene Department at Missouri Southern State University is partnering with the Community Clinic of Southwest Missouri to offer free dental services to area children from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29, in the MSSU dental hygiene clinic – located on the first floor of the Julio S. León Health Sciences Building.

Families have already pre-registered their children for Community Clinic Sealant Day. The children currently receive free and reduced lunches at area schools.

“This target population often falls through the cracks when it comes to oral health services,” said Kim Rogers, interim dental hygiene department chair. “Our partnership will allow children to receive this valuable preventative treatment.”

MSSU plans to host another event like this in the future. Families looking to qualify can contact Stephanie Brady at the Community Clinic of Southwest Missouri at (417) 624-5500 or by email: stephanie@joplinclinic.org.

Carthage teachers receive statewide recognition as outstanding beginning teachers

(From Southern News Service)

Two recent graduates from the School of Education at Missouri Southern State University were recognized Wednesday, March 27, as Outstanding Beginning Teachers.

Nicole Renken, (top photo)’18, a math teacher at Carthage Junior High, and Stacy Smith, ’17, a special education teacher at Carthage High School, were among those honored during the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) conference in Columbia, Mo.

MACTE is a state affiliate of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Every two years, the organization accepts nominations from member institutions around Missouri for up to two first- or second-year teachers.

“I don’t think anyone expects to get this kind of award for their first year of teaching,” said Renken. “I was surprised and very honored.

“I was the assistant director at a daycare for a couple of years. I loved kids, but I also loved math. I did some substituting, and friends who taught at the junior-high level thought I’d be a good teacher. I took their advice (and got my degree) and I did love it, even more than I thought I would.”

Smith said working with children also sparked her interest in becoming a teacher.

“Working in a preschool, I saw all different kinds of learners,” she said. “I really enjoyed the challenge of trying to find out what their needs were and developing strategies to help meet those needs.

“That led me to go to Missouri Southern and get my degree.”

Dr. Susan Craig, associate professor of teacher education at MSSU, said the two recent graduates were very deserving of the award.

“They were both tremendous students and are now tremendous teachers,” said Craig. “I couldn’t be more excited for them.”

Cherokee County murder suspect captured in California, his mother is still at large

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

On April 30, 2017, the deceased body of a man was discovered alongside a rural Cherokee County road.

Sheriff’s Investigators identified the victim as 64-year-old James McFarland, a homeless man from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“As the case evolved, detectives quickly identified Ty Bohlander and his mother Diane Bohlander, as suspects, leading to First Degree Murder charges being filed against both of them and arrest warrants being issued,” according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

During the search for the Bohlander’s, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Investigators obtained information leading them to believe they traveled to Aurora Colorado, Cheyenne Wyoming, and eventually to Southern California after killing McFarland.

“Our detectives have been working closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshal’s Office, among other law enforcement partners, in an effort to locate and apprehend the suspects,” continued Sheriff Groves.

“Those efforts paid off when Ty Bohlander, was located and placed under arrest last week by the Santa Monica Police Department in California. He is currently being held in a Los Angeles Correctional Facility, where he is awaiting extradition back to Cherokee County.”

“At this time, we are coordinating with California authorities to extradite the suspect back to Kansas to answer for the allegations made against him. As for his mother, Diane, we believe her to still to be in the Santa Monica area and law enforcement there continue to search for her,” concluded Sheriff Groves.

MSSU senior receives prestigious research grant

(From Southern News Service)

Cameron Priester, a senior biology major at Missouri Southern State University, has received a $1,200 grant from Prairie Biotic Research – funding which will allow him to present the results for a research project at scientific conferences.

Priester is studying former mining areas in Joplin and Webb City, using snails to determine if the remediation process has produced a healthier ecosystem.

It’s a project that has developed into a unique collaboration with two of his instructors.

“This is my second semester at Missouri Southern,” says Dr. Kyle Gustafson, assistant professor of biology and environmental health. “I wanted to get some research up and running when I got here and I asked my classes if anyone had any interest and to come talk to me about it. Cameron took me up on it, and we devised a project based on his interests.”

Those interests include land reclamation and habitat management. Priester currently works for a habitat management effort underway in Webb City. Gustafson’s idea to sample aquatic invertebrates for effects of the ecosystem also aligned with his student’s love for wildlife.

“I’ve always enjoyed wildlife and nature,” says Priester. “I maybe watched a little too much ‘Crocodile Hunter’ growing up … Steve Erwin inspired me as far as caring for and handling wildlife.”

After spending last semester reviewing studies and other literature, he began identifying locations that had been affected by heavy metals from the area’s long mining history. The idea was to use snails – and, more specifically, their shells – to see if cleanup projects by the EPA and other conservation groups have improved the ecosystem.

“I would think that remediated areas would show that snails take up less heavy metals than in non-remediated areas,” says Priester. “But in these kinds of projects, you never know what will happen.”

Creating a process to test this theory required the assistance of another one of his professors – Dr. Lynell Gilbert-Saunders, associate professor of chemistry.

“I began working with her to create a procedure for testing and chemical analysis,” says Priester.

New equipment in the recently renovated Reynolds Hall is proving to be essential to studying the chemistry that impacts snails, says Gilbert-Saunders.

After grinding down and ashing the shells – burning off any remaining carbon materials – the goal is to study what’s left.

“The only thing left is the rock part of the shell, and the goal is to look at the mineral composition,” she says. “Just like people with their teeth and bones, if you’re in an environment that has high concentrations of metals, the thinking is that metals will be deposited in the shell.”

In the Reynolds Hall instrument lab, Priester is using new, high-tech instrumentation to aid his research. The Agilent MP-AES (Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer) incinerates samples using nitrogen-fueled microwave plasma and identifies the elements that are present. In this case, he is looking for lead, iron, cadmium, zinc and other residual metals from the early mining days.

Gustafson encouraged his student to apply for the prestigious Prairie Biotic Research grant.

“They’re an all-volunteer, nonprofit company,” says Gustafson. “Their whole goal is to fund research … specifically research focusing on the conservation of prairies. Cameron is pretty much exclusively looking at the prairie wetlands.”

Having been accepted for the full $1,200 grant, Priester will use the funds to present his findings at conferences, including the Ozark-Prairie Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry gathering in May.

“I worked hard on the grant application, but I didn’t know how significant it really was,” he says. “It will be my first time going to a conference like this. I’m hoping to have some tangible results by the middle of April.”

City of Neosho to hold open house to discuss block grants for flood recovery

(From the City of Neosho)

The City of Neosho invites members of the community to attend a Public Open House on Monday, April 15 from 4 – 6 p.m., to discuss the 2017 Flooding Disaster and suggestions for flood recovery.

The City plans to apply for CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) funds, available through the Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) federal Disaster Declaration 4317 (DR4317), addressing the April 2017 floods.

DR4317 provides $58.5M to be used among five communities in southern Missouri for the purpose of recovery, specifically in the area of housing.

Many homes were significantly damaged during the 2017 flood event. Some are currently inhabitable and/or unoccupied.

Others have undergone repairs, but remain in the area where floodwaters rose, and are likely to rise again.

City leaders are interested in exploring options to enhance the availability of safe and affordable housing in the community, away from flood-prone areas. Funds may be used to rehabilitate or raise structures out of the high-water line, or remove the structures altogether, and work in cooperation with other State agencies to build housing units in less vulnerable locations.

Prior to completing the final application for funds, Neosho invites residents and property owners, as well as other civic leaders, to attend this Open House, and share ideas on the most appropriate projects to be funded with this disaster recovery funding.

The Open House is scheduled for Monday, April 15, 2019 4 – 6 pm at The Lampo Building 500 Spring St., Neosho, Mo.
