She will speak on the American national security implications of current developments in North Korea.
Following her presentation, she will sign copies of her book, “Dictators and their Secret Police: Coercive Institutions and State Violence,” from 10:45 to 11 a.m. She will be available for media interviews from 11 to 11:15 a.m.
Greitens is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Missouri, a non-resident senior fellow at the Center for East Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, and an associate in research at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University.
She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University; an M.Phil. from Oxford University, where she studied as a Marshall Scholar; and a B.A. from Stanford University.
She and Gov. Eric Greitens were married in 2011, and are the parents of two sons, Joshua and Jacob. As Missouri’s first lady, she focuses on foster care and adoption initiatives, an interest sparked when she was eight years old by the adoption of her younger sister. As an educator and a mother, Greitens believes strongly in the importance of protecting society’s most vulnerable children, and looks forward to working to strengthen families across the state.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Her appearance is a part of Korea Semester activities at MSSU

Incident Spotlight
This morning at 1:21am one of our officers obtained information that a female was at an apartment at 822 Connecticut that had a felony first degree assault warrant with no bond, out of Jasper County.
When officers made contact at the door with a female, the female with the warrant also came to the door and gave a false name. She then ran to the back of the apartment with the officer chasing her, giving her commands.
She tried to slam the bedroom door on the officer, and he was able to force it open.
The female continued to resist but was ultimately taken into custody for her warrant. Her warrant stemmed from a call our department responded to on July 31st, where the female shot at a male during an argument.

News events affect different people in different ways.
One such event- an accident on Highway 96, earlier this week offers a perfect example. Any time roads are closed, people want to know why. In this case, it was because of fatality accident.
The announcement that a fatality accident had occurred, even before the name of the victim had been released, was the most visited post this week on Inside Joplin.
The news that the victim was Jacob Holliday, 21, Jasper, (pictured) was released later that day and was the number four post for the week.
Jacob Holliday made many friends in his short time on this earth. He lived in Jasper, worked in Lamar, attended Crowder College in Webb City and had recently begun working in Joplin. His obituary was the most visited post this week on the Inside Joplin Obituaries blog.
It was news about a much different kind of person, President Donald Trump, that dominated the Turner Report statistics. The initial news that he will be coming to Springfield next week was the top post, while my commentary on Confederate statutes, based on the president's misadventures in reacting to Charlottesville, came in at number two and confirmation of his visit was number nine.
At number five was my commentary advising some of the most vehement of President Trump's supporters to lighten up.

Missouri Blue Alert system is now operational
(From the Missouri Highway Patrol)
Colonel Sandra K. Karsten, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces Missouri's Blue Alert System is now operational. Senate Bill 34, signed by Gov. Eric Greitens on July 6, becomes effective on Monday, August 28, and called for the creation of the Blue Alert System in Missouri.
“Blue Alert is an important program that lets every law enforcement officer in the state of Missouri know that the community supports them and has their back,” said Governor Eric Greitens. “Our police officers do dangerous work to protect all of us, and this program will help us ensure that anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer is quickly found and brought to justice.”
According to Section 650.520 RSMo., a Blue Alert can be issued in Missouri if the following criteria are met:
Missouri's Blue Alert System is a cooperative effort that includes the Department of Public Safety, Missouri Department of Transportation, State Emergency Management Agency, Missouri State Highway Patrol, broadcasters and state law enforcement agencies to quickly get word out to the general public of an attack on a police officer or an imminent threat.
A Blue Alert will work similar to an AMBER Alert and use the same technology. Using television and radio broadcasts through the Emergency Alert System, text messaging, and MoDOT message boards, each Blue Alert will provide the public with a description of the offender, the offender’s vehicle, and license plate number, as available. Cell phone customers should contact their cellular service provider for information on whether Blue Alert text messages will be made available.
Quickly and widely disseminating this information enlists the public’s assistance in identifying and capturing the suspect, and reducing the threat to the general public and law enforcement officers.

Mass Band Day among activities at Missouri Southern next week
(From Southern News Service)
Nearly 800 area high-school students will take the field with the Lion Pride Marching Band for a half-time performance on Thursday, Aug. 31, as the Lions open the 2017 football season vs. Fort Hays State at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
The annual Mass Band Day performance will include students from high schools in Jasper, East Newton, Exeter, Seneca, Neosho, Webb City, Joplin, Miller, Aurora and Diamond,” said Dr. Rick Espinosa, director of bands at Missouri Southern.
“This is by far our biggest performance in terms of the number of kids on the field,” he said. “We’re going to be performing music from animated films. The Mass Band will play ‘Everything is Awesome’ from ‘The Lego Movie,’ the Lion Pride Band will perform ‘Get Back Up Again’ from ‘Trolls,’ and then the Mass Band will close with ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from ‘Moana.’”
The high-school bands will gather to rehearse the performance at 2 p.m. in the stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Other events scheduled at Missouri Southern include a show by mentalist Chris Carter and lectures offered as part of the Korea Semester.
