Galena Police Department: Death of Carthage woman still being investigated

On Saturday, October 26th, at approximately 5:45 p.m., the Galena Police Department responded to a report of a death at 321 Clark Street. 

Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive individual later identified as Stacy Miner, 50, of Carthage, MO. The coroner pronounced Ms. Minor deceased at the scene.

The cause of death is currently under investigation, but preliminary findings indicate no signs of foul play. Next of kin have been notified.

Police are still actively investigating all circumstances surrounding this case and encourage anyone with further information to contact the Galena Police Department.

The Galena Police Department will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available

Fire Department: Burning still not allowed in Joplin

Burning is still not allowed in the city of Joplin. We are hopeful the widespread rainfall predicted for the weekend becomes a reality. 

If it does happen, we will look at resuming the issuance of burn permits early next week.

Donations providing bulletproof vests for Joplin Police Department Chaplains

The JPD Chaplains are a 501(c)3 nonprofit ministry with a 37+ year history of working in support of the Joplin Police Department. Currently we have 7 local ministers who share on call 24/7 duties in a weekly rotation. Their responsibilities include counseling, death notifications, disaster response, domestic disputes, ethics, support to police officers and their families, officer deaths/funerals, post-shooting trauma, victim assistance, and benevolence needs in the community. 

This year, bulletproof vests were identified as a need for the volunteer chaplain team. The chaplain program sought donations to meet this need and received an anonymous private charitable gift along with donations made by the following local bank branches: Central Bank, Great Southern Bank, and Community Bank & Trust. 

As a 100% volunteer chaplain team, no financial gifts go toward salaries. Thus, any proceeds we receive through our 501c3 nonprofit will go to the annual budgeted needs for continued training and certifications, as well as for supplies and the officer appreciation dinner events which the chaplains host twice yearly. 

We thank the donors for their support, as the vests will help protect our chaplains on incidents when they respond to ongoing, dangerous situations.

Holiday scams featured on latest Newsmakers program

The season of giving is also the season of stealing for scam artists who prey on holiday online shoppers and even those wishing to be charitable. Pamela Hernandez with the Missouri Better Business Bureau explains the top 12 holiday scams on this week’s Newsmakers program.

Hernandez offers tips on how to verify if an online seller is legitimate, what you should do before buying that cute puppy advertised on social media plus warnings about fake tolls, free gift cards, bogus temp jobs, imposter scams and more. 

Hernandez says scammers often use fake shipping notifications via text or email to trick online shoppers into divulging personal information and even money to pay for shipping for packages that don’t really exist. She shares information about tracking packages and protecting your personal information.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of November 3 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, November 9 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet in Carthage. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.

Carthage woman injured in accident on Burr Oak Road

A Carthage woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 5 p.m. Tuesday on Burr Oak Road four miles south of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2011 Ford Fusion driven by Katelyn E. Beeler, 23, Carthage, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

Beeler was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin.

 

Two injured, Lamar woman flown to Cox South after crash near Kenoma

Two Lamar residents were injured in a one-vehicle accident 3:45 a.m. today on SE 55th Lane a half mile north of Kenoma.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2007 Pontiac Vibe driven by Kristina M. Greene, 40, Lamar, ran off the right side and struck an embankment.

Greene was flown to Cox South, Springfield, for treatment of serious injuries.

A passenger, Scott D. Rhodifer, 39, Lamar, was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin. 

Carthage residents injured in accident on I-44

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision 11:08 a.m. today on I-44 in Fidelity.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2012 Honda Accord driven by Tammy L. Jones, 52, Lake Ozark, turned into the path of a 2009 Honda Accord driven by a 16-year-old Carthage boy.

Jones was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Joplin.

The boy and a passenger in his vehicle, a 17-year-old Carthage girl, were treated for minor injuries at Mercy Carthage.

Entries being accepted for Crowder Quill

The Crowder Quill art and literary magazine of Crowder College is now accepting entries for its annual contest in literature, photography and art.

The free competition accepts entries in eight different categories: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, B&W photography, color photography, digital art, 2D art, and 3D art.

“The Quill has adopted a policy against the use of artificial intelligence that replaces the creative expression of human-generated art and original thought,” stated Latonia Bailey, Quill Adviser. “However, digital technology such as photo editing software may be used as a tool for the digital art category, and the creative process should be clearly explained in the entry details.”

Entries should be sent as digital files and uploaded online through the portal accessed at www.CrowderQuill.com on the page tab "To enter contest."

Individuals may submit up to four entries in each category by the Feb. 1 deadline. Specific guidelines for each category and more information may be obtained on the website.

Crowder students as well as area high school students and community members compete for awards and publication. High school students may also win a $500 scholarship for top placement in each category.

Email Quill@Crowder.edu to make arrangements for hand-delivered 2D and 3D art entries or if internet access is an issue. Winning entrants will be notified by mid-March, and the magazine will be published in May.

The Quill has been published since 1980 with the mission of encouraging and showcasing local authors, artists, and photographers. It is distributed free on campus and in the community as well as digitally.

The Crowder Quill class is part of the Digital Media Marketing certificate at Crowder College in which students gain skills in content creation, marketing strategies, social media, graphic design, and communication.

Cherokee storyteller to appear at George Washington Carver National Monument

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, George Washington Carver National Monument is pleased to host Cherokee storyteller, Greg Bilby, on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. 

Greg received his degree in journalism from Oklahoma State University and serves as public health educator and outreach coordinator for the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. His passion is storytelling, and he will share stories of Cherokee history, heritage, and traditions.

The National Park Service and our partners celebrate together the rich traditions, languages, and contributions of Indigenous people. Come hear the stories of diverse experiences and special places and spaces from a dynamic storyteller. Our history is part of who we were, who we are, and who we will be. This program takes place inside the visitor center and is free of charge.

"Winter Wonderland" chosen as theme for Joplin Christmas Parade

Locally owned and nationally recognized, Freeman Health System’s stated goals are to provide top-notch medical care to the region as well as serve as a good neighbor by enhancing the well-being of the Joplin community.

No better example of the latter can be found than with the annual Joplin Christmas Parade, to which Freeman employees have donated countless man-hours over the years to organize and orchestrate the event.

In a press conference held Wednesday, October 30, at Joplin City Hall, Freeman President and Chief Executive Officer Paula Baker and Keenan Cortez, City of Joplin Mayor, unveiled the 2024 Christmas parade’s theme – Winter Wonderland. The parade is set for 6:00 pm Tuesday, December 3, with a route starting at 15th and Main Streets and running north to Second Street.

“Freeman has produced the Joplin Christmas Parade since 2014, and we’re honored that the City of Joplin entrusts us with this job,” Baker said. “It’s a big project and takes hundreds of volunteer hours and many dedicated hearts to pull off an event of this magnitude. We embrace this challenge because it’s our way of giving back to the community that has supported Freeman Health System for nearly 100 years.”
Cortez took a moment to announce that Baker would be this year’s Grand Marshal. Having served at the helm of Freeman for the last 13 years, Baker announced her retirement earlier this year. Cortez cited some of Baker’s largest accomplishments, ranging from the leadership she demonstrated during the 2011 Joplin tornado disaster and COVID-19 pandemic to overseeing the expansion of Joplin West Hospital and the Freeman Southeast Kansas Hospital now under construction in Frontenac, Kansas.

“We thank her for her service to our community these past years and find it very fitting that she will serve as this year’s Christmas Parade’s Grand Marshal,” Cortez said.

All proceeds from the 54th Annual Joplin Children Parade benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®, an organization that makes miracles happen for local children needing help with medical issues. Monies raised help purchase specialized equipment, travel funds for out-of-town visits to pediatric specialists, or funding for individually trained service dogs for qualified children.

“One hundred percent of every dollar raised locally stays and helps children across 14 counties in Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas,” Baker said.

New this year will be plenty of accessible parking for Joplin and area residents with disabilities.

“We’re proud to carry on this holiday tradition where you can make magical memories with your families and friends,” Baker said.

• Trusted adults should accompany young children at all times on a planned route
• Older kids: Use the buddy system; stay in well-lit, familiar areas
• Only approach homes with porch lights on.
• Cross streets only after looking both ways.
• Drivers: Navigate your route slowly and stay alert for trick-or-treaters.
• Make sure children know how to reach an adult in an emergency.

Anderson boy, 7, injured in car-deer collision

An Anderson boy was injured in a one-vehicle collision 7:10 a.m. today on Route NN two miles east of Anderson.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2018 Nissan Rogue driven by Michelle L. Buttry, 52, Anderson, struck a deer in the roadway.

A passenger, a 7-year-old boy was treated for minor injuries at Freeman Urgent Care, Neosho.

 

Carthage, Sarcoxie residents injured in 3-vehicle accident on I-44

Three people were injured in a three-vehicle accident 8:50 a.m. today on I-44 two miles east of Fidelity.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2012 Ford F250 driven by Jason D. Graff, 52, Sarcoxie, struck the rear of a 2021 International HV507 driven by Christopher J. Gregory, 39, Carthage, then traveled into another lane and struck a 2024 Ford Transit driven by Evenzsi D. Reneauy, 39, Long Beach, California.

Graff and Reneauvy were treated for serious and minor injuries, respectively, at Mercy Joplin.

Gregory sought his own treatment for minor injuries.

Joplin teen injured in collision on 66 at Black Cat Road

A Joplin teen was injured in a two-vehicle accident 1:30 p.m. today on MO 66 at Black Cat Road a half mile west of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2011 Kia Forte driven by a 17-year-old Joplin girl failed to yield and struck a 2018 Jeep Wrangler driven by Jessica L. Hall, 52, Galena, Kansas.

The Hall vehicle traveled off the roadway, down an embankment and through a fence.

The Joplin girl received minor injuries.

Public meeting scheduled to discuss improvements along Route 66 corridor in Joplin

The public is invited to participate in an in-person public meeting to learn more about plans to make pavement, sidewalk, traffic and safety improvements along Missouri Route 66 (7th Street) in Joplin, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The open-house style in-person meeting will be held 4:30-6 p.m., Thursday, November 7, in the Joplin City Council Chambers, Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main Street.

A virtual (online) meeting will be available for two weeks from Thursday, October 31, until Thursday, November 14, and can be accessed at www.modot.org/southwest.

The project will make improvements along the Route 66 (7th Street) corridor in Joplin between Jasper County Route P (Schifferdecker Avenue) and Loop 49 (Range Line Road).

As part of this project, the contractor will rebuild the pavement, bring sidewalks up to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, and upgrade and replace several traffic signals along the corridor.

The estimated cost of the project is $60.2 million. Work is tentatively scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025 with completion in late 2027.

Golden City home a total loss after Saturday night fire

About 11:30pm Saturday night, Jasper Fire along with Lamar Fire was dispatched for automatic aid to the Golden City FD for a house fire on Depot Street in Golden City. 

The house was completely involved at the time of dispatch. The fire was contained to the structure and did not spread to surrounding buildings. It was however a total loss. 

Jasper Fire units were back in our station just before 3am.

10/24/2024 Officer was dispatched to the 600 block of West 13th St in reference to stolen property. Investigation continues.

10/24/2025 On person came into the Police Department with a complaint of harassment. Summons was issued to the suspect for peace disturbance.

10/25/2024 Officer was dispatched to the 700 block of E. 12th St regarding property damage. Investigation continues.

10/25/2024 Officer was patrolling in the area of 9th and Oak St when he observed a male riding a motorcycle and knew the subject was not motorcycle qualified Subject was issued a summons for Driving While Intoxicated/Drugs and was also issued summonses for no motor cycle endorsement, failure to register vehicle and no proof of insurance.

10/26/2024 Officers were asked to respond to the 1300 block of Lexington in reference to a theft of coins from washer and dryer units. Investigation continues.

Sarcoxie man injured in collision on I-44

A Sarcoxie man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 8:24 p.m. Saturday on I-44 four miles south of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2024 Freightliner truck driven by Heriberto Gonzalez, 36, Holyoke, Massachusetts struck a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Angela Bussard, 34, Sarcoxie, as it was trying to pass.

The Bussard vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and struck the median cable barrier.

A passenger in the Bussard vehicle, Aaron Bussard, 35, Sarcoxie, was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Joplin.

 

Webb City man cited for DWI following injury accident on 171

A Webb City man was cited for driving while intoxicated following a two-vehicle collision 11:45 p.m. Saturday on MO 171 three miles north of Asbury.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2024 Honda Accord driven by Angel F. Cortes Sierra, 22, Webb City, crossed the center line and struck a 2014 Prevost H3-45 bus driven by Michael L. Kern, 73, Ozark.

Sierra, who was also cited for failed to drive on the right half of the roadway, was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin.

 

Webb City man injured in collision north of Carl Junction

A Webb City man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 10:17 a.m. Sunday on Ivy Road at County Road 270 a quarter mile north of Carl Junction.

According to the Highway Patrol report, 2016 Ford F250 driven by Jacob F. Meyer, 23, Carl Junction, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a 2023 Ford Raptor driven by Alan K. Schmidt, 70, Webb City, in the side.

Schmidt was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Joplin.

Neosho man injured in motorcycle-deer collision

A Neosho man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 7:08 p.m. Friday on MO 86 one mile east of Neosho.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2022 Honda CB1000 motorcycle driven by Mason L. Snyder, 37, Neosho, struck a deer in the roadway.

Snyder was ejected and the motorcycle overturned.

Snyder was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin. 

Reeds man dead after collision with semi on 96

A Reeds man was killed in a two-vehicle collision 2:35 a.m. today on MO 96 a half mile east of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 GMC Sierra driven by Ronnie D. Gillmore, 43, Reeds, crossed the center line and struck a 2022 Freightliner driven by Kevin W. Fields, 58, Marionville.

After the impact, Gillmore was ejected and was struck by the Freightliner, as both vehicles ran off the road.

Jasper County Deputy Coroner Andrew Roughton pronounced Gillmore dead at the scene at 2:45 a.m.

The fatality was the 90th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

During the evening hours of 10/25/2024, Lamar PD Officers conducted a traffic stop near 9th & Gulf. The driver was identified as Kelsey L. Mendoza, 30, of Sarcoxie, MO, and one passenger, Ralph A Sabala, 65, of Overland Park, KS. Further investigation found that the driver had arrest warrants from Jasper County, MO, and the passenger had a warrant for his arrest as well.

During a search of the vehicle, officers located a loaded pistol as well as suspected illegal narcotics and paraphernalia items.

Kelsey Mendoza was cited for driving under the influence of drugs. Charges were forwarded to the Barton County Prosecutor for Ralph Sabala for a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Additional charges pending identification from a crime lab of the suspected illegal narcotics.

Ofc. Brandon Carbone made the initial vehicle stop; he was assisted by Ofc. Duncan, Cpl. Hockett and Sgt. Cornell.

As is the case in all arrests, charges are based on probable cause and all persons are considered innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Pineville man injured in collision south of Powell

A Pineville man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 3:40 p.m. Thursday on Highway E six miles south of Powell.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1995 Nissan Maxima driven by Bryan C. Steedman, 36, Pineville, traveled across the center line into the path of a 2020 Ford F250 driven by Natasha L. Harrington, 35, Washburn.

Steedman was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Bella Vista, Arkansas.
