Joplin Fire Department battles house fire near 8th and Ohio

(From the Joplin Police Department)

At 8:12 PM, the Joplin 911 center was notified of a possible structure fire near 8th and Ohio. On arrival a single story residential dwelling had fire showing from the exterior and was advancing into the attic.

Fire personnel began attacking the fire and searched the residence for occupants. The fire was contained in 20 minutes and there were no occupants in the structure.

The Joplin Fire Marshal’s office responded to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

The fire was determined to have originated on the exterior of the structure, but the cause remains under investigation. JFD received assistance from the Joplin Police Department and METS ambulance.

During suppression efforts a driver of a passenger vehicle drove over the 5” hose that was being utilized for water supply. JPD officers on scene issued a citation for driving over the hose.

We would like to stress to the public that when you drive over a charged fire hose there is a good chance the hose will rupture and place our firefighters in danger. In addition to the risk it creates for our firefighters, that section of hose now has to be taken out of service and tested before it can be used again.

Due to the risk that it creates for our staff we have asked our PD partners to have a zero tolerance policy for anyone that drives over our hose and to issue a citation.

Royale Cinema Lounge featured on next Newsmakers

(From KGCS)

Some people might think VHS tapes are a thing of the past, but not so at Royale Cinema Lounge. The renovated and reworked Bookhouse Cinema and its membership style approach to movie and video watching are the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

Brothers and band mates, Nathan and Caleb Hurley explain why they bought the avant garde theatre and the various options for utilizing the space. Royale Cinema Lounge gets its name from the Hurley brothers band Fox Royale.

When not touring, the brothers wanted a space that offers something different when it comes to movies. Hundreds of VHS tapes are available at the cinema with multiple viewing areas as well as the bigger screen for special programming including mainstream movies. Royale Cinema Lounge member, Jake Bennett, explains why he enjoys this approach for a movie theatre and has details of a Midweek Movie club.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of March 2 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS-TV programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
