Crowder criminal justice students pass POST exam
Students in Crowder’s Technical Education Center HS Criminal Justice program recently traveled to Jefferson City to complete their Industry recognized credential through Missouri Peace Officers Association.
Crowder College students had 100 percent pass rate on the test. There were six career centers across the state who sent an additional 24 students with nine of those passing.
“I am proud of our students and their accomplishments in passing the exam. It is difficult and stressful for the students, but overall it was a great experience for them,” stated Oren Barnes, Criminal Justice Instructor.

Jasper County deputies investigate Carthage domestic assault incident

On April 29th, 2022 at approximately 2:20 AM, Jasper County deputies responded to a report of a domestic assault at 5200 Elm Rd in Carthage, Mo.
When deputies arrived, they located a male with a non-life threatening laceration to the forearm. He was treated at the scene.
Scammon man arrested for burglary, property damage

Cherokee County Deputies arrested a rural Scammon man late Thursday night while allegedly burglarizing a home in the northern part of the county.
Deputies responded to the residence just before 9:00 p.m. and took 39 year-old Wesley Woods into custody as he was exiting the home.
Woods was transported to the Cherokee County Jail on allegations of Burglary and Criminal Damage to Property.

04/19/2022 Officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of College for a report of a disturbance. A summons was issued for trespassing.
04/20/2022 Officer took a report of a burglary in the 1500 block of Poplar. Several items were recovered on 04/24/2022.
4/20/2022 Officer took a report of vandalism in restrooms at the park. Investigation continues.
04/24/2022 Officers of the Lamar Police Department assisted members of the Ozark Drug Enforcement Team with serving a search warrant in the 1300 block of Gulf. Several items that had been reported as stolen just a few days before were recovered during this search.

Fine Arts Week events scheduled at Crowder College

Joplin Health Department offers vaccinations for kindergarten enrollment
(From the Joplin Health Department)The Joplin City Health Department has vaccinations required for your child to begin kindergarten. We want to help you make sure your child is prepared. If your child lives within the Joplin city limits or is enrolled in a Joplin public or private school, we want to offer assistance.
We provide immunizations for many insurances, the uninsured or underinsured, and those with Medicaid/Managed Care.
The Joplin Health Department has available all vaccinations that are recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) through the Vaccines for Children program. We have all of the vaccines required for entry into kindergarten.
We urge you to obtain vaccinations now before the Kindergarten round-up begins. Call now to schedule an appointment.
Immunizations will be given at the upper-level entrance (west side) of the Joplin Health Department, 321 E. Fourth Street. Please note that a parent/guardian ID and the child’s insurance information and immunization record are required, so bring them with you to the clinic.

Route 97 to close south of Lockwood
(From MODOT)Route 97 to CLOSE Between Routes NN & 96 Week of May 2 to Replace Four Bridges
Contractor crews will CLOSE Missouri Route 97 between Lawrence County Route NN and Missouri Route 96 south of Lockwood to replace four (4) bridges beginning the week of May 2, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
Beginning with the bridge over Dry Branch north of Route YY, contractor crews will remove and replace three existing box bridges and one single-lane bridge with new structures as well as adding new object markers at the ends of the bridges.
These are the impacted bridges on Route 97:
Over Dry Branch – Closed between Lawrence County Road 2015 and Route YY.
Over Wilder Branch – Closed between Lawrence County roads 2030 and 2040.
Over North White Oak Creek – Closed between Lawrence County roads 2010 and 2015.
Over South White Oak Creek – Closed between Lawrence County roads 2040 and 2050.
Traffic Impacts
Route 97 will be CLOSED between Lawrence County roads 2010 and 2015, north of Route 96
Drivers will have access to driveways and entrances on either end of the work zone, but will not be allowed to drive through the work zone
Drivers will be directed to a signed detour using U.S. Route 160, Missouri Route 39 and Missouri Route 96. All Route 97 closures will use this same detour.
Route 97 will be CLOSED until late November 2022
Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone
Drivers should consider alternate routes during the project
Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for road closings/traffic impacts
This work is part of a three-year project to improve 25 bridges within 15 miles of I-44 across the Southwest District. Of the 25 bridges in the project, known as the I-44 Corridor Bridge Bundle, seven (7) are mainline I-44 bridges, five (5) are I-44 overpass bridges and the remaining bridges are on adjacent routes over various features. Sixteen (16) bridges will be replaced and nine (9) bridges will receive major rehabilitation work.
All work in 2022 will be in Lawrence County, where crews will replace five (5) bridges and rehabilitate four (4) others.
Weather and/or construction delays could alter the work schedule.

Crowder College Speech and Debate concludes successful season

The Crowder College Speech and Debate Team has had one of the best competitive seasons in recent history capping the season with top community college honors at the National Forensic Association National Tournament.
Over the course of the last two semesters, the team has competed in over 100 rounds of competition in 12 distinct events before participating in the national competition.
“At roughly an hour a piece, these students have spent over 130 hours in competition alone. Add to that the countless hours of practice and travel and it becomes clear that these honors are a result of intense dedication on the part of the students”, said Stout.
College speech and debate is not divided by division or collegiate level. “With the exception of Phi Ro Pi nationals, Crowder students compete against primarily 4-year universities,” commented Stout. “They compete against, and often beat, the best! This year alone, we have competed against students from AT LEAST 30 states”. The following is a summary of the accomplishments of the team.

Online Asynchronous Tournament Series (OATS) - The OATS tournament series, started as a result of Covid-19 travel restrictions, allows students to record their events and have them judged asynchronously.

Missouri Association of Forensic Activities (MAFA) tournament hosted by Park University
Hosted synchronously. The MAFA tournament acts as the state tournament for the state of Missouri. Students competed against many large schools in Missouri including Missouri State, University of Central Missouri, Truman State University, Webster University, Southwest Baptist, as well as students from other states. A total of 16 schools were in attendance from 6 states.
Crowder College was awarded the Bill Cue Community College Top award.

Phi Ro Pi National Tournament hosted by Southern Illinois College (hosted live in St. Louis)
Phi Ro Pi nationals is the national tournament for community colleges. Students competed against 41 schools from places such as California, Florida, Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho and more. This is the premier tournament for community college students. The Crowder College team earned the Silver Medal Sweepstakes award for Overall Team Performance (Top 10 in the Country).
Stout received the Region 5 Collie-Taylor Fellowship Award for Coaches.

Garrett was awarded the Warren-Dahlin Fellowship Award for region 5 because of his competitive spirit, friendly demeanor, and overall dedication to speech and debate. Only one student per region is recognized making him only one of ten students in the country to receive this award.
