(From Southern News Service)A popular holiday tradition will return to a live setting, with the 12th annual Seasonal Choral Flourish set for 1 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 812 S. Pearl Ave.
Presented by Missouri Southern State University’s Music Department, the concert will feature performances by the Missouri Southern Chamber Singers and Concert Chorale. The choral groups are under the direction of Dr. David Sharlow, with accompanist Glenda Austin.
Due to COVID, the 2020 concert was filmed without an audience and offered on DVD. Sharlow said choral members are excited to offer the performance as intended.
The concert has been held at St. Peter’s every year – except for 2013 when it was moved to another venue due to renovation work – and has evolved to feature a variety of music. The church, Sharlow said, is acoustically and aesthetically the perfect location to showcase the music offered during the Seasonal Choral Flourish.
“It will be a festive performance, with both popular and classical holiday music,” he said. “We’re happy to finally perform for a live audience again and present some of the things that have become traditions, such as the processional and closing performance of ‘Oh Holy Night,’ and carols that the audience can join in singing with us.
“We always have a focal point piece, and this year it will be John Rutter’s ‘Gloria,’ which is a 17-minute work.”
Admission is free and open to the public. Doors will open an hour before each performance.
