(From Southern News Service)An explosive exhibit by Kansas City multimedia artist Shawn Bitters is set to open Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Spiva Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.
Bitters works with drawing, painting, screen-printing, digital media and sculpture to create volcanic landscapes. The works that make up the exhibit – “Vents, Missives, and Fumaroles” – were inspired by field research in Iceland, Sicily, Japan and a wide range of environments in the American West.
His works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. He is an associate professor in the Department of Visual Art at the University of Kansas.
The exhibit at Missouri Southern will run through Wednesday, Feb. 9. A reception and artist talk will be offered at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium and will be followed by a reception in the gallery.

The exhibit is among the activities planned as students return to campus for the start of the Spring 2022 semester the week of Jan. 17.

Spring semester begins: Volunteers from around campus will be on hand to greet students as they arrive to welcome them back to campus.
Thursday, Jan. 20
Free doughnuts and hot chocolate: 9 to 11 a.m., Billingsly Student Center.
