Joplin woman killed in Halloween hit-and-run

(From the Webb City Police Department)

On Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 19:54 hours officers with the Webb City Police Department were dispatched to the area of North Main Street just north of Gene Hatfield Drive in reference to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash with injuries. Officers arrived on scene and found where a southbound silver 2006 Nissan Murano had struck two southbound pedestrians. The Murano left the scene without stopping. One of the pedestrians, Barbara D. Roland (41-year old female from Joplin), was transported from the scene by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Joplin where she died from her injuries. A second pedestrian, a 23-year old female from Webb City, suffered minor injuries but was not transported by ambulance. A third pedestrian, a small child in a stroller being pushed by the 23-year old female pedestrian, was not struck by the vehicle.

The Webb City Police Department searched the area and sent out a regional message on the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) in an attempt to locate the vehicle.

At 08:51 hours on Sunday, November 1, 2015 a 23-year old female from Joplin came to the Webb City Police Department to report that she may have been involved in last night’s crash. The driver stated that that she thought she struck a deer but that she did not see what she struck. The driver also stated that she immediately contacted the Webb City Police Department as soon as she learned someone was injured and they were looking for a vehicle similar to hers. The driver was interviewed by Webb City Detectives and they confirmed it was her vehicle that struck the pedestrians. The Detectives are continuing their investigation.

The identity of the 23-year old female driver is being withheld until criminal charges are filed.
