Carthage Police Department reports rash of guns, other items stolen from vehicles

In the last several days there has been several thefts from vehicles throughout the City. Many high value items have been stolen including firearms. 

Many of these vehicles had been left unlocked. Please remove valuables from your vehicle and always lock it.

Suspect sought in Cherokee County convenience store robbery

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating a Wednesday evening robbery at R&J's Convenience Store in northern Cherokee County.

At approximately 8:00 p.m., the suspect, described as a black male, approximately 6' tall, possibly in his 40's or 50's, stole an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect then fled in what is believed to be a white 2013 Volkswagon Passat. No weapons were brandished during the commission of the crime.

Anyone with information regarding the suspects' identity is asked to contact the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office at 620-429-3992 or submit information by text. Tipsters can text the number 88877 and simply type 'tip cherokee' followed by whatever information they are able to provide.

Cherokee County Sheriff warns of COVID-19 scams

While the Corona-virus continues to impact our daily lives in various ways, it's important to be extra vigilant to the fact criminals are seizing the opportunity to capitalize on the fear and anxiety many people are feeling right now.

"According to the Federal Trade Commission, in Kansas alone, there has been $850,000.00 in fraud related to Covid-19 scams this year," stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

The top reports in Kansas involve thieves conning residents with scams related to online shopping, travel / vacations, credit cards, scams through unsolicited text messages and from credit bureaus.

"While Congress is working on a second stimulus package for American's, thieves are no doubt working on ways to steal that money from our residents. They will likely start making calls, either claiming to be with the federal government and offering to help expedite the check or trying to confirm personal information such as name, birth date and bank account numbers."

"Just as with the initial stimulus package, the government will not contact you by phone or email seeking information as to where to send a payment. They will gather the information from previous Income Tax Filings," reminded Sheriff Groves.

"Criminals will continue to try different ways to scam unsuspecting citizens, whether it be offering 'Government-issued online Corona-virus tests' (which the Food and Drug Administration says is most certainly a scam), to phony small business loan opportunities or donation scams. That being the case, should anyone call and try to obtain personal information or send an email (even from an official looking email address), it's best to hang up or delete the email without opening any links. Despite how official they sound, don't feel bad about hanging up on someone who is likely trying to steal your money," concluded Sheriff Groves.

Southwest City man injured in collision on 43

A Southwest City man was injured in a two-vehicle collision 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on MO 43, three miles north of Tiff City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet PT Cruiser driven by Damon D. Johnson, 28, Southwest City, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled across the center of the roadway and into oncoming traffic, colliding with a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Jeffry D. Brumley, 55, Seneca.

Johnson was treated for moderate injuries at Integris Hospital, Grove, Oklahoma.

Joplin man injured in accident on 43

A Joplin man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 5 p.m. Tuesday on MO 43, one mile north of Southwest City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2017 Peterbilt Conventional driven by Eric L. Spence, 38, Joplin, traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

Spence was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Columbus Police investigating extensive vandalism at City Park

The Columbus Police Department is seeking the public's help.

Between the hours of 10:30 pm on Monday, July 28, and 6:00 am, Tuesday, July 29. the Columbus City Park was vandalized. 

The pavilion, old pool house, tennis courts, basketball courts, bathrooms, a grill, disc golf signage, and a bench were spray painted. 

The City of Columbus and the Columbus Police Department are asking for any citizen with information on who the responsible individual(s) are to please contact the Columbus Police Department at 620-429-1332 or 620-429-3992. 

The upgrading and improvement of the City Parks have been one of the main priorities by the City of Columbus and numerous other organizations and volunteers. We are asking that if you know or suspect who is responsible for this, please come forward so that we can put a stop to this destructive, unproductive behavior.

Crawford County Sheriff investigates report of severely neglected dog thrown from vehicle

On 07-16-2020 Investigators with the Crawford County Sheriff's Office responded to the SEK Humane Society in reference to a dog at that location that had been severely neglected and possibly thrown from a moving vehicle. 

Humane Society staff reported to the responding Investigators that a red healer breed dog appeared to have been thrown from a vehicle as the vehicle drove by the facility on 07-13-2020. 

They reported that the dog survived, but that it had several indicators of severe neglect. Humane Society staff reported that a possible vehicle of interest in the matter was a red-in-color Chrysler PT Cruiser.

After investigation into incident, Investigators found that the red-in-color vehicle was not a Chrysler PT Cruiser, but that it was a similar vehicle in body style to a PT Cruiser. 

Investigators located and interviewed the owners of the vehicle in question, and a similar vehicle that was in the area at the time the red healer was found. It was determined that the driver of the red-in-color vehicle that Humane Society staff saw drive by their facility was a passerby that had stopped to check on the red healer.

After speaking to several Humane Society staff members, Investigators determined that no one actually saw the dog being thrown from a vehicle. 

It was established, however, that the dog had indeed been severely neglected, and dumped in the area of the humane society. The red healer that has come to be known as "Sunshine" is currently be nursed back health thanks to the invaluable work of the staff at the Southeast Kansas Humane Society.

Cruelty to Animals is defined in Kansas State Statute 21-6412 as knowingly abandoning any animal in any place without making provisions for its proper care, or as having physical custody of any animal and knowingly failing to provide care as is needed for the health and wellbeing of such kind of animal. 

This incident remains under investigation as a suspect in the matter has not been identified. Anyone having information related to this crime, or other crimes, is urged to contact the Crawford County Sheriff's Office at 620-724-8274.

Video: Caught in the act- Can you identify these Pittsburg graffiti vandals?

Over the course of the past year, business and property owners in the City of Pittsburg have experienced damage to their property in the form of graffiti. 

These “tagging” incidents have consisted of the repeated use of words/symbols painted on property throughout the city, with downtown businesses being targeted most frequently. 

The City of Pittsburg responded last summer with the formation of a graffiti task force, consisting of employees from several departments throughout the city. Task force members worked to identify and document the tagging incidents, and several community partners aided the task force with a large scale clean-up effort last fall. 

This clean-up effort continues as tagging incidents continue to sporadically occur. Pittsburg Police have followed up on a number of leads to attempt to identify the suspects causing this damage; however, none of this information has been solid enough to lead to an arrest. 

A local business owner recently provided police with surveillance footage of two suspects tagging a utility box in a downtown alley with the letters “NOZ,” a tag that frequently appears throughout the downtown area.

The police are requesting your assistance in identifying the two subjects shown in this short video and accompanying still images.

Lamar man injured in collision in Golden City

A Lamar man was injured in a two-vehicle collision 4:45 a.m. today on MO 37 in Golden City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Dodge Durango driven by Jerry L. Rowell, 50, Lamar, backed into the path of a 2000 Buick Regal driven by Jason R. Stahl, 49, Lamar, and was struck by it.

Stahl was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

The Joplin arts and cultural community will convene virtually for Connect2Culture’s Fifth Annual Joplin Arts & Cultural Preview on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, 2:00pm via Zoom. This year, over 40 organizations have registered to present.

The Joplin Arts & Cultural Preview gives Joplin area arts and cultural organizations the chance to tell their story, share what they have planned for the year ahead (2020-2021), and why the public might be interested! 

Each organization will have up to two minutes to update the community. This event is part of C2C’s roundtable series and aims to educate the public about upcoming events and encourage collaboration between participating organizations, as well as inform the media about potential opportunities for an interesting story. Fayetteville man charged with felony DWI following fatal motorcycle crash in McDonald County

A Fayetteville, Arkansas man was charged with felony driving while intoxicated following a one-vehicle fatality accident 10:15 p.m. Monday on White Oak Road, 10 miles east of Jane.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2020 Kawasaki KXR1000 driven by Adam C. Parham, 32, Fayetteville, traveled off the right side of the road, struck a tree and overturned.

McDonald County Coroner Jonathan Fletcher pronounced a passenger, Bobby L. Coffman, 40, Bella Vista, Arkansas, dead at the scene at 11:38 p.m.

Parham, who refused to be tested for alcohol use, according to the report, was also cited for careless and imprudent driving. He was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

The fatality was the 64th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Traffic Impacts

Weather and/or scheduling conflicts could alter the work schedule.

This work is being done in advance of a project to build a new roundabout at the intersection of Elk Street/Fairlawn Ave./Garrison Ave. along with resurfacing of Missouri Route 571 between Fairview Ave. and I-49.

Route 160 bridges in over Stockton Lake in Dade County to close beginning next week

Two bridges on U.S. Route 160 over Stockton Lake near Greenfield will be CLOSE, one at a time, for rehabilitation beginning the week of August 3, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Both bridges are included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state.

The bridges are over the Turnback Creek arm and Lynn Branch arm of Stockton Lake approximately four miles east of Greenfield.

Contractor crews will replace the driving surface of each bridge, install new bridge walls and add new road signs as part of the project.

Traffic Impacts

Route 160 CLOSED over Turnback Creek arm for approximately 10 weeks beginning week of August 3
When Turnback Creek bridge is complete, Route 160 CLOSED over Lynn Branch arm for approximately seven weeks
Drivers will be directed to signed detour using Dade County Route O
Drivers will have access to driveways and field entrances at either end of the closed bridge but will not be able to travel through the work zones
Drivers are urged to find alternate routes around the work zone

Weather and/or unforeseen delays will alter the work schedule.

MODOT to begin pavement sealing work in Jasper, Newton, Barton, McDonald counties

State routes in five (5) southwest Missouri counties are scheduled to be sealed with a mixture of rock and oil beginning the week of August 3, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Here’s a look at the locations:

Barton County – U.S. Route 160 from the Missouri/Kansas state line east to I-49 (17.5 miles)
Jasper County – Route E from near Missouri Route 571 east to Missouri Route 37 (9 miles)
Jasper County – Route V from I-49 south to Missouri Route 96 (2 miles)
McDonald County – Missouri Route 43 from Route DD south to Route B (5 miles)
Barry County – Route F from Missouri Route 112 east to Missouri Route 86 (5 miles)
Barry County – Missouri Route 112 from Route F north to Missouri Route 86 (5.5 miles)
Newton/Barry counties – Missouri Route 86 from U.S. Route 60 near Neosho to Missouri Route 76 south of Wheaton (24.5 miles)

Drivers also can expect flaggers and pilot cars directing them through the work zone. Drivers should wait for the pilot vehicle before proceeding through the work zone or before entering the work zone from a side road.

Signs and message boards will alert drivers to the work zone.

Weather and/or scheduling delays will alter the work schedule.

A chip-seal is not an alternative to an asphalt overlay, but is planned for these roads as an economical way to maintain and preserve the roadway. The treatments keep a road from deteriorating and will extend its life.

Webb City teen arrested for DWI, assault on a law enforcement officer after ramming two Joplin police cars, resisting arrest

On July 27, 2020, a Joplin Police Officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop near 12th and Rangeline Road on a silver Ford Focus for several traffic violations. 

The driver’s behavior also showed clues of potential impairment. The vehicle failed to stop for the officer and a vehicle pursuit ensued that went east on Newman Road to Highway 249, then south to I-44. 

On I -44 the vehicle pulled over and officers began setting up for a high-risk traffic stop. The driver then put his vehicle into reverse and struck two J.P.D. patrol vehicles, disabling one of them. 

The driver then continued to flee, and other officers continued their pursuit. The vehicle pursuit came to an end and the driver was taken into custody when the suspect vehicle crashed into a utility pole near 7th and Pearl Avenue. 

During his arrest, the driver also assaulted another J. P.D. Officer. The driver was identified as Hunter R. Sease, age 18 of Webb City. 

Charges are being sought in Jasper County for Driving While Intoxicated, Resisting Arrest and Assault (special victim). Charges are also being south in Newton County for Assault in the 1st Degree (special victim), Property Damage and Resisting Arrest. The J.P.D. officers who had his vehicle disabled is a K9 Officer. Both the officer and K9 were not seriously injured.

Information sought on whereabouts of armed, dangerous former Neosho resident who skipped 2015 trial on forcible rape charge

Seven years ago today (Friday), Tomico Mims was arrested and charged by the Newton County Prosecutor's Office with forcible rape and felonious restraint. 

He failed to appear at trial in February of 2015 and warrants for his arrest have been pending since that time.
