Murphy Boulevard west of Main Street to be closed

(From the City of Joplin)

Murphy Boulevard will close starting Tuesday, Nov. 1, and run through Friday, November 4 as work begins on the installation of a new gate system near the low water bridge in the area. The closure will be just west of Main Street to near Bramar Drive, east of the bridge.

The City’s contractor, Joplin Industrial Electric, will work on the base foundations in preparation for the installation of the City’s new automated gates for the high-water event detection system at the low-water bridge of Joplin Creek.

Murphy Boulevard will open for traffic after Friday, Nov. 4. The contractor plans to complete the underground work for the project during this closure and anticipates returning later to complete installation of the system once all materials are received from the supplier. The supplier has indicated the gate arms and other materials have been delayed until mid to late November. The City will announce any future potential closures as the project’s work continues.

The automated gate with a high-water detection system is funded through the Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax that was recently renewed in 2021. The project includes:

a new detection system for high water events with capabilities of sending automated text and email notifications of the event to staff in Public Works, Police, and Fire Departments,

automated gate arms to close the road during these events,

new blinker sign warning poles on both the east and west sides of the bridge to alert motorists of any closures, and

a night vision capable camera onsite to provide City staff with real-time data on conditions at the site.

For questions, please contact Public Works at 417-624-0820, ext. 1598.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Office checks sex, violent offenders before Halloween

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

Law enforcement in Cherokee County recently conducted a county-wide offender compliance operation.

According to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves, there are 122 sex, drug and violent offenders required to register with the Sheriff's Office.

"It's important for us to keep the OffenderWatch Program up to date and accurate so parents can know of any offenders in their neighborhoods and have appropriate talks and safety plans with their children, especially before kids go out for Halloween."

Conducting these compliance checks allow law enforcement go to the offenders' homes and verify the information they provide our office when they register. Offenders found to be non-compliant face criminal charges for violating the Kansas Offender Registration Act.

"Over 93% of the registered offenders in our county were found to be in compliant and our office will be seeking criminal charges for those not in compliance."

"In order for parents to stay current on offenders within the area, I encourage going to our website, www.cherokeecountykssheriff.com and sign up for alerts under the Registered Offender Section. By doing so, an email notification can be sent any time a publicly registered offender moves into your neighborhood. In addition, parents can download the OffenderWatch app on their phone and the phones of their children, allowing the parent to see where their child is in relation to a registered offenders home," concluded Sheriff Groves.

Cherokee County Sheriff, Galena PD receive 500 pounds of prescription drugs in take back event

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Galena Police Department recently participated in the 23rd National Prescription Drug Take Back Event held on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

The National Drug Take Back allows law enforcement agencies across the nation to coordinate efforts to remove unneeded, unwanted or expired prescription drugs from communities for safe disposal. Over 4,000 agencies and departments participated in the most recent Drug Take Back Event.

"As prescription drug abuse, particularly opiod misuse, remain at epidemic levels in the United States, providing a convenient way for residents to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription medications before they unintentionally end up in the hands of kids or become stolen by someone who intends to abuse them, is incredibly important," stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

"In an effort to make safe disposal even more convenient for area residents, secure drop boxes are located in the lobby at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Galena Police Department and accessible at any time."

Later this week, nearly 500 pounds of prescription drugs, which were collected in Cherokee County will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for disposal.
