Joplin man arrested for DWI, multiple charges after slamming stolen van into two parked pickups and a house

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On 2-27-2018 at 8:07pm the Joplin Police Department responded to 1311 North Goetz Blvd for a vehicle crash involving a house.

Officers arrived and discovered that Dakota Parkhurst was Northbound on Goetz, driving a stolen 2010 Ford E-250 Van, displaying trailer license plate on the rear. He failed to negotiate a curve at Goetz and Willow Ln, left the west side of the roadway, then went back across the roadway and left the roadway on the east side. The stolen van then rolled and hit two parked pickup trucks in the driveway of 1311 North Goetz, before spinning around and impacting the south wall of that residence. The van caused extensive structural damage to the residence, including a partially collapsed wall to the garage.

Neighbors who heard the crash approached the van and attempted to assist the driver out of the van. The driver hit the driver’s window until it broke, crawled out of the driver’s window and ran on foot. The neighbors chased Parkhurst on foot approximately three yards to the north and held him down until responding officers took him into custody.

There were no injuries in this incident, only major property damage. The van was determined to have been reported stolen from Aurora, Missouri. The suspect, Dakota Parkhurst, 23, Joplin, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, Careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, expired Missouri Driver’s License, tampering with a stolen vehicle and possession of a controlled substance-meth. Charges have been submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration.

(The following message and photo were shared on Facebook today concerning a vehicle stolen in Joplin.)

So this morning at 5:30 a.m. just off of South Main, my son's car was stolen right out of the driveway as they were warming it up to go to work.

(The thieves)  busted the porch light out so no one could see them and also busted a window out in their shop beside the house.

If anyone sees this please call the Joplin Police or 417-461-4396 Blue Trailblazer 2002 Mint condition. He just bought it about a month ago! PLEASE SHARE !!

Joplin to participate in Statewide Tornado Drill

(From the City of Joplin)

Severe Weather Awareness Week will be recognized from March 4 to 10 to help Missourians learn more about potential severe weather and how to prepare for possible weather conditions in upcoming comings.

The National Weather Service, State Emergency Management Agency and Keith Stammer, Joplin and Jasper County’s Emergency Manager, urge Joplin citizens and all Missourians to use this week’s resources to learn about severe weather and how to protect themselves in various scenarios.

An important practice during this week is participating in Missouri’s annual Statewide Tornado Drill set for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6. At that time, Joplin’s outdoor warning sirens will sound, signaling the beginning of the statewide tornado drill and indicating that Missourians should practice taking shelter. If a tornado shelter is not available, the safest shelter location is a windowless basement or an interior room in the lowest level of a building. Put as many walls between you and the tornado. Other safe locations for businesses and schools include interior stairways and tornado safe rooms.

If severe weather is in the forecast for March 6, the tornado drill will be moved to 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 8.

This tornado drill will be observed by the City of Joplin by sounding the warning sirens for a full three minutes, the same amount that would occur in an actual warning.

The National Weather Service provides safety tips and educational information about tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, lightning and the importance of NOAA Weather Radios on its Severe Weather Awareness Week page: http://www.weather.gov/lsx/severeweek.

Each day during the week focuses on a different safety message:

Monday, March 5 - Preparedness Day;

Tuesday, March 6 - Tornado Safety Day;

Wednesday, March 7 - Flash Flood Safety Day;

Thursday, March 8 - Severe Thunderstorm Day; and

Friday, March 9, Communication/NOAA Weather Radio Day.

In addition to the City’s procedures during the drill, the National Weather Service and the State Emergency Management Agency will be conducting their tests using various news mediums and alert systems. The NWS will kick off the drill with a Tornado Warning which is plainly marked as a test. This test will cause NOAA Weather Radios to activate.

As this drill kicks off the 2018 Severe Weather Awareness Week, observed from March 4 - 10, Keith Stammer, Emergency Management Director, encourages everyone to be proactive and prepare for weather safety. Preparing today may make the difference in surviving the storms to come this spring. He also encourages people to seek appropriate notification system and reminds the public about the warning sirens’ purpose.

“The sirens provide a warning for anyone who is out of doors to go indoors, if possible, and take shelter,” he said. “People indoors cannot always expect to hear the outdoor warning sirens.”

Stammer encourages residents to utilize a NOAA Weather Radio that provides a warning signal when the area is under a watch or a warning. “The advantage of having a weather radio is that you hear the alerts directly from the National Weather Service, and are kept current of the warning status.” Weather radios are available at local retailers and are priced at approximately $30.

For information on Joplin’s siren activation policy, please visit http://www.joplinmo.org/index.aspx?nid=589.

For additional severe weather preparedness, the National Weather Service Springfield’s office has published their spring edition of "The Ozark Ambassador" newsletter. The Ozark Ambassador newsletter can be found at http://www.weather.gov/media/sgf/wrn/Spring2018_Newsletter.pdf

MSSU's mock trial team ends season with Outstanding Witness awards

(From Southern News Service)

It wasn’t just knowing the case forward and back. It was also about developing a character that was credible on the witness stand.

“I worked on position and stature, how I was going to speak with people and look at the judges,” says Chrystalynn Sanchez, who won the Outstanding Witness Award during the 2018 Regional Mock Trial Tournament, held Feb. 17-18 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. “I even got a pin like an airline pilot would wear.”

The case members of Missouri Southern State University’s Mock Trial team prepared for during the 2017-18 season involved attempted murder, with a drug angle to it. Witnesses included the victim’s daughter, a pharmacologist, an Uber driver and others. Team members must be ready to serve as both the prosecution and defense during tournaments.

In competition, it’s the details that matter when taking the witness stand, says the Missouri Southern sophomore from Carthage – who took the stand as the attempted murder victim.

“We’re learning practical courtroom decorum as well as many of the things we’ll need to know if we continue on to law school.”

Sanchez, a sophomore working on a double major in Spanish and political science, says she plans to study immigration law after graduation.

While Missouri Southern’s team did not advance onward from the regional tournament, the season was very successful according to Dr. Nicholas Nicoletti, the team’s head coach. What was especially remarkable about their success was the number of first-year participants on the team, including Sanchez.

“For such a very new team, they won an award at every tournament,” he says. “They beat some of the best teams in Missouri at regionals. If we have the same people come back next year, the team has a bright future.”

Sarah Schultz, a sophomore business management major from Baxter Springs, Kan., received an Outstanding Witness Award during the Mid-Missouri Mock Trial Tournament held in January at the University of Missouri.

Jaycee Lee, a senior criminal justice administration major from Aurora, Mo., was also recognized as an Outstanding Witness during the Sooner Invitational at the University of Oklahoma in November 2017.

“Next up is our Mock Trial boot camp in August,” says Nicoletti. “We’ll get the new case and spend a whole weekend learning the ins and outs of it.”

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight

Friday night, officers headed to a house to look for a wanted male.

As they arrived, they saw a car leaving the house and it failed to dim its bright lights as it passed officers. Officers caught up to the car as it pulled into W. 7th St. Walmart. They attempted a car stop but the driver failed to stop.

Instead, he threw two bags of meth out of the vehicle window and continued driving through Walmart parking lot at approximately 10 mph. He eventually came to a stop on the west side of Walmart parking lot.

The driver refused to exit the vehicle or follow commands.

Eventually, the passenger side window was broken out by officers, allowing the doors to be unlocked, and the driver was pulled from vehicle. He actively resisted arrest, fighting with officers. He was arrested on 12 active warrants, felony drug charges, resisting arrest, driving while suspended and failure to yield to emergency vehicle. The whole incident occurred during the steady cold rain.

More than 140 entries have been received for this year’s event from students in area high-schools, junior highs and middle schools. Those entries include papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries and websites.

Students in grades six through eight will compete in the Junior Division; grades nine through 12 in the Senior Division. Judges will include Missouri Southern faculty as well as community volunteers with a special interest in history.

Participating schools include Carthage High School, Carthage Junior High, College Heights Christian School, Joplin East Middle School, Joplin North Middle School, Joplin South Middle School, Joplin High School, Lamar High School, Neosho Christian School, Neosho Junior High, Nevada Middle, Seneca Iva E. Best selling author, illustrator, Joplin native to have readings at Joplin Public Library

(From Connect2Culture)

Joplin native Loren Long, bestselling author and illustrator, will return to Joplin on Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9, 2018, spending much of his time at Joplin Public Library (1901 E 20th St, Joplin, MO 64804).

His activities include readings from his books, sharing about this journey as a professional author and illustrator with area high school students, as well as an educational luncheon for the arts community.

Loren is the author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling picture books Otis, Otis and the Tornado, Otis and the Puppy, An Otis Christmas, Otis and the Kittens, and Otis and the Scarecrow

Loren’s heartwarming Little Tree is a picture book for all ages.

Loren Long is the #1 New York Times bestselling illustrator of President Barack Obama’s picture book Of Thee I Sing, the re-illustrated edition of Watty Piper’s The Little Engine That Could, and Madonna’s Mr. Peabody’s Apples. He is also the Golden Kite Award winning illustrator of Angela Johnson’s I Dream of Trains and the Golden Kite Honor winning illustrator of When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer, based on the poem by Walt Whitman.

Loren is also the illustrator of Margaret Wise Brown’s never-before-published picture book Good Day, Good Night, and Newbery Medal winning Matt de La Pena’s Love.

“Not only are we welcoming one of Joplin’s own back home, we are recognizing the success one of our own has achieved,” said Patrick Tuttle, Director, Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Loren was born here and has achieved renowned success as an illustrator. We can only hope that someday soon his artistic talent will have a permanent presence in Joplin.”

Long’s visit to Joplin is a collaborative effort between the Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau, Joplin Public Library, Post Art Library, Connect2Culture, and Spiva Center for the Arts. Long’s visit is sponsored, in part, by a gracious donation from the Bramlage and Willcoxon Foundation.

“We're very fortunate to have the opportunity for Loren Long to visit the Library and speak with area children about his books and art,” said Jacque Gage, Library Director, Joplin Public Library. “It's not often we have a chance to bring an author/illustrator of this magnitude to Joplin. I'm excited that the Library is part of the group that made this visit possible."

Missouri Southern students advance in national trumpet competition

(From Southern News Service)

Two students from Missouri Southern State University’s Music Department have advanced to the semifinal round of the National Trumpet Competition, to be held March 8-10 at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.

Oliver Smith, a junior music performance major from Carthage, and Seth Marshall, a sophomore instrumental education from Ankeny, Iowa, were selected for the competition after each submitted performance videos. The top three finalists will advance to the finals during the competition.

“The sheer drive these students have is amazing,” said Freddie Green, assistant professor of music. “They both said, ‘I’m going to the National Trumpet Competition.’ There was no question. Some students said they wanted to go, these two said, ‘I’m going.’”

Smith said he practices two or three hours day – a minimum two hours a day total – in preparation for the competition.

“I didn’t make it last year, but I did this year,” he said. But he has his sights set beyond the semifinal round. “I hope we can make the finals.”

Green said the students’ work ethic is what has brought them this far.

“This is a great reflection on the students here at Missouri Southern,” he said.

Joplin Police arrest man at 117 S.McKinley, meth confiscated

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight

Yesterday evening at 7:38 p.m. officers attempted to contact a male at a residence at 117 South McKinley, across from Jefferson Elementary School, for a felony warrant from Stone County, Missouri for Hindering Prosecution.

The male pulled his truck into the garage, ignored officers’ commands, went inside and slammed the garage door on officers in pursuit.

The house was surrounded and commands were given from a loudspeaker for the male to exit, but he refused. Officers forced entry into the front door, and cleared the residence without locating the male. While doing so, they could hear him moving around in the attic. After more commands were given, the male exited the attic and was arrested.

While looking for him, officers saw a bag of meth sitting on a shelf in plain view, along with a smoking pipe and a digital scale. The bag of meth weighed approximately 26.5 grams. The male was arrested for the felony warrant, drug paraphernalia, felony resisting and felony drug charges.
