Nancy Hughes devotion: Someone is Watching

Key Scripture:

“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”
Titus 2:7 (NIV)

Devotion:

The student nurse stuck out her hand and introduced herself. “Hi. I’m Sarah Stephens. I have been assigned to follow you around today. And I’ve got to be honest with you. I’m really nervous!”

I shook her hand. “Don’t be nervous,” I smiled back confidently. “It’s going to be a great day!” But inside my mind was yelling “YOU are nervous? What if I mess up in front of you? What if I give the wrong med? What if I can’t answer your questions? The nervous one here is actually ME!”

As the health services director for our school district, I had the privilege of being a preceptor for nursing students and showing them the duties of a school nurse. But Sarah Stephens was my very first student nurse to come to me for the training.

As she followed me around all day and watched over my shoulder, I found myself being more careful when listening to lungs or looking in ears. And I double-checked the medications I gave more than once, to make extra sure I was correct in each dosage.

Just as I was about to comment negatively about a student I saw multiple times a day with nothing physically wrong, I glanced to see Sarah, listening intently for what I was about to say. And my comment was left unspoken.

All because Sarah was by my side, watching me all day.

Oh how I am convicted by today’s Key Scripture in Titus 2:7. It makes me think, what if. What if Jesus followed me around all day? Would my actions or comments be different?

Would I turn off music I normally listen to? Would what I watch on television or at the movies change? And then there’s language: would I still have the same conversations that I usually have if Jesus was listening intently over my shoulder?

How would I speak to my spouse? My children? The slow cashier in the check out line at the supermarket?

But wait. Jesus DOES follow you and me around every day! The Holy Spirit lives in us and is with us day in and day out. And He hears what we say and He sees what we do.

Some One is watching. May He be pleased by the example of our lives to others.

My Prayer for Today:

Father, forgive me for only trying to be like you when someone is watching me. Guide me as I choose to reflect your character every single day. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection:

Have you ever acted differently because someone was watching what you said and did?

Application:

Every morning for one week, ask the Lord to speak to your heart every time you say or do something completely opposite of Titus 2:7.

Throughout the day, place His presence beside you no matter where you are or what you are doing. Confess anything that is not an example of Jesus.

Power Verses:

Titus 2:7 (NIV) “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”

John 13:15 (NIV) “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

Philippians 4:9 (NIV) “Whatever you have learned or received or heart from me, or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

Southern Theatre to present "The Threepenny Opera"

(From Southern News Service)

Southern Theatre will present “The Threepenny Opera” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, through Saturday, March 5, in the Bud Walton Theatre on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.
John Gay’s 18th-century “The Beggar’s Opera” was adapted into English by Marc Blitzstein with music by Kurt Weill, fashioning a savage, biting commentary on bourgeois capitalism and modern morality. Set in Victorian London, the bitter tale is told of the predatory outlaw known as Mack the Knife. He secretly marries the daughter of Soho's underworld boss, but is soon betrayed by his sinister in-laws and sent to prison. After being freed by the police chief's daughter, he is again betrayed- this time by a prostitute-and sentenced to death. At the final hour he manages a reprieve from Queen Victoria herself, thus providing a menacing finale of ferocious irony.
The Southern Theatre production is co-directed by Ann and Jim Lile.
Admission is $4 for MSSU students and $5 for faculty and staff; $10 for adults; $8 for senior citizens; and $6 for non-MSSU students. This production is for mature audiences only, due to explicit language and adult situations.
Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For reservations, call 417-625-3190 or purchase tickets online at www.mssu.edu/ticket-office.
For requests for accommodations related to a disability, contact Terri Spencer at 417- 625-9393 at least 72 hours before the performance.

Mock trial season concludes for Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

The Mock Trial season concluded for Missouri Southern State University after a close loss over the weekend at the Kansas City Regional Tournament blocked their advance to the national competition.

The event included 260 competitors from 25 different teams. A total of 24 awards were given for outstanding attorneys and outstanding witnesses, and competitors from Missouri Southern brought home three of those awards.

Sarah Scott, junior criminal justice major from Galena, Kan., and Manuela Vergara, junior international studies major from Joplin, were each recognized as outstanding witnesses. Josh Turner, senior general studies major from Carthage, received an award for outstanding attorney.

In addition, Missouri Southern’s Team 1069 tied with a team from the Air Force Academy for the “Spirit of ATMA” award and brought home an honorable mention after a tiebreaker. The award, presented by the American Mock Trial Association, recognizes the teams that best exemplify the ideals of civility, justice and fair play.

MSSU Board receives update on medical school curriculum, admission standards

(From Southern News Service)

The Board of Governors at Missouri Southern State University received an update on the finalization of curriculum and admissions standards for the Yours to Lose – Advanced Medical School Acceptance program on Friday, Feb. 19, during a meeting at Missouri Southern.
In December, Missouri Southern formalized a partnership that will allow up to 25 students to be admitted into the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences at the same time as their acceptance to MSSU.
“While there are 25 guaranteed spots for KCU, there will be a total of 48 students accepted into each cohort at Missouri Southern,” said Dr. Paula Carson, provost/vice president for academic affairs. “The alternates will still be able to take full advantage of the special programs and enriching experiences and opportunities.”
This fall, Missouri Southern will begin identifying “transitional” students who will be eligible and ready to join the KCU program when the Joplin campus opens in 2017. The first cohort to go through the full, three-year Yours to Lose program will be admitted for the Fall 2017 semester.
A number of classes – from general education courses to those specific to the pre-med program – will be tailored toward developing the skills needed for medical school. They will range from adapting to rigorous curriculum and non-traditional scheduling to the communication needed for a good bedside manner, said Carson.
Each year, members of the cohort will be selected from around the region. Missouri Southern has already identified more than a dozen high schools in the Four State Area to serve as Yours to Lose partners, said Carson.
In other business, the board authorized the administration to set the out-of-state tuition rate at $357.22, a $3.16 increase per credit hour, for Fiscal Year 2017. Textbook rental fees will increase by $2 to $14 per credit hour.
The board also approved a proposal to keep tuition levels the same for the 2016-17 academic year, provided that Gov. Jay Nixon’s recommended 6 percent appropriation increase is authorized.
Should the appropriation increase not meet or exceed that recommendation, the board reserves the right to authorize the administration to set in-state and Lion Pride tuition rates at $178.61 – an increase of $1.58 per credit hour.

Surveyors begin work on street improvements for recovery area

(From the City of Joplin)

As repair and recovery continues following the May 2011 tornado, design of the public infrastructure projects will result in numerous surveyors working throughout the impacted area for a period of time. Citizens should be watchful to these workers, and use caution while passing them.

Survey work will begin on Monday, February 22 and continue in areas impacted by the tornado. Surveyors will be clearly marked in safety vests with vehicles with their companies’ logos. Survey work will mainly be on City right-of-way (ROW) adjacent to privately owned properties.
Following the survey work, residents will notice various flags and stakes in the ROW indicating utilities and various service lines to help consultants design the street surface improvements around these elements.

Due to the extensive geographic area, the project was separated into specific areas and different consultants were awarded the bid for these specifically assigned areas. One group, the Joint Engineering Team (JET), is comprised of four consultants including CJW, Olsson Associates, Tri-State Engineering, and TranSystems. Locations for the JET Projects are:

• Surface Improvements (22nd to 26th St. and Maiden Lane to Jackson)

• Surface Improvements (26th to 32nd St and Maiden Lane to Main)

• Surface Improvements (15th to 20th St. and Jackson to Main)

• Surface Improvements (20th to 26th St. and Jackson to Main)

To contact JET about these areas, citizens should call 417-206-9000.

Anderson Engineering is working on these projects:

• Surface Improvements (15th to 20th St. and Florida to Range Line)

• Surface Improvements (20th to 24th St. and Florida to Range Line)

To contact Anderson Engineering about these areas, citizens should call 417-782-7399.

Upon completion of the designs for these areas, the City will let bids on the work in upcoming months.

The project is funded through the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Program (CDBG-DR-2) grant program of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
